    NS5-branes on an ellipsis and novel marginal deformations with parafermions

    We consider NS5-branes distributed along the circumference of an ellipsis and explicitly construct the corresponding gravitational background. This provides a continuous line of deformations between the limiting cases, considered before, in which the ellipsis degenerates into a circle or into a bar. We show that a slight deformation of the background corresponding to a circle distribution into an ellipsoidal one is described by a novel non-factorizable marginal perturbation of bilinears of dressed parafermions. The latter are naturally defined for the circle case since, as it was shown in the past, the background corresponds to an orbifold of the exact conformal field theory coset model SU(2)/U(1) times SL(2,R)/U(1). We explore the possibility to define parafermionic objects at generic points of the ellipsoidal families of backgrounds away from the circle point. We also discuss a new limiting case in which the ellipsis degenerates into two infinitely stretched parallel bars and show that the background is related to the Eguchi-Hanson metric, via T-duality.Comment: 24 page

    Fibre-optic metadevice for all-optical signal modulation based on coherent absorption

    Recently, coherent control of the optical response of thin films of matter in standing waves has attracted considerable attention, ranging from applications in excitation-selective spectroscopy and nonlinear optics to demonstrations of all-optical image processing. Here we show that integration of metamaterial and optical fibre technologies allows the use of coherently controlled absorption in a fully fiberized and packaged switching metadevice. With this metadevice, that controls light with light in a nanoscale plasmonic metamaterial film on an optical fibre tip, we provide proof-of-principle demonstrations of logical functions XOR, NOT and AND that are performed within a coherent fully fiberized network at wavelengths between 1530 nm and 1565 nm. The metadevice performance has been tested with optical signals equivalent to a bitrate of up to 40 Gbit/s and sub-milliwatt power levels. Since coherent absorption can operate at the single photon level and also with 100 THz bandwidth, we argue that the demonstrated all-optical switch concept has potential applications in coherent and quantum information networks.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Development and analysis of high-order vorticity confinement schemes

    High-order extensions of the Vorticity Confinement (VC) method are developed for the accurate com- putation of vortical flows, following the VC2 conservative formulation of Steinhoff. First, a high-order formulation of VC is presented for the case of the linear transport equation for decoupled schemes in space and time. A spectral analysis shows that the new nonlinear schemes have improved dispersive and dissipative properties compared to their linear counterparts at all orders of accuracy. For the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations, the original VC method is extended to 3 rd - and 5 th -order of accuracy, with the goal of developing a VC formulation that maintains the vorticity preserving capability of the original 1 st -order method and is suitable for application to high-order numerical simulations. The high-order ex- tensions remain both independent of the choice of baseline numerical scheme and rotationally invariant since they are based on the Laplace operator. Numerical tests validate the increased order of accuracy, vorticity-preserving capability and compatibility of the VC extensions with high-order methods

    A new 3rd-order Vorticity Confinement scheme is presented as an extension of the original VC2 scheme developed by Steinhofffor the resolution of the fluid dynamic equations. The theoretical developments are explained, and the method is tested. The results obtained show that the new scheme combines the accuracy of the underlying higher order scheme and the confinement capability of the original VC2 method

    Mixmaster universe in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

    We consider spatially homogeneous (but generally non-isotropic) cosmologies in the recently proposed Horava-Lifshitz gravity and compare them to those of general relativity using Hamiltonian methods. In all cases, the problem is described by an effective point particle moving in a potential well with exponentially steep walls. Focusing on the closed-space cosmological model (Bianchi type IX), the mixmaster dynamics is now completely dominated by the quadratic Cotton tensor potential term for very small volume of the universe. Unlike general relativity, where the evolution towards the initial singularity always exhibits chaotic behavior with alternating Kasner epochs, the anisotropic universe in Horava-Lifshitz gravity (with parameter lambda > 1/3) is described by a particle moving in a frozen potential well with fixed (but arbitrary) energy E. Alternating Kasner epochs still provide a good description of the early universe for very large E, but the evolution appears to be non-ergodic. For very small E there are harmonic oscillations around the fully isotropic model. The question of chaos remains open for intermediate energy levels.Comment: 1+35 pages, 4 figure

    The BRST quantization and the no-ghost theorem for AdS_3

    In our previous papers, we prove the no-ghost theorem without light-cone directions (hep-th/0005002, hep-th/0303051). We point out that our results are valid for more general backgrounds. In particular, we prove the no-ghost theorem for AdS_3 in the context of the BRST quantization (with the standard restriction on the spin). We compare our BRST proof with the OCQ proof and establish the BRST-OCQ equivalence for AdS_3. The key in both approaches lies in the certain structure of the matter Hilbert space as a product of two Verma modules.
