A comparative study of mental health of medical students in two countries
Results from many studies indicate that throughout medical education students experience high levels of stress and depression. The aim of the current study was to assess and compare Bulgarian and Turkish medical students' levels of stress and depression. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 546 students (276 foreign students from Medical University – Sofia and 270 medical students from several medical universities in Ankara). The study instrument included basic socio-demographic questions, Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ-40 items) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Turkish medical students showed higher levels of stress and depression than foreign students from Bulgaria. We found that all types of stressors in medical students had a relationship with depression. Results of our study imply that medical students need access to psychological support throughout their education
Layer Features of the Lattice Gas Model for Self-Organized Criticality
A layer-by-layer description of the asymmetric lattice gas model for
1/f-noise suggested by Jensen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 3103 (1990)] is presented.
The power spectra of the lattice layers in the direction perpendicular to the
particle flux is studied in order to understand how the white noise at the
input boundary evolves, on the average, into 1/f-noise for the system. The
effects of high boundary drive and uniform driving force on the power spectrum
of the total number of diffusing particles are considered. In the case of
nearest-neighbor particle interactions, high statistics simulation results show
that the power spectra of single lattice layers are characterized by different
exponents such that as one approaches the outer

Tenascin-R mediates activity-dependent recruitment of neuroblasts in the adult mouse forebrain.
International audienceNeuroblasts arising in the adult forebrain that travel to the olfactory bulb use two modes of migration: tangentially, along the rostral migratory stream, and radially, in the core of the olfactory bulb where they start to ascend to the outer layers. Although the mechanisms of tangential migration have been extensively studied, the factors controlling radial migration remain unexplored. Here we report that the extracellular matrix glycoprotein tenascin-R, expressed in the adult mouse olfactory bulb, initiates both the detachment of neuroblasts from chains and their radial migration. Expression of tenascin-R is activity dependent, as it is markedly reduced by odor deprivation. Furthermore, grafting of tenascin-R-transfected cells into non-neurogenic regions reroutes migrating neuroblasts toward these regions. The identification of an extracellular microenvironment capable of directing migrating neuroblasts provides insights into the mechanisms regulating radial migration in the adult olfactory bulb and offers promising therapeutic venues for brain repair
