Atomic quantum superposition state generation via optical probing
We analyze the performance of a protocol to prepare an atomic ensemble in a
superposition of two macroscopically distinguishable states. The protocol
relies on conditional measurements performed on a light field, which interacts
with the atoms inside an optical cavity prior to detection, and we investigate
cavity enhanced probing with continuous beams of both coherent and squeezed
light. The stochastic master equations used in the analysis are expressed in
terms of the Hamiltonian of the probed system and the interaction between the
probed system and the probe field and are thus quite generally applicable.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Reduction in DNA binding activity of the transcription factor Pax-5a in B lymphocytes of aged mice
Aging has been associated with intrinsic changes of the humoral immune response, which may lead to an increased occurrence of autoimmune disorders and pathogenic susceptibility. The transcription factor Pax-5 is a key regulator of B cell development. Pax-5a/B cell-specific activator protein and an alternatively spliced isoform, Pax-Sd, may have opposing functions in transcriptional regulation due to the lack of a transactivation domain in Pax-Sd. To study B cell-specific changes that occur during the aging process, we investigated expression patterns of Pax-Sa and Sd in mature B cells of young and aged mice. RNase protection assays showed a similar transcriptional pattern for both age groups that indicates that aging has no affect on transcription initiation or alternative splicing for either isoform, In contrast, a significant reduction in the DNA binding activity of Pax-Sa but not Pax-Sd protein was observed in aged B cells in vitro, while Western blot analyses showed that similar levels of Pax-Sa and Sd proteins were present in both age groups. The observed decrease in Pax-Sa binding activity correlated with changes in expression of two Pax-5 target genes in aged B cells, Expression of the Ig J chain and the secreted form of Ig mu, which are both known to be suppressed by Pax-Sa in mature B cells, were increased in B cells of aged mice, Together, our studies suggest that changes associated with the aging phenotype cause posttranslational modification(s) of Pax-Sa but not Pax-Sd, which may lead to an abnormal B cell phenotype in aged mice, associated with elevated levels of J chain, and secretion of IgM
Infinite qubit rings with maximal nearest neighbor entanglement: the Bethe ansatz solution
We search for translationally invariant states of qubits on a ring that
maximize the nearest neighbor entanglement. This problem was initially studied
by O'Connor and Wootters [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 052302 (2001)]. We first map
the problem to the search for the ground state of a spin 1/2 Heisenberg XXZ
model. Using the exact Bethe ansatz solution in the limit of an infinite ring,
we prove the correctness of the assumption of O'Connor and Wootters that the
state of maximal entanglement does not have any pair of neighboring spins
``down'' (or, alternatively spins ``up''). For sufficiently small fixed
magnetization, however, the assumption does not hold: we identify the region of
magnetizations for which the states that maximize the nearest neighbor

The production is studied as a function of sodium line density, beam energy and background helium gas density. The characteristics of this high current He{sup -} source are analyzed to determine the design requirements for He{sup -} beam generation in the range of tens to hundred of milliamperes
Short Bowel Patients Treated for Two Years with Glucagon-Like Peptide 2 (GLP-2): Compliance, Safety, and Effects on Quality of Life
Background and aims. Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) has been shown to improve intestinal absorption in short bowel syndrome (SBS) patients in a short-term study. This study describes safety, compliance, and changes in quality of life in 11 SBS patients at baseline, week 13, 26, and 52 during two years of subcutaneous GLP-2 treatment, 400 microgram TID, intermitted by an 8-week washout period.
Methods. Safety and compliance was evaluated during the admissions. The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP), Short Form 36 (SF 36), and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ) evaluated quality of life.
Results. The predominant adverse event was transient abdominal discomfort in 5 of 11 patients, but in 2, both suffering from Crohns disease, it progressed to abdominal pain and led to discontinuation of GLP-2 treatment. One had a fibrostenotic lesion electively resected at the jejuno-ascendo-anastomosis. The investigator excluded a patient due to unreliable feedback. Stoma nipple enlargement was seen in all 9 jejunostomy patients. Reported GLP-2 compliance was excellent (>93%). GLP-2 improved the overall quality of life VAS-score (4.1 ± 2.8 cm versus 6.0 ± 2.4 cm, P < .01), the overall SIP score (10.3 ± 8.9% versus 6.2 ± 9.5%, P < .001), the mental component of the SF-36 (45 ± 13% versus 53 ± 11%, P < .05), and the overall IBDQ score (5.1 ± 0.9 versus 5.4 ± 0.9, P < .007) in the 8 patients completing the study.
Conclusions. Long-term treatment with GLP-2 is feasible in SBS patients, although caution must be exercised in patients with a history of abdominal pain. Although conclusions cannot be made in a noncontrolled trial, the high reported compliance might reflect a high treatment satisfaction, where the clinical benefits of GLP-2 may outweigh the discomforts of injections
Short Bowel Patients Treated for Two Years with Glucagon-Like Peptide 2: Effects on Intestinal Morphology and Absorption, Renal Function, Bone and Body Composition, and Muscle Function
Background and aims. In a short-term study, Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) has been shown to improve intestinal absorption in short bowel syndrome (SBS) patients. This study describes longitudinal changes in relation to GLP-2 treatment for two years.
Methods. GLP-2, 400 micrograms, s.c.,TID, were offered, to eleven SBS patients keeping parenteral support constant. 72-hour nutritional balance studies were performed at baseline, weeks 13, 26, 52 during two years intermitted by an 8-week washout period. In addition, mucosal morphometrics, renal function (by creatinine clearance), body composition and bone mineral density (by DEXA), biochemical markers of bone turnover (by s-CTX and osteocalcin, PTH and vitamin D), and muscle function (NMR, lungfunction, exercise test) were measured. Results. GLP-2 compliance was >93%. Three of eleven patients did not complete the study. In the remaining 8 patients, GLP-2 significantly reduced the fecal wet weight from approximately 3.0 to approximately 2.0 kg/day. This was accompanied by a decline in the oral wet weight intake, maintaining intestinal wet weight absorption and urinary weight constant. Renal function improved. No significant changes were demonstrated in energy intake or absorption, and GLP-2 did not significantly affect mucosal morphology, body composition, bone mineral density or muscle function. Conclusions. GLP-2 treatment reduces fecal weight by approximately 1000 g/d and enables SBS patients to maintain their intestinal fluid and electrolyte absorption at lower oral intakes. This was accompanied by a 28% improvement in creatinine clearance
Influence of oxygen ordering kinetics on Raman and optical response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4}
Kinetics of the optical and Raman response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4} were studied
during room temperature annealing following heat treatment. The superconducting
T_c, dc resistivity, and low-energy optical conductivity recover slowly,
implying a long relaxation time for the carrier density. Short relaxation times
are observed for the B_{1g} Raman scattering -- magnetic, continuum, and phonon
-- and the charge transfer band. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that these two
relaxation rates are related to two length scales corresponding to local oxygen

Potential loss of nutrients from different rearing strategies for fattening pigs on pasture
Nutrient load and distribution on pasture were investigated with fattening pigs that: 1) spend a proportion of or their entire life on pasture, 2) were fed either restrictively or ad libitum, and 3) were weaned at different times of the year. The N and P retention in pigs decreased the longer they were kept on pasture. The contents of soil inorganic N and exchangeable K were significantly raised compared to the soil outside the enclosures but with no differences between treatments. Pig grazing did not affect extractable soil P. Regular moving of huts, feeding and water troughs was effective in ensuring that nutrients were more evenly distributed on the paddocks. Grass cover, as determined by spectral reflectance, was not related to the experimental treatments but only to time of year. During spring and summer, grass was present in parts of the paddocks, whereas during autumn and winter the pigs kept grass cover below 10%. Fattening pigs on pasture carries a high risk of nutrient loss and it is concluded that the most environmentally acceptable way of keeping fattening pigs on pasture involves a combination of reduced dietary N intake, reduced stocking rate and seasonal rather than all year production
Nonlinear Coherent Modes of Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates
Nonlinear coherent modes are the collective states of trapped Bose atoms,
corresponding to different energy levels. These modes can be created starting
from the ground state condensate that can be excited by means of a resonant
alternating field. A thorough theory for the resonant excitation of the
coherent modes is presented. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the
feasibility of this process are found. Temporal behaviour of fractional
populations and of relative phases exhibits dynamic critical phenomena on a
critical line of the parametric manifold. The origin of these critical
phenomena is elucidated by analyzing the structure of the phase space. An
atomic cloud, containing the coherent modes, possesses several interesting
features, such as interference patterns, interference current, spin squeezing,
and massive entanglement. The developed theory suggests a generalization of
resonant effects in optics to nonlinear systems of Bose-condensed atoms.Comment: 26 pages, Revtex, no figure
