The deuteron NMR Hahn echo decay in polyethylene oxide melts
The deuteron transverse relaxation properties of polyethylene oxide melts of four different molecular weights, covering the range from the onset of entanglements to the regime of fully entangled chains, are investigated using Hahn echo decays over an extensive time interval up to ten times the effective transverse spin relaxation time. The results are compared to predictions based on the Rouse and reptation formalisms, taking into account the dynamical heterogeneity of linear polymer chains produced by the end segments. The experimental results can be described qualitatively by a combination of both models, with the contribution of reptation dynamics increasing with growing chain length. The transition is continuous, rather than being characterized by sharp regime boundaries. Up to a molecular weight of 300.000 g/mol, the predicted limit of pure reptation dynamics is not yet reached. Quantitative deviations from the predicted decays as computed by numerical procedures become observable toward the long-time limit of the Hahn echo decays and are being discussed in terms of shortcomings of the available reptation theories
Molecular gas in NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA). XI. A complete gravity torque map of NGC4579: new clues on bar evolution
We create a complete gravity torque map of the disk of the LINER/Seyfert 1.9
galaxy NGC4579. We quantify the efficiency of angular momentum transport and
search for signatures of secular evolution in the fueling process from r~15kpc
down to the inner r~50pc around the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We use both
the 1-0 and 2-1 line maps of CO obtained with the Plateau de Bure
Interferometer (PdBI) as part of the NUclei of Galaxies-(NUGA)-project. We
derive the stellar potential from a NIR (K band) wide field image of the
galaxy. The K-band image, which reveals a stellar bar, together with a high
resolution HI map of NGC4579 obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA), allow us
to extend the gravity torque analysis to the outer disk. The bulk of the gas
response traced by the CO PdBI maps follows the expected gas flow pattern
induced by the bar potential in the presence of two Inner Lindblad Resonances
(ILR). We also detect an oval distortion in the inner r~200pc of the K-band
image. The oval is not aligned with the large-scale bar, a signature of
dynamical decoupling. The morphology of the outer disk suggests that the
neutral gas is currently piling up in a pseudo-ring formed by two winding
spiral arms that are morphologically decoupled from the bar structure. In the
outer disk, the decoupling of the spiral allows the gas to efficiently produce
net gas inflow on intermediate scales. The corotation barrier seems to be
overcome due to secular evolution processes. The gas in the inner disk is
efficiently funneled by gravity torques down to r~300pc. Closer to the AGN, the
two m=2 modes (bar and oval) act in concert to produce net gas inflow down to
r~50pc, providing a clear smoking gun evidence of fueling with associated short
dynamical time-scales.Comment: Submitted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 21 figure

Cinema-going trajectories in the digital age
The activity of cinema-going constantly evolves and gradually integrates the use of digital data and platforms to become more engaging for the audiences. Combining methods from the fields of Human Computer Interaction and Film Studies, we conducted two workshops seeking to understand cinema audiences’ digital practices and explore how the contemporary cinema-going experience is shaped in the digital age. Our findings suggest that going to the movies constitutes a trajectory during which cinemagoers interact with multiple digital platforms. At the same time, depending on their choices, they construct unique digital identities that represent a set of online behaviours and rituals that cinemagoers adopt before, while and after cinema-going. To inform the design of new, engaging cinemagoing experiences, this research establishes a preliminary map of contemporary cinema-going including digital data and platforms. We then discuss how audiences perceive the potential improvement of the experience and how that would lead to the construction of digital identities
Seismic assessment of a heavy-timber frame structure with ring-doweled moment-resisting connections
The performance of heavy-timber structures in earthquakes depends strongly on the inelastic behavior of the mechanical connections. Nevertheless, the nonlinear behavior of timber structures is only considered in the design phase indirectly through the use of an R-factor or a q-factor, which reduces the seismic elastic response spectrum. To improve the estimation of this, the seismic performance of a three-story building designed with ring-doweled moment resisting connections is analyzed here. Connections and members were designed to fulfill the seismic detailing requirements present in Eurocode 5 and Eurocode 8 for high ductility class structures. The performance of the structure is evaluated through a probabilistic approach, which accounts for uncertainties in mechanical properties of members and connections. Nonlinear static analyses and multi-record incremental dynamic analyses were performed to characterize the q-factor and develop fragility curves for different damage levels. The results indicate that the detailing requirements of Eurocode 5 and Eurocode 8 are sufficient to achieve the required performance, even though they also indicate that these requirements may be optimized to achieve more cost-effective connections and members. From the obtained fragility curves, it was verified that neglecting modeling uncertainties may lead to overestimation of the collapse capacity

A uniform specification of mixed reality interface components
This is a short presentation of a uniform approach for specifying mixed reality user interfaces, including 3D interaction techniques and 3D widgets. Our main goal is to facilitate the process of reusing previous work, so more complex applications can be built and documented in a formal and uniform way. We describe here the conceptual model of user interface components, which allows us to generalize user interface components and to port them to different hardware settings and application contexts. An XML-based specification language implements the conceptual model and allows for automatic processing and tool support
