An evaluation of the somatosensory profile of hemiparetic individuals

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the somatosensory profile of 18 hemiparetic spastic victims of stroke with and without blocking vision. Maximal isometric contraction test was used for flexor and extensor muscles of the hip and knee, and flexor plantar muscles. The number of cycles per minute on stationary bike was also measured with eyes opened and closed. Significant differences were found suggesting the existence of miscommunication between sensory-motor neural mechanisms responsible for voluntary motor actions in these individuals

Molecular Diagnosis Of Huntington Disease In Brazilian Patients.

Huntington disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance, characterized by choreiform movements and cognitive impairment. Onset of symptoms is around 40 years of age and progression to death occurs in approximately 10 to 15 years from the time of disease onset. HD is associated with an unstable CAG repeat expansion at the 5' and of the IT15 gene. We have genotyped the CAG repeat in the IT15 gene in 44 Brazilian individuals (42 patients and 2 unaffected family members) belonging to 34 unrelated families thought to segregate HD. We found one expanded CAG allele in 32 individuals (76%) belonging to 25 unrelated families. In these HD patients, expanded alleles varied from 43 to 73 CAG units and normal alleles varied from 18 to 26 CAGs. A significant negative correlation between age at onset of symptoms and size of the expanded CAG allele was found (r=0.6; p=0.0001); however, the size of the expanded CAG repeat could explain only about 40% of the variability in age at onset (r2=0.4). In addition, we genotyped 25 unrelated control individuals (total of 50 alleles) and found normal CAG repeats varying from 16 to 33 units. The percentage of heterozigocity of the normal allele in the control population was 88%. In conclusion, our results showed that not all patients with the HD phenotype carried the expansion at the IT15 gene. Furthermore, molecular diagnosis was possible in all individuals, since no alleles of intermediate size were found. Therefore, molecular confirmation of the clinical diagnosis in HD should be sought in all suspected patients, making it possible for adequate genetic counseling.5811-

Novos Isolados De Trichoderma Antagônicos A Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum

Forty-nine isolates of Trichoderma from the Brazilian Midwest were evaluated for their antagonistic activity in vitro against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (causal agent of white mold), which were then identified based on their nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences. Paired culture tests showed that all isolates exhibited some antagonism, with a maximum of 77% mycelial inhibition and complete inhibition of sclerotia production. Two isolates were found to be the most promising biocontrol agents, considering both antagonistic parameters (CEN1253 - T. koningiopsis and CEN1265 - T. brevicompactum). Five different species were identified: T. harzianum (23), T. spirale (9), T. koningiopsis (8), T. brevicompactum (7) and T. asperellum (2). These isolates are stored in the Embrapa Fungi Collection for Biological Control and the information obtained in the experiments will be incorporated into the database of biological assets within the genetic resources information system (Allele) and be made available for further studies. © 2016, Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP. In vivo assessment of gastrotomy closure with over-the-scope clips in an experimental model for varicocelectomy

BACKGROUND: Gastrotomy closure remains the major limiting factor for human translation of transgastric surgery; the over-the-scope clip (OTSC) system was proposed as a possibility for this purpose. Transgastric access is good for a pelvic approach, making varicocelectomy a possible indication for natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability of the OTSC system in vivo after transgastric testicular vessel ligation (varicocelectomy model). DESIGN: There were 3 experimental groups (5 animals in each): groups 1 and 3, gastrotomy dilation up to 18 mm, surgery was performed with a double-channel endoscope; group 2, gastrotomy dilation up to 13 mm, surgery was performed with a single-channel endoscope. SETTING: Surgical Sciences Research Domain, Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), School of Health Sciences, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. INTERVENTIONS: Bilateral testicular vessel ligation by transgastric access. Gastrotomy closed with the largest version of OTSC system (12 mm): a single clip in groups 1 and 2, and 2 clips in group 3. Animals were monitored for 2 weeks, killed, and submitted for necropsy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Adequacy of closure and healing after the use of the OTSC system. Statistical analysis. RESULTS: Vessel ligation was easily achieved in all groups. Although differences in the complication rate did not reach statistical significance (P = .099), there was a clear tendency for a better prognosis in groups 2 and 3 than group 1. In fact, only 2 animals from group 1 had complications related to incomplete gastrotomy closure. LIMITATIONS: Small number of animals per group; nonrandomized study. CONCLUSIONS: The OTSC system was shown to be easy and efficient for gastrotomy closure in a survival experimental model of varicocelectomy, when correctly matching the gastrotomy size with the clip size and/or number

Mapping gaps in sugarcane fields in unmanned aerial vehicle imagery using YOLOv5 and ImageJ.

Abstract: Sugarcane plays a pivotal role in the Brazilian economy as a primary crop. This semiperennial crop allows for multiple harvests throughout its life cycle. Given its longevity, farmers need to be mindful of avoiding gaps in sugarcane fields, as these interruptions in planting lines negatively impact overall crop productivity over the years. Recognizing and mapping planting failures becomes essential for replanting operations and productivity estimation. Due to the scale of sugarcane cultivation, manual identification and mapping prove impractical. Consequently, solutions utilizing drone imagery and computer vision have been developed to cover extensive areas, showing satisfactory effectiveness in identifying gaps. However, recognizing small gaps poses significant challenges, often rendering them unidentifiable. This study addresses this issue by identifying and mapping gaps of any size while allowing users to determine the gap size. Preliminary tests using YOLOv5 and ImageJ 1.53k demonstrated a high success rate, with a 96.1% accuracy in identifying gaps of 50 cm or larger. These results are favorable, especially when compared to previously published works
