Exotic superfluid states of lattice fermions in elongated traps

We present real-space dynamical mean-field theory calculations for attractively interacting fermions in three-dimensional lattices with elongated traps. The critical polarization is found to be 0.8, regardless of the trap elongation. Below the critical polarization, we find unconventional superfluid structures where the polarized superfluid and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-type states emerge across the entire core region

    Weak Localization Effect in Superconductors

We study the effect of weak localization on the transition temperatures of superconductors using time-reversed scattered state pairs, and find that the weak localization effect weakens electron-phonon interactions. With solving the BCS TcT_{c} equation, the calculated values for TcT_c are in good agreement with experimental data for various two- and three-dimensional disordered superconductors. We also find that the critical sheet resistance for the suppression of superconductivity in thin films does not satisfy the universal behavior but depends on sample, in good agreement with experiments. but depends on sample, in good agreement with experiments.Comment: 14 pages, Revtex, 5 ps figure

Generalized BFT Formalism of Electroweak Theory in the Unitary Gauge

We systematically embed the SU(2)×\timesU(1) Higgs model in the unitary gauge into a fully gauge-invariant theory by following the generalized BFT formalism. We also suggest a novel path to get a first-class Lagrangian directly from the original second-class one using the BFT fields.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, no figure

ZNZ_N orbifold compactifications in AdS6AdS_6 with Gauss-Bonnet term

We present a general setup for junctions of semi-infinite 4-branes in AdS6AdS_6 with the Gauss-Bonnet term. The 3-brane tension at the junction of 4-branes can be nonzero. Using the brane junctions as the origin of the ZNZ_N discrete rotation symmetry, we identify 3-brane tensions at three fixed points of the orbifold T2/Z3T^2/Z_3 in terms of the 4-brane tensions. As a result, the three 3-brane tensions can be simultaneously positive, which enables us to explain the mass hierarchy by taking one of two branes apart from the hidden brane as the visible brane, and hence does not introduce a severe cosmological problem.Comment: Latex file of 20 pages including 2 figure

One-Parameter Squeezed Gaussian States of Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator and Selection Rule for Vacuum States

By using the invariant method we find one-parameter squeezed Gaussian states for both time-independent and time-dependent oscillators. The squeezing parameter is expressed in terms of energy expectation value for time-independent case and represents the degree of mixing positive and negative frequency solutions for time-dependent case. A {\it minimum uncertainty proposal} is advanced to select uniquely vacuum states at each moment of time. We show that the Gaussian states with minimum uncertainty coincide with the true vacuum state for time-independent oscillator and the Bunch-Davies vacuum for a massive scalar field in a de Sitter spacetime.Comment: 13 Pages, ReVTeX, no figure

Room temperature photonic crystal defect lasers at near-infrared wavelengths in InGaAsP

    Get PDF
Room temperature lasing from optically pumped single defects in a two-dimensional (2-D) photonic bandgap (PBG) crystal is demonstrated. The high-Q optical microcavities are formed by etching a triangular array of air holes into a half-wavelength thick multiquantum-well waveguide. Defects in the 2-D photonic crystal are used to support highly localized optical modes with volumes ranging from 2 to 3 (lambda/2n)(3). Lithographic tuning of the air hole radius and the lattice spacing are used to match the cavity wavelength to the quantum-well gain peak, as well as to increase the cavity Q. The defect lasers were pumped with 10-30 ns pulses of 0.4-1% duty cycle. The threshold pump power was 1.5 mW (approximate to 500 μW absorbed)
