    Planetary companions orbiting M giants HD 208527 and HD 220074

    Aims. The purpose of the present study is to research the origin of planetary companions by using a precise radial velocity (RV) survey. Methods. The high-resolution spectroscopy of the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) is used from September 2008 to June 2012. Results. We report the detection of two exoplanets in orbit around HD 208527 and HD 220074 exhibiting periodic variations in RV of 875.5 +/- 5.8 and 672.1 +/- 3.7 days. The RV variations are not apparently related to the surface inhomogeneities and a Keplerian motion of the planetary companion is the most likely explanation. Assuming possible stellar masses of 1.6 +/- 0.4 and 1.2 +/- 0.3 M_Sun, we obtain the minimum masses for the exoplanets of 9.9 +/- 1.7 and 11.1 +/- 1.8 M_Jup around HD 208527 and HD 220074 with an orbital semi-major axis of 2.1 +/- 0.2 and 1.6 +/- 0.1 AU and an eccentricity of 0.08 and 0.14, respectively. We also find that the previously known spectral classification of HD 208527 and HD 220074 was in error: Our new estimation of stellar parameters suggest that both HD 208527 and HD 220074 are M giants. Therefore, HD 208527 and HD 220074 are so far the first candidate M giants to harbor a planetary companion.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publisation in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Electroexcitation of the Roper resonance in the relativistic quark models

    The amplitudes of the transition gamma* N -> P11(1440) are calculated within light-front relativistic quark model assuming that the P11(1440) is the first radial excitation of the 3q ground state. The results are presented along with the predictions obtained in other relativistic quark models. In comparison with the previous calculations, we have extended the range of Q^2 up to 4.5 GeV^2 to cover the kinematic interval of the forthcoming experimental data. Using approach based on PCAC, we have checked the relative sign between quark model predictions for the N and P11(1440) contributions to the pion electroproduction found in previous investigations.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted by PR

    Log canonical thresholds of Del Pezzo Surfaces in characteristic p

    The global log canonical threshold of each non-singular complex del Pezzo surface was computed by Cheltsov. The proof used Koll\'ar-Shokurov's connectedness principle and other results relying on vanishing theorems of Kodaira type, not known to be true in finite characteristic. We compute the global log canonical threshold of non-singular del Pezzo surfaces over an algebraically closed field. We give algebraic proofs of results previously known only in characteristic 00. Instead of using of the connectedness principle we introduce a new technique based on a classification of curves of low degree. As an application we conclude that non-singular del Pezzo surfaces in finite characteristic of degree lower or equal than 44 are K-semistable.Comment: 21 pages.     Quantum information processing based on P-31 nuclear spin qubits in a quasi-one-dimensional Si-28 nanowire

    We suggest a new method of quantum information processing based on the precise placing of P-31 isotope atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional Si-28 nanowire using isotope engineering and neutron-transmutation doping of the grown structures. In our structure, interqubit entanglement is based on the indirect interaction of P-31 nuclear spins with electrons localized in a nanowire. This allows one to control the coupling between distant qubits and between qubits separated by non-qubit neighboring nodes. The suggested method enables one to fabricate structures using present-day nanolithography. Numerical estimates show the feasibility of the proposed device and method of operation.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Aspects of Horava-Lifshitz cosmology

    We review some general aspects of Horava-Lifshitz cosmology. Formulating it in its basic version, we extract the cosmological equations and we use observational data in order to constrain the parameters of the theory. Through a phase-space analysis we extract the late-time stable solutions, and we show that eternal expansion, and bouncing and cyclic behavior can arise naturally. Concerning the effective dark energy sector we show that it can describe the phantom phase without the use of a phantom field. However, performing a detailed perturbation analysis, we see that Horava-Lifshitz gravity in its basic version suffers from instabilities.     Detection of an exoplanet around the evolved K giant HD 66141

    Aims. We have been carrying out a precise radial velocity (RV) survey for K giants to search for and study the origin of the lowamplitude and long-periodic RV variations. Methods. We present high-resolution RV measurements of the K2 giant HD 66141 from December 2003 to January 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). Results. We find that the RV measurements for HD 66141 exhibit a periodic variation of 480.5 +/- 0.5 days with a semi-amplitude of 146.2 +/- 2.7 m/s. The Hipparcos photometry and bisector velocity span (BVS) do not show any obvious correlations with RV variations. We find indeed 706.4 +/- 35.0 day variations in equivalent width (EW) measurements of H_alpha line and 703.0 +/- 39.4 day variations in a space-born measurements 1.25{\mu} flux of HD 66141 measured during COBE/DIRBE experiment. We reveal that a mean value of long-period variations is about 705 +/- 53 days and the origin is a rotation period of the star and variability that is caused by surface inhomogeneities. For the 480 day periods of RV variations an orbital motion is the most likely explanation. Assuming a stellar mass of 1.1 +/- 0.1 M_Sun? for HD 66141, we obtain a minimum mass for the planetary companion of 6.0 +/- 0.3 M_Jup with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.2 +/- 0.1 AU and an eccentricity of 0.07 +/- 0.03.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publisation in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Aims. We study the low-amplitude and long-period variations in evolved stars using precise radial velocity measurements. Methods. The high-resolution, fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) was used from September 2004 to May 2014 as part of the exoplanet search program at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). Results. We report the detection of low-amplitude and long-period orbital radial velocity variations in three evolved stars, HD 3574, 63 Cyg, and HD 216946.     Phase transition classes in triplet and quadruplet reaction diffusion models

    Phase transitions of reaction-diffusion systems with site occupation restriction and with particle creation that requires n=3,4 parents, whereas explicit diffusion of single particles (A) is present are investigated in low dimensions by mean-field approximation and simulations. The mean-field approximation of general nA -> (n+k)A, mA -> (m-l)A type of lattice models is solved and novel kind of critical behavior is pointed out. In d=2 dimensions the 3A -> 4A, 3A -> 2A model exhibits a continuous mean-field type of phase transition, that implies d_c<2 upper critical dimension. For this model in d=1 extensive simulations support a mean-field type of phase transition with logarithmic corrections unlike the Park et al.'s recent study (Phys. Rev E {\bf 66}, 025101 (2002)). On the other hand the 4A -> 5A, 4A -> 3A quadruplet model exhibits a mean-field type of phase transition with logarithmic corrections in d=2, while quadruplet models in 1d show robust, non-trivial transitions suggesting d_c=2. Furthermore I show that a parity conserving model 3A -> 5A, 2A->0 in d=1 has a continuous phase transition with novel kind of exponents. These results are in contradiction with the recently suggested implications of a phenomenological, multiplicative noise Langevin equation approach and with the simulations on suppressed bosonic systems by Kockelkoren and Chat\'e (cond-mat/0208497).Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures included, Updated with new data, figures, table, to be published in PR
