Universal Probability Distribution Function for Bursty Transport in Plasma Turbulence
Bursty transport phenomena associated with convective motion present
universal statistical characteristics among different physical systems. In this
letter, a stochastic univariate model and the associated probability
distribution function for the description of bursty transport in plasma
turbulence is presented. The proposed stochastic process recovers the universal
distribution of density fluctuations observed in plasma edge of several
magnetic confinement devices and the remarkable scaling between their skewness
and kurtosis . Similar statistical characteristics of variabilities have
been also observed in other physical systems that are characterized by
convection such as the X-ray fluctuations emitted by the Cygnus X-1 accretion
disc plasmas and the sea surface temperature fluctuations.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
The interaction of gravitational waves with strongly magnetized plasmas
We study the interaction of a gravitational wave (GW) with a plasma that is
strongly magnetized. The GW is considered a small disturbance, and the plasma
is modeled by the general relativistic analogue of the induction equation of
ideal MHD and the single fluid equations. The equations are derived without
neglecting any of the non-linear interaction terms, and the non-linear
equations are integrated numerically. We find that for strong magnetic fields
of the order of G the GW excites electromagnetic plasma waves very
close to the magnetosonic mode. The magnetic and electric field oscillations
have very high amplitude, and a large amount of energy is absorbed from the GW
by the electromagnetic oscillations, of the order of erg/cm in
the case presented here. The absorbed energy is proportional to , with
the background magnetic field. The energization of the plasma takes place
on fast time scales of the order of milliseconds. The amount of absorbed energy
is comparable to the energies emitted in the most energetic astrophysical
events, such as giant flares on magnetars and possibly even short Gamma ray
bursts (GRB), for which the mechanism analyzed here also has the fast
time-scales required.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, Eq. (7) and corresponding text is modifie
Validation of the effect of cross-calibrated GOES solar proton effective energies on derived integral fluxes by comparison with STEREO observations
The derivation of integral fluxes from instrument coincidence rates requires accurate knowledge of their effective energies. Recent cross calibrations of GOES with the high-energy-resolution Interplanetary Monitoring Platform (IMP) 8 Goddard Medium Energy Experiment (GME) (Sandberg et al., Geophys. Res. Lett, 41, 4435, 2014a) gave significantly lower effective energies than those currently used by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center to calculate solar proton integral fluxes from GOES rates. This implies systematically lower integral fluxes than currently produced. This paper quantifies the differences between the current and the cross-calibrated GOES integral fluxes and validates the latter. Care is taken to rule out the spectral resolution of the measurements or different integration algorithms as major contributors to differences in the magnitudes of the derived integral fluxes. The lower effective energies are validated by comparison with the independent, high-resolution observations by the STEREO Low-Energy Telescope (LET) and High-Energy Telescope (HET) during the December 2006 solar proton events. The current GOES product is similar to the >10 MeV integral fluxes recalculated by using the Sandberg et al. [2014a] effective energies but is substantially greater at higher energies. (The median ratios of the current to the recalculated fluxes are 1.1 at >10 MeV, 1.7 at >30 MeV, 2.1 at >60 MeV, and 2.9 at >100 MeV.) By virtue of this validation, the cross-calibrated GOES integral fluxes should be considered more accurate than the current NOAA product. The results of this study also demonstrate good consistency between the two long-term IMP 8 GME and STEREO LET and HET solar proton data sets
Navigability is a Robust Property
The Small World phenomenon has inspired researchers across a number of
fields. A breakthrough in its understanding was made by Kleinberg who
introduced Rank Based Augmentation (RBA): add to each vertex independently an
arc to a random destination selected from a carefully crafted probability
distribution. Kleinberg proved that RBA makes many networks navigable, i.e., it
allows greedy routing to successfully deliver messages between any two vertices
in a polylogarithmic number of steps. We prove that navigability is an inherent
property of many random networks, arising without coordination, or even
independence assumptions
Theoretical Properties of Projection Based Multilayer Perceptrons with Functional Inputs
Many real world data are sampled functions. As shown by Functional Data
Analysis (FDA) methods, spectra, time series, images, gesture recognition data,
etc. can be processed more efficiently if their functional nature is taken into
account during the data analysis process. This is done by extending standard
data analysis methods so that they can apply to functional inputs. A general
way to achieve this goal is to compute projections of the functional data onto
a finite dimensional sub-space of the functional space. The coordinates of the
data on a basis of this sub-space provide standard vector representations of
the functions. The obtained vectors can be processed by any standard method. In
our previous work, this general approach has been used to define projection
based Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs) with functional inputs. We study in this
paper important theoretical properties of the proposed model. We show in
particular that MLPs with functional inputs are universal approximators: they
can approximate to arbitrary accuracy any continuous mapping from a compact
sub-space of a functional space to R. Moreover, we provide a consistency result
that shows that any mapping from a functional space to R can be learned thanks
to examples by a projection based MLP: the generalization mean square error of
the MLP decreases to the smallest possible mean square error on the data when
the number of examples goes to infinity
Treatment of Auditory Processing in Noise in Individuals With Mild Aphasia: Pilot Study
Purpose: Listening in noise challenges listeners with auditory comprehension impairments in aphasia. We examined the effects of Trivia Game, a computerized program with questions spoken in increasing levels of background noise with success in the game.
Methods: We piloted Trivia Game in four individuals with chronic aphasia and mild auditory comprehension impairments. Participants played Trivia Game for 12 twenty-minute sessions. In addition to the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), we measured outcomes on Quick Speech in Noise (QSIN), a sentence repetition test, administered in auditory (AUD) and auditory+visual (AV) conditions as signal-to-noise ratio varied from 25 to 0 dB.
Results: All four participants showed progress within the game in the noise level attained. Increases in repetition accuracy were seen in two participants for the QSIN AUD condition (average of 5.5 words), and in three participants for QSIN AV (average of 16.5 words). One individual increased performance on the WAB.
Conclusions: Use of Trivia Game led to improved auditory processing abilities in all four individuals with aphasia. Greater gains noted in the AV condition over AUD suggest that Trivia Game may facilitate speech-reading skills to support comprehension of speech in situations with background noise
Analysis and Simulation of Main Magnet Transmission Line Effect
A main magnet chain forms a pair of transmission lines. Pulse-reflection-caused voltage and current differentiation throughout the magnet chain can have adverse effect on main magnet field quality. This effect is associated with magnet system configuration, coupling efficiency, and parasitic parameters. A better understanding of this phenomenon will help us in new design and existing system upgrade. In this paper, we exam the transmission line effect due to different input functions as well as configuration, coupling, and other parameters
