Lit i zastosowanie związków tego pierwiastka w różnych dziedzinach medycyny
Although lithium has not been classified as an essential element for humans, it can influence
numerous metabolic processes and exert diverse effects in the human body, both positive
and negative ones. Its actions enable the use of lithium compounds in therapy of different illnesses.
It is mostly used for cure of psychiatric disorders: as a mood stabilizer and for intensifying
the action of antidepressants. However, its compounds have been also tried in other fields of
medicine: as an adjuvant in patients with thyroid diseases undergoing radioiodine therapy, in
dermatology, in cure of neurodegenerative and ophthalmic illnesses as well as in tumour therapy.
Lithium displays beneficial action only within a determined range of its serum concentration
and an overrun of the safe threshold can cause side effects. Due to this fact, the Li serum level
as well as many other factors, e.g.: body weight, creatinine, renal and thyroid functions should
be monitored during the whole therapy. Many studies were undertaken to clarify the mechanism
by which lithium affects organisms but the results still remain unsatisfactory. Nevertheless,
some interesting aspects of lithium action have been revealed, including its effect on the
enzymatic activity, neurodegenerative processes, apoptosis, formation of cytokines as well as
neurotransmission and oxidant balance.
wspomagania terapii radiojodem stosowanej w chorobach tarczycy, w dermatologii, w leczeniu
litu, m.in. wpływ na aktywność enzymatyczną, procesy neurodegeneracyjne i neurotransmisyjne,

The influence of selenium compounds of different structure on morphology, blood biochemistry and phagocytic capability of granulocytes in rats
Background. Selenium belongs to important microelements. Numerous studies have revealed relationships between its
deficiency and occurrence of diverse illnesses, but the question of the proper form and dose of Se-supplementation still
remains unsolved.
Objective. In the present study the influence of different selenium compounds on blood morphology and biochemistry as
well as on phagocytic capacity of granulocytes and NBT test in rats was investigated.
Material and methods. Adolescent male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (ten animals each): I – control, received
saline; II – received sodium selenite Na2SeO3; III – received selenoorganic compound A of chain structure 4-(o-tolyl-)-selenosemicarbazide
of 2-chlorobenzoic acid; IV – received selenoorganic compound B of cyclic structure 3-(2-chlorobenzoylamino-)-
2-(o-tolylimino-)-4-methyl-4-selenazoline. The administration was performed by stomach tube at a dose of 5 · 10-4
mg Se g-1 b.w. once a day for 10 days.
Results. Selenium compounds treatment decreased haematocrit. Erythrocytes number was unchanged in all groups receiving
Se vs. control, whereas leucocytes number was depressed in groups II and IV. Haemoglobin was significantly decreased
in group III. White blood count was altered in groups II and III, where all parameters were markedly decreased except for
lymphocytes in group III and remained unchanged in group IV. The outcomes regarding selenium effect on biochemistry
parameters of blood showed that urea remained unchanged, glucose was statistically decreased in groups II and III, whereas
cholesterol was significantly diminished in group II and increased in group III vs. control. Results concerning phagocytosis
and NBT test displayed that % of positive cells were decreased in groups II and III, whereas remained unaltered in group
IV vs. control.
Conclusions. As cyclic selenoorganic compound B did not cause many significant changes of the studied parameters it may
be suggested that after further researches it could be taken into account as a possible selenium supplement.Wprowadzenie. Selen należy do mikropierwiastków o dużym znaczeniu dla organizmu. Badania naukowe wykazały
istnienie zależności pomiędzy niedoborem selenu a występowaniem wielu poważnych schorzeń, jednakże kwestia doboru
odpowiedniej formy i dawki stosowanej w suplementacji nadal pozostaje nierozwiązana.
Cel. W przeprowadzonym doświadczeniu badano wpływ podawania różnych związków selenu na morfologię krwi i biochemię
krwi oraz zdolności fagocytarne granulocytów i test NBT u szczurów.
Materiał i metody. Młode szczury samce rasy Wistar podzielono na cztery grupy (po 10 zwierząt): I – kontrola, otrzymywała
sól fizjologiczną; II – otrzymywała selenian(IV) sodu Na2SeO3; III – otrzymywała organiczny związek selenu A o budowie
łańcuchowej 4-(o-tolilo-)-selenosemikarbazyd kwasu 2-chlorobenzoesowego; IV - otrzymywała organiczny związek selenu B
o budowie cyklicznej 3-(2-chlorobenzoiloamino-)-2-(o-toliloimino-)-4-metylo-4-selenazolinę. Związki podawane były sondą
dożołądkowo w dawce 5 · 10-4 mg Se g-1 m.c. raz dziennie przez okres 10 dni.
Wyniki. Podawanie związków selenu obniżyło hematokryt. Liczba erytrocytów we wszystkich grupach pozostała niezmieniona
w stosunku do kontroli a liczba leukocytów była zmniejszona w grupach II i IV. Poziom hemoglobiny został obniżony
statystycznie w grupie III. Obraz białych elementów morfotycznych w porównaniu do kontroli uległ zmianie w grupach
II i III gdzie wszystkie wskaźniki zostały istotnie statystycznie obniżone za wyjątkiem limfocytów w grupie III, natomiast
w grupie IV nie zaobserwowano żadnych zmian. Analizując wpływ podawania selenu na parametry biochemiczne krwi
stwierdzono, że stężenie mocznika pozostało niezmienione. Stężenie glukozy w przypadku grup II i III uległo istotnemu statystycznie obniżeniu. Stężenie cholesterolu w II grupie było istotnie obniżone a w III podwyższone w porównaniu
z kontrolą. Badania fagocytozy i wyniki testu NBT wykazały, że % pozytywnych komórek uległ obniżeniu w grupach II
i III w stosunku do grupy kontrolnej i pozostał niezmieniony w grupie IV.
Wnioski.
Magnesium and selenium belong to important bioelements. Magnesium is the second
most abundant intracellular macroelement, which takes part in the metabolism of carbohydrates,
nucleic acids, protein and lipids. Selenium is an essential microelement, whose
deficit has been stated in many different pathological states. Much research on safe and
effective selenium supplementation has been performed for the last fifty years but the
results still remain unsatisfactory.
The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of inorganic sodium selenite
Na2SeO3 and two selenoorganic compounds synthetized at our chair on magnesium concentration
in tissues of adolescent male Wistar rats. Inorganic selenite was administered
as a water solution, whereas organic compounds: 4-(o-tolilo)-selenosemikarbazyd of 2-chlorobenzoic
acid of a chain structure (ORG-C) and 3-(o-chlorobenzoylamino)-2-(o-tolylimino)-4-
-methyl-4-selenazoline of a ring structure (ORG-R) were suspended in emulsion (oil, arabic
gum and water). Selenium compounds were given to rats at a dose of 5⋅10–4 mg Se g–1
b.w. once a day for a period of 10 days. The control group was treated with saline. The
administration was performed with use of a stomach tube.
In comparison to the control group, selenium supplementation caused decrease in magnesium
concentration in kidney and lung tissues, but did not cause any changes in the
brain and heart muscle. In the liver and spleen it was only ring selenazoline that affected
magnesium concentration, increasing it in the liver and decreasing in the spleen. In the
femoral muscle it was only the selenosemicarbazide chain that exerted the significant effect
causing a decrease in Mg concentration vs the control group.
Selenium supplementation influences the tissue magnesium concentrations depending
on tissue and structure of the supplement. Irrespective of the administered compound, it
lowered magnesium in kidneys and lungs but caused no changes in the brain and heart
muscle. In the liver, spleen and femoral muscle, alterations in the magnesium concentration
were dependent on the provided supplement.
białek i lipidów.
Nieorganiczny selenian(IV) sodu podawano w postaci
wodnego roztworu, natomiast organiczne związki selenu: 4-(o-tolilo)-selenosemikarbazyd
kwasu 2-chlorobenzesowego (ORG-C, budowa łańcuchowa) i 3-(2-chlorobenzoiloamino-
)-2-(o-toliloimino-)-4-metylo-4-selenazolina (ORG-R, budowa pierścieniowa) w formie emulsji
złożonej z oleju, gumy arabskiej i wody. Grupa kontrolna otrzymywała sól fizjologiczną.
Związki podawano sondą dożołądkowo w dawce 5⋅10–4 mg Se g–1 m.c. 1 raz dziennie przez
okres 10 dni.
W porównaniu z grupą kontrolną nieotrzymującą selenu, suplementacja związkami Se
wpłynęła na statystyczny spadek stężenia magnezu w tkankach nerki i płuca, natomiast
nie spowodowała żadnych zmian w tkance mózgu i mięśnia serca. W tkance wątroby i śledziony
jedynie cykliczna selenazolina wpłynęła na stężenie magnezu – w wątrobie zaobserwowano
wzrost, a w śledzionie spadek. W tkance mięśnia uda jedynie łańcuchowy selenosemikarbazyd
wywarł istotny wpływ, powodując obniżenie stężenia Mg w stosunku do grupy
kontrolnej.
rodzaju tkanki i struktury zastosowanego suplementu. Niezależnie od budowy podawanego
związku, zaobserwowano obniżenie stężenia magnezu w tkance nerki i płuca, natomiast
nie zauważono żadnych zmian w mózgu i mięśniu serca. W tkankach wątroby, śledziony
i mięśnia uda zmiany stężenia magnezu były zależne od rodzaju podawanego związku
Level of magnesium in patients with depression treated with lithium – pilotage research
Introduction. Depression is a major public health problem. Magnesium (Mg2+) is involved in many metabolic processes as
an activator of over 300 different enzymes. For the last 60 years lithium (Li+) compounds have been used in psychiatry. Li+
salts are regarded as the first choice medicine in the treatment of affective disorders and are also applied as an adjuvant
intensifying the therapy in drug-resistant depression patients.
Objective. The objective of the study was an analysis of the relationship between the levels of magnesium, lithium, and
education and place of residence of patients hospitalized due to depression.
Material and methods. Patients with bipolar affective disorders undergoing lithium therapy during their stay in the
Department of Psychiatry at the Medical University in Lublin were examined. Patients were divided into three groups
according to education level and were also analyzed according to place of residence.
Results. In the group of patients in the study, a significantly lower level of magnesium was found (p=0.02) in blood plasma
of patients with secondary education level, compared to those who had elementary education. There was also a significantly
higher level of magnesium (p=0.01) in blood plasma of patients who lived in urban areas, compared to rural inhabitants. No
statistically significant differences were noted between lithium level in plasma, and the patients’ place of residence (p=0.34).
Conclusion. Significantly higher plasma magnesium levels were observed among city than village inhabitants, there was
also a relationship between type of education and magnesium level in blood plasma of the patients in the study. Further
studies including larger groups of patients should be performed to enable a final conclusion

Selenium prevents lithium accumulation and does not disturb basic microelement homeostasis in liver and kidney of rats exposed to lithium
Introduction. Lithium has been used in medicine for almost seventy years. Besides beneficial effects, its therapy may cause serious side-effects, with kidney and liver being the organs most vulnerable to its harmful influence. Therefore, research on protective agents against lithium toxicity has been continuing for some time.
Objective. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the influence of additional selenium supplementation on lithium content, as well as homeostasis of the essential microelements iron, zinc, copper and manganese in kidney and liver of rats undergoing lithium exposure.
Materials and method. The study was performed on 4 groups of male Wistar rats (6 animals each) treated with: control – saline; Li-group – Li2CO3 at a dose of 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w.; Se-group – Na2SeO3 at a dose of 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.; Li+Se-group – both Li2CO3 and Na2SeO3 at doses of 2.7 mg Li/kg b.w. and of 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w., respectively, in the form of water solutions
by stomach tube, once a day for 3 weeks. The content of the studied elements in the organ samples was determined using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS).
Results. Lithium administered alone caused a significant increase in its content in liver and kidney. Additional supplementation with selenium reversed these effects, and did not markedly affect other studied microelements compared to control.
Conclusions. The obtained results suggest that selenium could be regarded as an adjuvant into lithium therapy. However, considering the limitations of the present study (the short duration, using only one dose and form of selenium) the continuation of the research seems to be necessary to clarify the influence of selenium supplementation on basic microelements and lithium accumulation in organs during lithium exposure
Correlations among plasma silicon, magnesium and calcium in patients with knee osteoarthritis - analysis in consideration of gender
Introduction and objective. Osteoarthrits (OA) is a complex, chronic disorder of cartilage and bone, related to homeostasis
of bioelements. The current study aimed at evaluation of correlations between plasma silicon, magnesium and ionized
calcium in OA patients in consideration to gender.
Materials and method. The study comprised 59 patients aged 69.5±9.0 years (18 males aged 66.8±9.2; 41 females aged
70.7±8.8), admitted to the Trauma and Orthopaedic Ward of the Independent Public Health Care Centre in Łęczna, Poland,
due to OA and qualified to surgery. Control group consisted of 19 subjects without OA (54.5±8.6 years; 10 males aged
41.3±9.3; 9 females aged 69.1±14.9). Plasma concentrations of silicon and magnesium (spectrophotometric methods) and
ionized calcium (potentiometric method) were determined.
Results. Silicon in OA patients was significantly increased vs. control. In OA males and OA females, silicon was enhanced vs. the
respective controls, but it was statistically significant only in males. Magnesium in OA patients was not significantly different
from control group. In females, a significant decrease vs. the respective control was observed. No significant differences were
observed in the case of ionized calcium. Positive correlations between silicon and magnesium in healthy control, both in the
whole group and in male and female subgroups, were noted, while no such effect was observed in OA subjects.
Conclusions. The results might suggest some connection between higher OA incidence in women and the depleted
magnesium in the organism. Silicon increase in OA patients, especially in men, may indicate its intense metabolism during
the articular inflammatory process, likely dependent on sex hormones. It remains open whether the plasma Si increase is
the effect or cause of OA
