NS Fivebrane and Tachyon Condensation
We argue that a semi-infinite D6-brane ending on an NS5-brane can be obtained
from the condensation of the tachyon on the unstable D9-brane of type IIA
theory. The construction uses a combination of the descriptions of these branes
as solitons of the worldvolume theory of the D9-brane. The NS5-brane, in
particular, involves a gauge bundle which is operator valued, and hence is
better thought of as a gerbe.Comment: 20 pages, harvma
Effect of the Carbohydrate Composition of feed Concentratates on Methane Emission from dairy Cows and Their Slurry
Dietary carbohydrate effects on methane emission from cows and their slurry were measured on an individual animal basis. Twelve dairy cows were fed three of six diets each (n = 6 per diet) of a forage-to-concentrate ratio of 1:1 (dry matter basis), and designed to cover the cows' requirements. The forages consisted of maize and grass silage, and hay. Variations were exclusively accomplished in the concentrates which were either rich in lignified or non-lignified fiber, pectin, fructan, sugar or starch. To measure methane emission, cows were placed into open-circuit respiration chambers and slurry was stored for 14 weeks in 60-L barrels with slurry being intermittently connected to this system. The enteric and slurry organic matter digestibility and degradation was highest when offering Jerusalem artichoke tubers rich in fructan, while acid-detergent fiber digestibility and degradation were highest in cows and slurries with the soybean hulls diet rich in non-lignified fiber. Multiple regression analysis, based on nutrients either offered or digested, suggested that, when carbohydrate variation is done in concentrate, sugar enhances enteric methanogenesis. The methane emission from the slurry accounted for 16.0 to 21.9% of total system methane emission. Despite a high individual variation, the methane emission from the slurry showed a trend toward lower values, when the dietwas characterized by lignified fiber, a diet where enteric methane release also had been lowest. The study disproved the assumption that a lower enteric methanogenesis, associated with a higher excretion of fiber, will inevitably lead to compensatory increases in methane emission during slurry storag
Four-modulus "Swiss Cheese" chiral models
We study the 'Large Volume Scenario' on explicit, new, compact, four-modulus
Calabi-Yau manifolds. We pay special attention to the chirality problem pointed
out by Blumenhagen, Moster and Plauschinn. Namely, we thoroughly analyze the
possibility of generating neutral, non-perturbative superpotentials from
Euclidean D3-branes in the presence of chirally intersecting D7-branes. We find
that taking proper account of the Freed-Witten anomaly on non-spin cycles and
of the Kaehler cone conditions imposes severe constraints on the models.
Nevertheless, we are able to create setups where the constraints are solved,
and up to three moduli are stabilized.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures, clarifying comments added, minor mistakes

On Free Quotients of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Manifolds
In order to find novel examples of non-simply connected Calabi-Yau
threefolds, free quotients of complete intersections in products of projective
spaces are classified by means of a computer search. More precisely, all
automorphisms of the product of projective spaces that descend to a free action
on the Calabi-Yau manifold are identified.Comment: 39 pages, 3 tables, LaTe
On the Classification of Quasihomogeneous Functions
We give a criterion for the existence of a non-degenerate quasihomogeneous
polynomial in a configuration, i.e. in the space of polynomials with a fixed
set of weights, and clarify the relation of this criterion to the necessary
condition derived from the formula for the Poincar\'e polynomial. We further
prove finiteness of the number of configurations for a given value of the
singularity index. For the value 3 of this index, which is of particular
interest in string theory, a constructive version of this proof implies an
algorithm for the calculation of all non-degenerate configurations.Comment: 12 page
Thermodynamic basis of the concept of "recombination resistances"
The concept of "recombination resistance" introduced by Shockley and Read
(Phys. Rev. 87, 835 (1952)) is discussed within the framework of the
thermodynamics of irreversible processes ruled by the principle of the minimum
rate of entropy production. It is shown that the affinities of recombination
processes represent "voltages" in a thermodynamic Ohm-like law where the net
rates of recombinations represent the "currents". The quantities thus found
allow for the definition of the "dissipated power" which is to be related to
the rate of entropy production of the recombination processes dealt with.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Fluctuating-friction molecular motors
We show that the correlated stochastic fluctuation of the friction
coefficient can give rise to long-range directional motion of a particle
undergoing Brownian random walk in a constant periodic energy potential
landscape. The occurrence of this motion requires the presence of two
additional independent bodies interacting with the particle via friction and
via the energy potential, respectively, which can move relative to each other.
Such three-body system generalizes the classical Brownian ratchet mechanism,
which requires only two interacting bodies. In particular, we describe a simple
two-level model of fluctuating-friction molecular motor that can be solved
analytically. In our previous work [M.K., L.M and D.P. 2000 J. Nonlinear Opt.
Phys. Mater. vol. 9, 157] this model has been first applied to understanding
the fundamental mechanism of the photoinduced reorientation of dye-doped liquid
crystals. Applications of the same idea to other fields such as molecular
biology and nanotechnology can however be envisioned. As an example, in this
paper we work out a model of the actomyosin system based on the
fluctuating-friction mechanism.Comment: to be published in J. Physics Condensed Matter

Patterns and localized structures in bistable semiconductor resonators
We report experiments on spatial switching dynamics and steady state
structures of passive nonlinear semiconductor resonators of large Fresnel
number. Extended patterns and switching front dynamics are observed and
investigated. Evidence of localization of structures is given.Comment: 5 pages with 9 figure
Few smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points
We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of
Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear
system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative
integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n
lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12
lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the
number of lattice points on edges to prove finiteness.Comment: 20+2 pages; major revision: new author, new structure, new result
