DNA double-strand breaks induced by high NaCl occur predominantly in gene deserts
High concentration of NaCl increases DNA breaks both in cell culture and in vivo. The breaks remain elevated as long as NaCl concentration remains high and are rapidly repaired when the concentration is lowered. The exact nature of the breaks, and their location, has not been entirely clear, and it has not been evident how cells survive, replicate, and maintain genome integrity in environments like the renal inner medulla in which cells are constantly exposed to high NaCl concentration. Repair of the breaks after NaCl is reduced is accompanied by formation of foci containing phosphorylated H2AX (γH2AX), which occurs around DNA double-strand breaks and contributes to their repair. Here, we confirm by specific comet assay and pulsed-field electrophoresis that cells adapted to high NaCl have increased levels of double-strand breaks. Importantly, γH2AX foci that occur during repair of the breaks are nonrandomly distributed in the mouse genome. By chromatin immunoprecipitation using anti-γH2AX antibody, followed by massive parallel sequencing (ChIP-Seq), we find that during repair of double-strand breaks induced by high NaCl, γH2AX is predominantly localized to regions of the genome devoid of genes (“gene deserts”), indicating that the high NaCl-induced double-strand breaks are located there. Localization to gene deserts helps explain why the DNA breaks are less harmful than are the random breaks induced by genotoxic agents such as UV radiation, ionizing radiation, and oxidants. We propose that the universal presence of NaCl around animal cells has directly influenced the evolution of the structure of their genomes
Lamellodiscus aff. euzeti Diamanka, Boudaya, Toguebaye & Pariselle, 2011 (Monogenea: Diplectanidae) from the gills of Cheimerius nufar (Valenciennes) (Pisces: Sparidae) collected in the Arabian Sea, with comments on the distribution, specificity and historical biogeography of Lamellodiscus spp.
Specimens of Lamellodiscus Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 (Monogenea: Diplectanidae) were collected from the gills of Cheimerius nufar (Valenciennes) (Sparidae) in the Arabian Sea. All of these parasites belonged to one and the same species, which is morphologically very close to L. euzeti Diamanka, Boudaya, Toguebaye & Pariselle, 2011. A different host, distant locality and small morphological differences compared with the original description of L. euzeti acted as a stimulus for a detailed redescription. The specimens from the Arabian Sea differ slightly in the details of the male copulatory organ (MCO) from the type-specimens of L. euzeti, which were re-examined, and from the respective drawings in its original description. Such differences include a longer inner process of the large element of the accessory piece associated with the proximal part of the copulatory tube, a longer point on the small element of the accessory piece associated with the distal part of the copulatory tube, and the presence of a smooth or slightly folded inner margin of this element rather than structures resembling spines which occur in the typespecimens of L. euzeti. Therefore, the present specimens infecting C. nufar in the Indo-Pacific may represent a different, but morphologically very similar species to the Atlantic form L. euzeti; consequently, they are recognised here as Lamellodiscus aff. euzeti. This form belongs to the ‘ignoratus s. str.’ subgroup of the genus. The composition of this subgroup is redefined to comprise 17 species, including L. corallinus Paperna, 1965 but excluding L. acanthopagri Roubal, 1981, and the morphology of the MCO of representatives of this group is clarified. A link between the diversity of Lamellodiscus species and the ancestral origin of present-day sparid species in the Tethys Sea is suggested. It is shown that Lamellodiscus spp. exhibit rather high levels of specificity to their hosts, since half of them parasitise only a single host species and c.90% infect closely related host species. Comparison of the levels of host-specificity of the species of this genus with other narrowly specific genera of the Dactylogyridea revealed that their estimations are comparable. The possibility of intrahost speciation within Lamellodiscus is discussed. One-Dimensional Discrete Stark Hamiltonian and Resonance Scattering by Impurities
A one-dimensional discrete Stark Hamiltonian with a continuous electric field
is constructed by extension theory methods. In absence of the impurities the
model is proved to be exactly solvable, the spectrum is shown to be simple,
continuous, filling the real axis; the eigenfunctions, the resolvent and the
spectral measure are constructed explicitly. For this (unperturbed) system the
resonance spectrum is shown to be empty. The model considering impurity in a
single node is also constructed using the operator extension theory methods.
The spectral analysis is performed and the dispersion equation for the
resolvent singularities is obtained. The resonance spectrum is shown to contain
infinite discrete set of resonances. One-to-one correspondence of the
constructed Hamiltonian to some Lee-Friedrichs model is established.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, no figure
Measurements of integral muon intensity at large zenith angles
High-statistics data on near-horizontal muons collected with Russian-Italian
coordinate detector DECOR are analyzed. Precise measurements of muon angular
distributions in zenith angle interval from 60 to 90 degrees have been
performed. In total, more than 20 million muons are selected. Dependences of
the absolute integral muon intensity on zenith angle for several threshold
energies ranging from 1.7 GeV to 7.2 GeV are derived. Results for this region
of zenith angles and threshold energies have been obtained for the first time.
The dependence of integral intensity on zenith angle and threshold energy is

О распределении гипоцентров землетрясений в очаговых зонах центральной части Северного Кавказа в 2018 году по данным СОФ ФИЦ ЕГС РАН
Based on results of observation and distribution of the earthquakes hypocenters, brief analysis of allocation and clarification of the focus zones at the central part of the Northern Caucasus territory was conducted. General regions of accumulation of the earthquakes focuses in these zones were determined. Correlation of the focus zones with the tectonic structures of the studied area is discussed.Дан краткий анализ выделения и уточнения по данным сейсмичности очаговых зон центральной части Северного Кавказа с определением основных скоплений очагов землетрясений (узлов) в их пределах. Pilot Study of Massage in Veterans with Knee Osteoarthritis

Work functions, ionization potentials, and in-between: Scaling relations based on the image charge model
We revisit a model in which the ionization energy of a metal particle is
associated with the work done by the image charge force in moving the electron
from infinity to a small cut-off distance just outside the surface. We show
that this model can be compactly, and productively, employed to study the size
dependence of electron removal energies over the range encompassing bulk
surfaces, finite clusters, and individual atoms. It accounts in a
straightforward manner for the empirically known correlation between the atomic
ionization potential (IP) and the metal work function (WF), IP/WF2. We
formulate simple expressions for the model parameters, requiring only a single
property (the atomic polarizability or the nearest neighbor distance) as input.
Without any additional adjustable parameters, the model yields both the IP and
the WF within 10% for all metallic elements, as well as matches the size
evolution of the ionization potentials of finite metal clusters for a large
fraction of the experimental data. The parametrization takes advantage of a
remarkably constant numerical correlation between the nearest-neighbor distance
in a crystal, the cube root of the atomic polarizability, and the image force
cutoff length. The paper also includes an analytical derivation of the relation
of the outer radius of a cluster of close-packed spheres to its geometric
