    Extreme Type-II Superconductors in a Magnetic Field: A Theory of Critical Fluctuations

    A theory of critical fluctuations in extreme type-II superconductors subjected to a finite but weak external magnetic field is presented. It is shown that the standard Ginzburg-Landau representation of this problem can be recast, with help of a novel mapping, as a theory of a new "superconductor", in an effective magnetic field whose overall value is zero, consisting of the original uniform field and a set of neutralizing unit fluxes attached to NΦN_{\Phi} fluctuating vortex lines. The long distance behavior is related to the anisotropic gauge theory in which the original magnetic field plays the role of "charge". The consequences of this "gauge theory" scenario for the critical behavior in high temperature superconductors are explored in detail, with particular emphasis on questions of 3D XY vs. Landau level scaling, physical nature of the vortex "line liquid" and the true normal state, and fluctuation thermodynamics and transport.     Hadronic Structure in the Decay τππ0ντ\tau^{-}\to \pi^{-}\pi^{0}\nu_{\tau}

    We report on a study of the invariant mass spectrum of the hadronic system in the decay tau- -> pi- pi0 nu_tau. This study was performed with data obtained with the CLEO II detector operating at the CESR e+ e- collider. We present fits to phenomenological models in which resonance parameters associated with the rho(770) and rho(1450) mesons are determined. The pi- pi0 spectral function inferred from the invariant mass spectrum is compared with data on e+ e- -> pi+ pi- as a test of the Conserved Vector Current theorem.     A Search for Charmless BVVB\to VV Decays

    We have studied two-body charmless decays of the BB meson into the final states ρ0ρ0\rho^0 \rho^0, K0ρ0K^{*0} \rho^0, K0K0K^{*0} K^{*0}, K0K0ˉK^{*0} \bar{K^{*0}}, K+ρ0K^{*+} \rho^0, K+K0ˉK^{*+} \bar{K^{*0}}, and K+KK^{*+} K^{*-} using only decay modes with charged daughter particles. Using 9.7 million BBˉB \bar{B} pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we place 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions, (0.467.0)×105(0.46-7.0)\times 10^{-5}, depending on final state and polarization.Comment: 8 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Correlated /\c-/\cbar production in e+e- annihilations at sqrt{s}~10.5 GeV

    Using 13.6/fb of continuum two-jet e+e- -> ccbar events collected with the CLEO detector, we have searched for baryon number correlations at the primary quark level. We have measured the likelihood for a /\c+ charmed baryon to be produced in the hemisphere opposite a /\c- relative to the likelihood for a /\c+ charmed baryon to be produced opposite an anticharmed meson Dbar; in all cases, the reconstructed hadrons must have momentum greater than 2.3 GeV/c. We find that, given a /\c- (reconstructed in five different decay modes), a /\c+ is observed in the opposite hemisphere (0.72+/-0.11)% of the time (not corrected for efficiency). By contrast, given a Dbar in one hemisphere, a /\c+ is observed in the opposite hemisphere only (0.21+/-0.02)% of the time. Normalized to the total number of either /\c- or Dbar ``tags'', it is therefore 3.52+/-0.45+/-0.42 times more likely to find a /\c+ opposite a /\c- than a Dbar meson. This enhancement is not observed in the JETSET 7.3 e+e- -> ccbar Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, one figure separat

    Flavor-Specific Inclusive B Decays to Charm

    We have measured the branching fractions for B -> D_bar X, B -> D X, and B -> D_bar X \ell^+ \nu, where ``B'' is an average over B^0 and B^+, ``D'' is a sum over D^0 and D^+, and``D_bar'' is a sum over D^0_bar and D^-. From these results and some previously measured branching fractions, we obtain Br(b -> c c_bar s) = (21.9 ±\pm 3.7)%, Br(b -> s g) K^- \pi^+) = (3.69 ±\pm 0.20)%. Implications for the ``B semileptonic decay problem'' (measured branching fraction being below theoretical expectations) are discussed.     Measurement of the BˉDνˉ\bar{B}\to D\ell\bar{\nu} Partila Width and Form Factor Parameters

    We have studied the decay BˉDνˉ\bar{B} \to D\ell\bar{\nu}, where =eorμ\ell=e or \mu. From a fit to the differential decay rate dΓ/dwd\Gamma/dw we measure the rate normalization FD(1)Vcb{\cal F}_D(1)|V_{cb}| and form factor slope ρ^D2\hat{\rho}^2_D, and, using measured values of τB\tau_B, find Γ(BˉDνˉ)=(12.0±0.9±2.1)ns1\Gamma(\bar{B} \to D\ell\bar{\nu}) = (12.0 \pm 0.9 \pm 2.1) ns^{-1}. The resulting branching fractions are B(Bˉ0D+νˉ)=(1.87±0.15±0.32){\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^+\ell^-\bar{\nu})=(1.87 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.32)% and B(BD0νˉ)=(1.94±0.15±0.34){\cal B}(B^- \to D^0\ell^-\bar{\nu})=(1.94 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.34)%. The form factor parameters are in agreement with those measured in BˉDνˉ\bar{B} \to D^*\ell\bar{\nu} decays, as predicted by heavy quark effective theory.Comment: 11 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Update of the Search for the Neutrinoless Decay τμγ\tau\to \mu\gamma

    We present an update of the search for the lepton family number violating decay τμγ\tau \to \mu\gamma using a complete CLEO II data sample of 12.6 million τ+τ\tau^+\tau^- pairs. No evidence of a signal has been found and the corresponding upper limit is \BR(\tau \to \mu\gamma) < 1.0 \times 10^{-6} at 90% CL, significantly smaller than previous limits.     Measurement of Charge Asymmetries in Charmless Hadronic in B Meson Decays

    We search for CP-violating asymmetries (Acp) in the B meson decays to K+- pi-+, K+- pi0, Ks pi+-, K+- eta', and omega pi+-. Using 9.66 million Upsilon(4S) decays collected with the CLEO detector, the statistical precision on Acp is in the range of \pm 0.12 to \pm 0.25 depending on decay mode. While CP-violating asymmetries of up to \pm 0.5 are possible within the Standard Model, the measured asymmetries are consistent with zero in all five decay modes studied.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    First Observation of barB0 to D*0 pi+pi+pi-pi- Decays

    We report on the observation of B0bar -> D*0 pi+ pi+ pi- pi- decays. The branching ratio is (0.30 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.06)%.
