    Agricultural extension policy in Australia: public funding and market failure

    Trends in public expenditure on agricultural extension are examined for Agriculture Departments in four States. There is little evidence that the share of public resources going to extension has declined. However, new demands have meant that the nature of extension has changed. A strategic approach to examining issues, such as land degradation, for the source of market failure may better guide the use of scarce public resources than the traditional focus on the public goods characteristics of research and extension.     Micro-eukaryotic diversity in hypolithons from Miers Valley, Antarctica

    The discovery of extensive and complex hypolithic communities in both cold and hot deserts has raised many questions regarding their ecology, biodiversity and relevance in terms of regional productivity. However, most hypolithic research has focused on the bacterial elements of the community. This study represents the first investigation of micro-eukaryotic communities in all three hypolith types. Here we show that Antarctic hypoliths support extensive populations of novel uncharacterized bryophyta, fungi and protists and suggest that well known producer-decomposer-predator interactions may create the necessary conditions for hypolithic productivity in Antarctic deserts

    Analog of Astrophysical Magnetorotational Instability in a Couette-Taylor Flow of Polymer Fluids

    We report experimental observation of an instability in a Couette-Taylor flow of a polymer fluid in a thin gap between two coaxially rotating cylinders in a regime where their angular velocity decreases with the radius while the specific angular momentum increases with the radius. In the considered regime, neither the inertial Rayleigh instability nor the purely elastic instability are possible. We propose that the observed "elasto-rotational" instability is an analog of the magnetorotational instability which plays a fundamental role in astrophysical Keplerian accretion disks.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
