Characteristics of Magnetohydrodynamic Oscillations Observed with Michelson Doppler Imager
We report on the spatial distribution of magnetogram oscillatory power and
phase angles between velocity and magnetogram signals as observed with the
Michelson Doppler Imager. The dataset is 151.25 arcsec times 151.25 arcsec
containing sunspot from Dec 2, 1997 with a temporal sampling interval of 60
seconds and spatial sampling of 0.605 arcsec. Simultaneously observed continuum
intensity and surface velocity accompany the magnetic information. We focus on
three frequency regimes: 0.5-1.0, 3.0-3.5 and 5.5-6.0 mHz corresponding roughly
to timescales of magnetic evolution, p-modes and the 3 minute resonant sunspot
oscillation. Significant low frequency magnetogram power is found in lower flux
pixels, 100-300 Gauss, in a striking ring with filamentary structure
surrounding sunspot. Five minute magnetogram power peaks in extended regions of
flux 600-800 Gauss. The 3 minute oscillation is observed in sunspot umbra in
pixels whose flux measures 1300-1500 Gauss. Phase angles of approximately -90
degrees between velocity and magnetic flux in the 3.0-3.5 and 5.5-6.0 mHz
regimes are found in regions of significant cross amplitude.Comment: 4 Pages, 4 Figures -- For better Figure files see:

Measuring the Solar Radius from Space during the 2003 and 2006 Mercury Transits
The Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric
Observatory observed the transits of Mercury on 2003 May 7 and 2006 November 8.
Contact times between Mercury and the solar limb have been used since the 17th
century to derive the Sun's size but this is the first time that high-quality
imagery from space, above the Earth's atmosphere, has been available. Unlike
other measurements this technique is largely independent of optical distortion.
The true solar radius is still a matter of debate in the literature as measured
differences of several tenths of an arcsecond (i.e., about 500 km) are
apparent. This is due mainly to systematic errors from different instruments
and observers since the claimed uncertainties for a single instrument are
typically an order of magnitude smaller. From the MDI transit data we find the
solar radius to be 960".12 +/- 0".09 (696,342 +/- 65 km). This value is
consistent between the transits and consistent between different MDI focus
settings after accounting for systematic effects.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (2012 March 5
Extension Programming for Food Entrepreneurs: An Indiana Needs Assessment
The objective of the research reported here was to identify the needs of food entrepreneurs in the state of Indiana. To attain this objective, Purdue Extension educators from 86 counties in Indiana were surveyed. Topics of interest from the survey results included marketing, new business start-up, food regulations, and food safety. This assessment tool has directed Purdue Extension in developing a Food Entrepreneur Engagement Program. The survey results were used to develop a statewide workshop for food entrepreneurs. Resources provided by this program ultimately helped several food entrepreneurs create value-added food businesses in Indiana
Computing the entropy of user navigation in the web
Navigation through the web, colloquially known as "surfing", is one of the main activities of users during web interaction. When users follow a navigation trail they often tend to get disoriented in terms of the goals of their original query and thus the discovery of typical user trails could be useful in providing navigation assistance. Herein, we give a theoretical underpinning of user navigation in terms of the entropy of an underlying Markov chain modelling the web topology. We present a novel method for online incremental computation of the entropy and a large deviation result regarding the length of a trail to realize the said entropy. We provide an error analysis for our estimation of the entropy in terms of the divergence between the empirical and actual probabilities. We then indicate applications of our algorithm in the area of web data mining. Finally, we present an extension of our technique to higher-order Markov chains by a suitable reduction of a higher-order Markov chain model to a first-order one
Chaotic and pseudochaotic attractors of perturbed fractional oscillator
We consider a nonlinear oscillator with fractional derivative of the order
alpha. Perturbed by a periodic force, the system exhibits chaotic motion called
fractional chaotic attractor (FCA). The FCA is compared to the ``regular''
chaotic attractor. The properties of the FCA are discussed and the
``pseudochaotic'' case is demonstrated.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
GSK-3 in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) regulates multiple cellular processes, and its dysregulation is implicated in the pathogenesis of diverse diseases. In this paper we will focus on the dysfunction of GSK-3 in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Specifically, GSK-3 is known to interact with tau, β-amyloid (Aβ), and α-synuclein, and as such may be crucially involved in both diseases. Aβ production, for example, is regulated by GSK-3, and its toxicity is mediated by GSK-induced tau phosphorylation and degeneration. α-synuclein is a substrate for GSK-3 and GSK-3 inhibition protects against Parkinsonian toxins. Lithium, a GSK-3 inhibitor, has also been shown to affect tau, Aβ, and α-synuclein in cell culture, and transgenic animal models. Thus, understanding the role of GSK-3 in neurodegenerative diseases will enhance our understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of these disorders and also facilitate the identification of new therapeutic avenues
