Strange bedfellows? Keyword and conceptual search unite to make sense of relevant ESI in electronic discovery
In the brief history of electronic discovery, the latter part of the twentieth century witnessed the
demise of paper by a digital hero that emancipated the content of paper documents with OCR
and TIFF. This technology added a third dimension to the realm of 2D paper document review
and production that lead to a sea change in discovery methods. By many accounts what we have
before us is a three-stage evolution from paper to digital to clustering in order to overcome the
problems of volume and complexity of ESI. The intent of this position paper is to describe the
development of the digital hero and methodology that is emancipating the content and context of
ESI – conceptual search that spans file formats, languages and technique, and includes keyword
search on a common, shared index
Computer program for calculating water and steam properties
Computer subprogram, WASP, accepts any two of pressure, temperature, and density as input conditions. Pressure and either entropy or enthalpy are also allowable input variables. This flexibility is especially useful in cycle analysis. Metastable calculations can also be made using WASP
Numerical analysis of deep-seated mass movements in the Magura Nappe; Flysch Belt of the Western Carpathians (Czech Republic)
Deep-seated slope failures are common features in the mountains of the Raca Unit, Magura Nappe of the Flysch Belt of Western Carpathians. Since they represent very complicated system, understanding of their evolution and triggers still remains unclear. We tried to provide a back-analysis of their development by using a finite difference code (FDM) of continua (Flac 4.0). We confirmed that such large mass movements could be triggered by water saturation of the bedrock in the three particular geological and geomorphic settings. Such situation could have been caused by heavy rainfalls in humid phases of the Holocene or permafrost melting in Late Glacial. The effects of faulting, very deep weathering of the bedrock, low geotechnical parameters of smectite-rich material and the local slope geometry have also been accounted for in numerical models, as well as the other triggering factors of slope instability. FDM modelled shear zones are in agreement with observations

Structure and dynamics of deep-seated slope failures in the Magura Flysch Nappe, outer Western Carpathians (Czech Republic)
International audienceDeep-seated mass movements currently comprise one of the main morphogenetic processes in the Flysch Belt of the Western Carpathians of Central Europe. These mass movements result in a large spectrum of slope failures, depending on the type of movement and the nature of the bedrock. This paper presents the results of a detailed survey and reconstruction of three distinct deep-seated slope failures in the Raca Unit of the Magura Nappe, Flysch Belt of the Western Carpathians in the Czech Republic. An interdisciplinary approach has enabled a global view of the dynamics and development of these deep-seated slope failures. The three cases considered here have revealed a complex, poly-phase development of slope failure. They are deep-seated ones with depths to the failure surface ranging from 50 to 110m. They differ in mechanism of movement, failure structure, current activity, and total displacement. The main factors influencing their development have been flysch-bedrock structure, lithology, faulting by bedrock separation (which enabled further weakening through deep weathering), geomorphic setting, swelling of smectite-rich clays, and finally heavy rainfall. All of the slope failures considered here seem to have originated during humid phases of the Holocene or during the Late Glacial
Sex differences in eye gaze and symbolic cueing of attention
Observing a face with averted eyes results in a reflexive shift of attention to the gazed-at location. Here we present results that show that this effect is weaker in males than in females (Experiment 1). This result is predicted by the ‘extreme male brain’ theory of autism (Baron-Cohen, 2003), which suggests that males in the normal population should display more autism-like traits than females (e.g., poor joint attention). Indeed, participants′ scores on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Stott, Bolton, & Goodyear, 2001) negatively correlated with cueing magnitude. Furthermore, exogenous orienting did not differ between the sexes in two peripheral cueing experiments (Experiments 2a and 2b). However, a final experiment showed that using non-predictive arrows instead of eyes as a central cue also revealed a large gender difference. This demonstrates that reduced orienting from central cues in males generalizes beyond gaze cues. These results show that while peripheral cueing is equivalent in the male and female brains, the attention systems of the two sexes treat noninformative symbolic cues very differently
A Physical Model for SN 2001ay, a normal, bright, extremely slowly declining Type Ia supernova
We present a study of the peculiar Type Ia supernova 2001ay (SN 2001ay). The
defining features of its peculiarity are: high velocity, broad lines, and a
fast rising light curve, combined with the slowest known rate of decline. It is
one magnitude dimmer than would be predicted from its observed value of
Delta-m15, and shows broad spectral features. We base our analysis on detailed
calculations for the explosion, light curves, and spectra. We demonstrate that
consistency is key for both validating the models and probing the underlying
physics. We show that this SN can be understood within the physics underlying
the Delta-m15 relation, and in the framework of pulsating delayed detonation
models originating from a Chandrasekhar mass, white dwarf, but with a
progenitor core composed of 80% carbon. We suggest a possible scenario for
stellar evolution which leads to such a progenitor. We show that the unusual
light curve decline can be understood with the same physics as has been used to
understand the Delta-m15 relation for normal SNe Ia. The decline relation can
be explained by a combination of the temperature dependence of the opacity and
excess or deficit of the peak luminosity, alpha, measured relative to the
instantaneous rate of radiative decay energy generation. What differentiates SN
2001ay from normal SNe Ia is a higher explosion energy which leads to a shift
of the Ni56 distribution towards higher velocity and alpha < 1. This result is
responsible for the fast rise and slow decline. We define a class of SN

Seedless x seedless grape progeny: Technique, results and perspectives
Recent refinements in the in vitro embryo rescue technique employed to raise progenies from abortive ovules of seedless x seedless cultivars include addition of 0.2 ppm NAA (naphtaleneacetic acid) to the medium, inducing highly improved root systems and faster plant development. Selling seedless Vitis vinifera yielded seedless progeny only. Open pollinated Perlette and Flame Seedless gave rise to a high percentage (75 and 87%, respectively) of seedless progeny. Progeny from various crosses between seedless cultivars segregated into 65 normal seeded and 204 seedless. From the totality of 204 seedless progeny 192 bore fruit with very slight seed traces. Progeny from crosses between seeded and seedless segregated only 7.5-8% individuals with comparably slight seed traces, amounting to 1/3 of the progeny rated as seedless. Fresh weight determinations of aborted seeds per berry showed a pronouncedly lower weight in progenies from seedless x seedless crosses. Reduction in average berry size in the seedless fraction of seedless x seedless progenies compared to midparent values was of a similar order of magnitude as that obtained in seedless progeny derived from seeded x seedless crosses
