Reinvestigating the Relationship between Information Technology Capability and Firm Performance: Focusing On the Impact of the Adoption of Enterprise Systems

    Get PDF
Though many information systems researchers have made various attempts to investigate the relationship between information technology capability and firm performance from diverse perspectives, we have not come to a conclusion yet with some mixed results. In this research, focusing on the adoption of Enterprise Resource Planning systems by firms as a proxy measure of information technology capability, we re-examine whether the association is positive or negative. With the sample of Korean firms which have adopted Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in 2009, we match ERP adopters and non-adopters with propensity score matching, and compare financial performance between them with difference-in-difference estimation between pre- and post-adoption period. According to our analysis, we find out that there is no positive and significant relationship between information technology capability and firm performance in profit ratios. This research shows that contrary to the era of propriety information systems, standardized information systems make no more competitive advantages against competitors these days

The Impact of Youtube on International Trade

Many researchers in the field of international business have argued that cultural proximity can positively influence bilateral trade. These researchers have attempted to develop proxy measures for cultural proximity, such as language, ethnicity, religion, and trade of cultural goods. However, the conventional measures failed to capture the time-variant characteristics of cultural affinity or digitization in international trade. As an alternative approach, in this study, we focused on cultural affinity in social media like YouTube. Based on the recent popularity of Korean pop (K-pop) on YouTube, we hypothesized that online consumption of K-pop content creates an affinity for Korea as a country, resulting in higher Korean exports. We used panel data analysis for YouTube comments on K-pop music videos that were published from the second quarter of 2009 to the third quarter of 2012; these comments were segregated on the basis of the usersā€™ home countries. We found that the YouTube comments of each country in the current and previous quarters are significant predictors of Koreaā€™s total exports and exports of consumer goods such as processed food, clothes, and cosmetics to that particular country

Based on Rogersā€™s innovation diffusion model, we investigate how electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) through different types of social media impacts movie sales across the different phases of movie screening. We collected eWOM information on movies from February to October 2012 from Twitter, Yahoo!Movies, YouTube, and blogs on a daily basis. The results indicate that Twitter is relatively influential on movie revenue in the initial stage of opening because of its mass media characteristic. On the other hand, Yahoo!Movies and blogs are relatively influential on movie revenue in the late stages of opening because of their interpersonal communication characteristics. Since YouTube contains both characteristics of mass media and interpersonal communication, we determine that there is no difference in the impact of YouTube on movie revenue between the initial and late stages of opening

How people perceive malicious comments differently: factors influencing the perception of maliciousness in online news comments

    Get PDF
This study proposes a comprehensive model to investigate the factors that influence the perceived maliciousness of online news comments. The study specifically examines individual factors, including demographic characteristics (e.g., gender and age), personality traits (e.g., empathy and attitudes toward online news comments), and reading-related factors (e.g., the amount of news comment reading). Contextual factors such as issue involvement, perceived peer behavior, and the presence of malicious comments in news articles are also considered. The results suggest that most of the proposed variables have a significant impact on the perceived maliciousness of online news comments, except for morality and issue involvement. The findings have important theoretical implications for research on malicious online news comments and provide practical guidelines for online news platforms on how to reduce malicious comments by visualizing them alongside other news comments

Video-on-demand (VOD) service providers face the challenge of making strategic decisions regarding the allocation of movies to specific pricing plan libraries. This study delves into the cannibalization effect that occurs when a movie transitions from the transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) library to the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) library. We conducted a comprehensive analysis using user purchasing and viewing data for 1541 movies offered by SK Broadband, South Korea's leading VOD service provider. Our analysis employed propensity score matching and difference-in-difference methodologies. The results of our initial analysis reveal that allocating movies to SVOD leads to an 192% increase in the number of views while simultaneously 52% decreasing TVOD sales. Additionally, we investigate the characteristics of movies that are particularly effective for SVOD servicing. To accomplish this, we scrutinized 236 movies available in SK Broadband's SVOD service using a cost-effectiveness analysis. Our second analysis demonstrates that certain categories of movies, including foreign films, non-G-rated movies, animations, and films not allowed as Download-To-Own (DTO), are more suitable for allocation to SVOD libraries. Furthermore, movies with lower box office viewership numbers exhibit greater success when allocated to SVOD. This study offers insights into the strategic considerations that VOD service providers should embrace, emphasizing a content feature-driven approach to managing pricing plan combinations

Helpfulness of online consumer reviews: readers' objectives and review cues

    No full text
With the growth of e-commerce, online consumer reviews have increasingly become important sources of information that help consumers in their purchase decisions. However, the influx of online consumer reviews has caused information overload, making it difficult for consumers to choose reliable reviews. For an online retail market to succeed, it is important to lead product reviewers to write more helpful reviews, and for consumers to get helpful reviews more easily by figuring out the factors determining the helpfulness of online reviews. For this research, 75,226 online consumer reviews were collected from Amazon.com using a Web data crawler. Additional information on review content was also gathered by carrying out a sentiment analysis for mining review text. Our results show that both peripheral cues, including review rating and reviewer's credibility, and central cues, such as the content of reviews, influence the helpfulness of reviews. Based on dual process theories, we find that consumers focus on different information sources of reviews, depending on their purposes for reading reviews: online reviews can be used for information search or for evaluating alternatives. Our findings provide new perspectives to online market owners on how to manage online reviews on their Web sites

    No full text
With rapid advancements in information and communication technology, open collaboration has become easier, thereby allowing people to participate through internet platform. Open source software is one of the representative examples of open collaboration. In this research, we examine the antecedents of innovation performance for open source software development organizations on Github (www.github.com), which is a leading web service for the open collaborations of developers. From the perspective of resource allocation, this study investigates effective governance strategies to allocate developers to multiple projects within an organization. Overall, we find that the organization with high performance have a small number of developers to participate in most projects and most developers to participate in a small number of projects.OAIID:RECH_ACHV_DSTSH_NO:T201734456RECH_ACHV_FG:RR00200001ADJUST_YN:EMP_ID:A076372CITE_RATE:4.516FILENAME:IJIM_2017.pdfDEPT_NM:ź²½ģ˜ķ•™ź³¼EMAIL:[email protected]_YN:YFILEURL:https://srnd.snu.ac.kr/eXrepEIR/fws/file/0831e518-0ce8-4ff5-afdf-fdc9e654da5a/linkN

GADD45Ī² Regulates Hepatic Gluconeogenesis via Modulating the Protein Stability of FoxO1

    No full text
Increased hepatic gluconeogenesis is one of the main contributors to the development of type 2 diabetes. Recently, it has been reported that growth arrest and DNA damage-inducible 45 beta (GADD45β) is induced under both fasting and high-fat diet (HFD) conditions that stimulate hepatic gluconeogenesis. Here, this study aimed to establish the molecular mechanisms underlying the novel role of GADD45β in hepatic gluconeogenesis. Both whole-body knockout (KO) mice and adenovirus-mediated knockdown (KD) mice of GADD45β exhibited decreased hepatic gluconeogenic gene expression concomitant with reduced blood glucose levels under fasting and HFD conditions, but showed a more pronounced effect in GADD45β KD mice. Further, in primary hepatocytes, GADD45β KD reduced glucose output, whereas GADD45β overexpression increased it. Mechanistically, GADD45β did not affect Akt-mediated forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1) phosphorylation and forskolin-induced cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation. Rather it increased FoxO1 transcriptional activity via enhanced protein stability of FoxO1. Further, GADD45β colocalized and physically interacted with FoxO1. Additionally, GADD45β deficiency potentiated insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic gluconeogenic genes, and it were impeded by the restoration of GADD45β expression. Our finding demonstrates GADD45β as a novel and essential regulator of hepatic gluconeogenesis. It will provide a deeper understanding of the FoxO1-mediated gluconeogenesis
