    Normal versus anomalous self-diffusion in two-dimensional fluids: Memory function approach and generalized asymptotic Einstein relation

    Based on the generalized Langevin equation for the momentum of a Brownian particle a generalized asymptotic Einstein relation is derived. It agrees with the well-known Einstein relation in the case of normal diffusion but continues to hold for sub- and super-diffusive spreading of the Brownian particle's mean square displacement. The generalized asymptotic Einstein relation is used to analyze data obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of a two-dimensional soft disk fluid. We mainly concentrated on medium densities for which we found super-diffusive behavior of a tagged fluid particle. At higher densities a range of normal diffusion can be identified. The motion presumably changes to sub-diffusion for even higher densities

    Labisia pumila extract protects skin cells from photoaging caused by UVB irradiation

    Labisia pumila (Myrsinaceae), known as "Kacip Fatimah," has been used by many generations of Malay women to induce and facilitate child birth as well as a post partum medicine. However, its topical application on skin has not been reported yet. In this study, we have focused on the anti-photoaging effects of L. pumila. Extract of L. pumila was first analyzed for their antioxidant activities using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) since UV irradiation is a primary cause of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the skin. The 50% free radical scavenging activity (FSC(50)) of L. pumila extract was determined to be 0.006%, which was equal to that produced by 156 microM ascorbic acid. TNF-alpha and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) play a primary role in the inflammation process upon UV irradiation and are known to be stimulated by UVB. Treatment with L. pumila extract markedly inhibited the TNF-alpha production and the expression of COX-2. Decreased collagen synthesis of human fibroblasts by UVB was restored back to normal level after treatment with L. pumila extract. On the other hand, the enhanced MMP-1 expression upon UVB irradiation was down regulated by L. pumila extract in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, treatment of normal keratinocytes with L. pumila extract attenuated UVB-induced MMP-9 expression. These results collectively suggest L. pumila extract has tremendous potential as an anti-photoaging cosmetic ingredient

    BOgen: Generating Part-Level 3D Designs Based on User Intention Inference through Bayesian Optimization and Variational Autoencoder

    Advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have introduced various AI models capable of producing impressive visual design outputs. However, when it comes to AI models in the design process, prioritizing outputs that align with designers' needs over mere visual craftsmanship becomes even more crucial. Furthermore, designers often intricately combine parts of various designs to create novel designs. The ability to generate designs that align with the designers' intentions at the part level is pivotal for assisting designers. Hence, we introduced BOgen, which empowers designers to proactively generate and explore part-level designs through Bayesian optimization and variational autoencoders, thereby enhancing their overall user experience. We assessed BOgen's performance using a study involving 30 designers. The results revealed that, compared to the baseline, BOgen fulfilled the designer requirements for part recommendations and design exploration space guidance. BOgen assists designers in navigation and development, offering valuable design suggestions and fosters proactive design exploration and creation.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figure

    A Compact Optical Six-Axis Force/Torque Sensor for Legged Robots Using a Polymorphic Calibration Method

    This paper presents a novel design for a compact, lightweight 6-axis force/torque sensor intended for use in legged robots. The design promotes easy manufacturing and cost reduction, while introducing innovative calibration methods that simplify the calibration process and minimize effort. The sensor's advantages are achieved by streamlining the structure for durability, implementing noncontact sensors, and providing a wider sensing range compared to commercial sensors. To maintain a simple structure, the paper proposes a force sensing scheme using photocouplers where the sensing elements are aligned in-plane. This strategy enables all sensing elements to be fabricated on a single printed circuit board, eliminating manual labor tasks such as bonding and coating the sensing elements. The prototype sensor contains only four parts, costs less than $250, and exhibits high response frequency and performance. Traditional calibration methods present challenges, such as the need for specialized equipment and extensive labor. To facilitate easy calibration without the need for specialized equipment, a new method using optimal control is proposed. To verify the feasibility of these ideas, a prototype six-axis F/T sensor was manufactured.     Development of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Based Biosensor for the Detection of Staphylococcus aureus

    The goal of this research is to develop a single-walled carbon nanotube- (SWCNT-) based biosensor to detect Staphylococcus aureus. The specificity of 11 bacteria and polyclonal anti-Staphylococcus aureus antibodies (pAbs) was determined using an indirect ELISA. The pAbs were immobilized onto sensor platform after the hybridization of 1-pyrenebutanoic acid succinimidyl ester (PBASE). The resistance difference (ΔR) was calculated using a potentiostat. The bacteria detected by the biosensor were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The optimum concentration of SWCNTs on the platform was determined to be 0.1 mg/mL. The binding of pAbs with S. aureus resulted in a significant increase in resistance value of the biosensor (P<0.05). The SEM images confirmed the specific binding of S. aureus on the biosensor. The SWCNT-based biosensor was able to detect S. aureus with a limit of detection (LOD) of 4 log⁡CFU/mL

    The promoter -1031(T/C) polymorphism in tumor necrosis factor-alpha associated with polycystic ovary syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A <it>tumor necrosis factor-alpha </it>is a multifunctional pro-inflammation cytokine, which has been considered as one of pathogenic factors for various diseases. The promoter -1031(T/C) polymorphism in the <it>tumor necrosis factor-alpha </it>gene was reported that it plays a part in reproduction-related diseases. Among these, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is known to be a common gynecological disease of women in reproductive age women. Here, we performed a comparative study of -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene with PCOS in a Korean population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in a total of 217 PCOS patients and 144 matched female controls of healthy women. And statistical analysis was performed using HapAnalyzer. <it>X</it><sup>2 </sup>test and logistic regression were utilized analyze the association between two groups. A <it>p</it>-value under 0.05 was considered statistically significant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The genotype and allelic frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). There was strong association between the -1031(T/C) polymorphism in the promoter region of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene and PCOS (<it>p</it>-value = 0.0003, odd ratio (OR) = 2.53). In addition, the frequency of C allele was significantly higher in PCOS patients compared with controls. Sequence analyses also showed the -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This is the first study on the -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene in PCOS. We concluded that the -1031(T/C) polymorphism of <it>TNF-alpha </it>gene is associated with PCOS in a Korean population. Therefore, it is possible that it may be considered as a clinical biomarker to diagnose for PCOS, and is helpful in understanding the etiology for the pathogenesis of PCOS.</p
