Microfluidic device for analyzing preferential chemotaxis and chemoreceptor sensitivity of bacterial cells toward carbon sources
We present a novel microfluidic device that enables high sensitive analyses of the chemotactic response of motile bacterial cells (Escherichia coli) that swim toward a preferred nutrient by sorting and concentrating them. The device consists of the Y-shaped microchannel that has been widely used in chemotaxis studies to attract cells toward a high concentration and a concentrator array integrated with arrowhead-shaped ratchet structures beside the main microchannel to trap and accumulate them. Since the number of accumulated cells in the concentrator array continuously increases with time, the device makes it possible to increase the sensitivity of detecting chemotactic responses of the cells about 10 times greater than Y-shaped channel devices in 60 min. In addition, the device can characterize the relative chemotactic sensitivity of chemoreceptors to chemoeffectors by comparing the number of cells in the concentrator array at different distances from the channel junction. Since the device allows the analysis of both the chemotactic responses and the sensitivity of chemoreceptors with high resolution, we believe that not only can the device be broadly used for various microbial chemotaxis assays but it also can further the advancement of microbiology and even synthetic biology.close9
Characteristics of high efficiency current charging system for HTS magnet with solar energy
AbstractIn terms of electrical energy, the technical fusion with solar energy system is promisingly applied in order to improve the efficiency in the power applications, since the solar energy system can convert an eternal electric energy in all-year-around. As one of such power applications, we proposed a current charging system for HTS magnet combined with solar energy (CHS). As this system can operate without external utility power to charge the HTS load magnet due to the solar energy, the operating efficiency is practically improved. The power converter, which is interfaced with solar energy and HTS magnet systems, plays an important role to transfer the stable electric energy and thus, the stabilized performance of the converter with solar energy system is one of essential factors. In this study, we investigated various charging performances under different operating conditions of the converter. Low Temperature Synthesis of Hexagonal Shaped α
This study demonstrates the low temperature synthesis of α-Al2O3 by solvothermal method using gibbsite alumina precursor in 1, 4-butanediol solvent according to various pH conditions. In acidic solution, an orthorhombic boehmite (AlOOH) structure was obtained after solvothermal reaction. A significant result in this study was that the solvothermally synthesized alumina in pH=9 at 300 °C for 36 h represented a rhombohedral α-Al2O3 structure hexagonal shaped with about 1.5~2.0 μm of particle size. Otherwise, the α-Al2O3 structure was rather changed to the mixture of a boehmite and α-Al2O3 structures above pH=11. In the case of α-Al2O3 synthesized at pH=9, the specific surface area was 26.18 m2/g, and the particles that were stable in acidic solution resulted in 61.80 mV of zeta potential
Effect of coating with combined chitosan and gallic acid on shelf-life stability of Jeju black cattle beef
Objective Beef of Jeju black cattle (JBC) is considered as a healthy meat type due to its significantly higher unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). Lipid (e.g., UFA) is highly susceptible to oxidizing agents, which results in the quality deterioration and economic value loss of meat products. Therefore, development and application of novel preservative techniques is necessary to improve the shelf-life stability of high-UFA beef. The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of chitosan-based coatings in preservation of JBC beef. Methods Different coating solutions: 2% chitosan alone, and 2% chitosan containing 0.1% or 0.3% gallic acid were prepared to investigate their applicability in preservation of fresh beef during storage. Jeju black cattle beef (2-cm thick steaks) were non-coated (control) or coated with the above coating solutions, placed on trays, over-wrapped with plastic film and stored at 4°C. The microbiological indices, color, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) and lipid oxidation of the beef were investigated after 1, 10, and 21 days of storage. Results Coating with 2% chitosan alone reduced the spoilage bacteria count, TVBN and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances levels in the beef compared with control during storage (p<0.05). Noticeably, coating with 2% chitosan containing 0.1% or 0.3% gallic acid was more effective on retardation of spoilage bacteria growth, lipid oxidation and discoloration in the beef compared to the chitosan coating alone over the storage period (21 days) (p<0.05). Conclusion Taken together, the combined chitosan and gallic acid coating could be used as a bio-preservative technique in the meat industry
Erratum: Nation-Wide Korean Breast Cancer Data from 2008 Using the Breast Cancer Registration Program
nation-wide breast cancer data and analyzed the data using their online registration program biannually. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of Korean breast cancer from 2008 and examine chronological based patterns. Methods: Data were collected from 38 medical schools (67 hospitals), 20 general hospitals, and 10 private clinics. The data on the total number, gender, and age distribution were collected through a questionnaire as well as other detailed data analyzed via the online registration program. Results: In 2008, there were 13,908 patients who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer. The crude incidence rate of female breast cancer was 57.3 among 100,000 and the median age was 49 years. The age distribution had not changed since the initial survey; however the proportion of postmenopausal patients had increased and median age was older than the past. In staging distribution, the proportion of early breast cancer (stage 0, I) was 47.2 % with, breast-conserving surgery performed in 58 % and mastectomy in 39.5%. Conclusion: Compared to past data, the incidence of breast cancer in Korea continues to rise. Furthermore, the proportion of those detected by screening and breast conservation surgery has increased remarkably. Development of a Spirometry \u3cem\u3eT\u3c/em\u3e-score in the General Population
Background and objective: Spirometry values may be expressed as T-scores in standard deviation units relative to a reference in a young, normal population as an analogy to the T-score for bone mineral density. This study was performed to develop the spirometry T-score.
Methods: T-scores were calculated from lambda-mu-sigma-derived Z-scores using a young, normal age reference. Three outcomes of all-cause death, respiratory death, and COPD death were evaluated in 9,101 US subjects followed for 10 years; an outcome of COPD-related health care utilization (COPD utilization) was evaluated in 1,894 Korean subjects followed for 4 years.
Results: The probability of all-cause death appeared to remain nearly zero until -1 of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) T-score but increased steeply where FEV1 T-score reached below -2.5. Survival curves for all-cause death, respiratory death, COPD death, and COPD utilization differed significantly among the groups when stratified by FEV1 T-score (P \u3c 0.001). The adjusted hazard ratios of the FEV1 T-score for the four outcomes were 0.54 (95% confidence interval, 0.48–0.60), 0.43 (95% CI: 0.37–0.50), 0.30 (95% CI: 0.24–0.37), and 0.69 (95% CI: 0.59–0.81), respectively, adjusting for covariates (P \u3c 0.001).

Ecologic correlation Study on Nutrients/Foods Intake and Mortal ity for Female Breast Cancer in Korea
In order to investigate the possible role of dieta-ry factors on the
recent increase in mortality for female breast cancer in Korea, an ecologic
correlation study between per capita intakes of nutrients and foods and the
mortality for female breast cancer during the last 10 years was conducted. In
spite of the possibility of an ecologic fallacy, the age-adjusted mortality rates for
female breast cancer were positively correlated with protein from animal source,
total lipid, total animal foods, animal foods to total intake, fresh fish and
shellfish, milk and milk products, and meat and meat products. The rates were
inversely associated with energy from cereal, total carbohydrate, vegetable foods
to total intake, total vegetable foods, daily intake of cereals and grain products,
and starch and starch roots. These results suggest that an increased intake of
protein- and fat-rich foods rather than carbohydrate-rich foods or vegetables
might be associated with the increase in mortality for breast cancer during the
last 10 years in Korea
