Smart Roadside System for Driver Assistance and Safety Warnings: Framework and Applications

    Get PDF
The use of newly emerging sensor technologies in traditional roadway systems can provide real-time traffic services to drivers through Telematics and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITSs). This paper introduces a smart roadside system that utilizes various sensors for driver assistance and traffic safety warnings. This paper shows two road application models for a smart roadside system and sensors: a red-light violation warning system for signalized intersections, and a speed advisory system for highways. Evaluation results for the two services are then shown using a micro-simulation method. In the given real-time applications for drivers, the framework and certain algorithms produce a very efficient solution with respect to the roadway type features and sensor type use

We investigated the effect of DWac on the gut microbiota composition in mice with 2,3,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid- (TNBS-) induced colitis. Treatment with DWac restored TNBS-disturbed gut microbiota composition and attenuated TNBS-induced colitis. Moreover, we examined the effect of DWac in mice with mesalazine-resistant colitis (MRC). Intrarectal injection of TNBS in MRC mice caused severe colitis, as well as colon shortening, edema, and increased myeloperoxidase activity. Treatment with mesalazine (30ā€‰mg/kg) did not attenuate TNBS-induced colitis in MRC mice, whereas treatment with DWac (30ā€‰mg/kg) significantly attenuated TNBS-induced colitis. Moreover, treatment with the mixture of mesalazine (15ā€‰mg/kg) and DWac (15ā€‰mg/kg) additively attenuated colitis in MRC mice. Treatment with DWac and its mixture with mesalazine inhibited TNBS-induced activation of NF-ĪŗB and expression of M1 macrophage markers but increased TNBS-suppressed expression of M2 macrophage markers. Furthermore, these inhibited TNBS-induced T-bet, RORĪ³t, TNF-Ī±, and IL-17 expression but increased TNBS-suppressed Foxp3 and IL-10 expression. However, Th2 cell differentiation and GATA3 and IL-5 expression were not affected. These findings suggest that DWac can ameliorate MRC by increasing the polarization of M2 macrophage and correcting the disturbance of gut microbiota and Th1/Th17/Treg, as well as additively attenuating MRC along with mesalazine

PPM1A Controls Diabetic Gene Programming through Directly Dephosphorylating PPAR?? at Ser273

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) is a master regulator of adipose tissue biology. In obesity, phosphorylation of PPAR gamma at Ser273 (pSer273) by cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) orchestrates diabetic gene reprogramming via dysregulation of specific gene expression. Although many recent studies have focused on the development of non-classical agonist drugs that inhibit the phosphorylation of PPAR gamma at Ser273, the molecular mechanism of PPAR gamma dephosphorylation at Ser273 is not well characterized. Here, we report that protein phosphatase Mg2+/Mn2+-dependent 1A (PPM1A) is a novel PPAR gamma phosphatase that directly dephosphorylates Ser273 and restores diabetic gene expression which is dysregulated by pSer273. The expression of PPM1A significantly decreases in two models of insulin resistance: diet-induced obese (DIO) mice and db/db mice, in which it negatively correlates with pSer273. Transcriptomic analysis using microarray and genotype-tissue expression (GTEx) data in humans shows positive correlations between PPM1A and most of the genes that are dysregulated by pSer273. These findings suggest that PPM1A dephosphorylates PPAR gamma at Ser273 and represents a potential target for the treatment of obesity-linked metabolic disorders

ā€˜Evidence of an auxin signal pathway, microRNA167-ARF8-GH3, and its response to exogenous auxin in cultured rice cellsā€™

    Get PDF
MicroRNA167 (miR167) was shown to cleave auxin responsive factor 8 (ARF8) mRNA in cultured rice cells. MiR167 level was found to be controlled by the presence of auxin in the growth medium. When cells grew in auxin-free medium, miR167 level decreased, resulting in an increase in the level of ARF8 mRNA. Cells growing in the normal growth medium containing auxin showed a reversed trend. It was also shown that expression of OsGH3-2, an rice IAA-conjugating enzyme, was positively regulated by ARF8. Delivery of synthesized miR167 into cells led to decrease of both ARF8 mRNA and OsGH3-2 mRNA. This study provides an evidence in which the exogeneous auxin signal is transduced to OsGH3-2 through miR167 and ARF8 in sequence. This proposed auxin signal transduction pathway, auxin-miR167-ARF8-OsGH3-2, could be, in conjunction with the other microRNA-mediated auxin signals, an important one for responding to exogeneous auxin and for determining the cellular free auxin level which guides appropriate auxin responses

Monitoring of multi-frequency polarization of gamma-ray bright AGNs

We started two observing programs with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) monitoring changes in the flux density and polarization of relativistic jets in gamma-ray bright AGNs simultaneously at 22, 43, 86, 129 GHz. One is a single-dish weekly-observing program in dual polarization with KVN 21-m diameter radio telescopes beginning in 2011 May. The other is a VLBI monthly-observing program with the three-element VLBI network at an angular resolution range of 1.0--9.2 mas beginning in 2012 December. The monitoring observations aim to study correlation of variability in gamma-ray with that in radio flux density and polarization of relativistic jets when they flare up. These observations enable us to study the origin of the gamma-ray flares of AGNs.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of the conference "The innermost regions of relativistic jets and their magnetic fields", Granada, Spai

Emotion regulation from a virtue perspective

    Get PDF
Background The ability to regulate oneā€™s emotional state is an important predictor of several behaviors such as reframing a challenging situation to reduce anger or anxiety, concealing visible signs of sadness or fear, or focusing on reasons to feel happy or calm. This capacity is referred to as emotion regulation. Deficits in this ability can adversely affect oneā€™s adaptive coping, thus are associated with a variety of other psychopathological symptoms, including but not limited to depression, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and somatoform disorders. Methods The present study examined emotion regulation in relation to the virtue-based psychosocial adaptation model (V-PAM). 595 participants were clustered based on their Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) score, producing two clusters (i.e., high functioning vs. low functioning). Then, emotion regulation group membership was discriminated by using five V-PAM virtue constructs, including courage, integrity, practical wisdom, committed action, and emotional transcendence. Results Results show that five virtues contribute to differentiating group membership. Practical wisdom was the strongest contributor, followed by integrity, emotional transcendence, committed action, and courage. Predictive discriminant analysis was conducted and 71% of cases were correctly classified. A discussion of the relationship between emotion regulation and virtues was elaborated. Conclusion The concept of virtue holds significant importance in the comprehension of an individualā€™s capacity to regulate their emotions, meriting future study. Itch is a common skin symptom, with complex aetiology and pathogenesis. It is mediated by 2 pathways, the histaminergic and non-histaminergic pathways. Chronic itch is understood to be processed by the latter and is difficult to treat with traditional pruritus therapies. The Janus kinase and signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway is a signalling mechanism that regulates gene expression through various cytokines. Janus kinase inhibitors, which have been tested and used for several autoimmune diseases, have also been shown to be effective for itch through clinical trials and case reports. Janus kinase inhibitors could be a good choice for pruritus in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and other diseases, such as prurigo nodularis and lichen planus, with rapid itch relief compared with conventional treatments. The most common adverse effects reported include nasopharyngitis, acne, and elevated blood creatine phosphokinase levels. Janus kinase inhibitors are currently prescribed with warnings about a potential increase in malignancies and cardiovascular diseases and usage in people of older ages. This review aims to provide knowledge about itch and the Janus kinase and signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway and to analyse the current evidence for itch relief by Janus kinase inhibitors

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe our initial clinical experience and assess the feasibility of laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) in the treatment of benign adrenal adenoma. Patients and Methods: Nine patients undergoing LESS adrenalectomy for benign adrenal adenoma were compared with 17 patients undergoing conventional laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Controls were matched for age, sex, surgical indications, and tumor size via a statistically generated selection of all conventional laparoscopic adrenalectomies performed during the same period of time. Results: No significant differences in the mean operative time (169 vs. 144.5 minutes, p = 0.287), blood loss (177.8 vs. 204.7 mL, p = 0.792), and postoperative hospital stay (3.2 vs. 3.5 days, p = 0.525) were observed between the LESS and conventional laparoscopy group. However, postoperative pain, as measured by the number of days of intravenous (IV) patient controlled anesthesia use, was significantly lower in the LESS group (0.9 vs. 1.9 days, p = 0.047). Perioperative complications were similar between the two groups. Conclusions: LESS adrenalectomy for benign adrenal adenoma is comparable to the conventional laparoscopic approach with regard to the operative time, blood loss, length of hospital stay, and degree of complication, and has demonstrated more desirable cosmetic outcomes.Raman JD, 2009, EUR UROL, V55, P1198, DOI 10.1016/j.eururo.2008.08.019Park YH, 2009, J ENDOUROL, V23, P833, DOI 10.1089/end.2009.0025Irwin BH, 2009, UROL CLIN N AM, V36, P223, DOI 10.1016/j.ucl.2009.02.011Tracy CR, 2008, NAT CLIN PRACT UROL, V5, P561, DOI 10.1038/ncpuro1215Melman L, 2008, SURG CLIN N AM, V88, P1033, DOI 10.1016/j.suc.2008.05.010Parnaby CN, 2008, SURG ENDOSC, V22, P617, DOI 10.1007/s00464-007-9709-7Tsuru N, 2005, J ENDOUROL, V19, P537Smith CD, 1999, WORLD J SURG, V23, P389Hansen P, 1997, ENDOSCOPY, V29, P309GAGNER M, 1992, NEW ENGL J MED, V327, P10332
