    Frustrated two-dimensional Josephson junction array near incommensurability

    To study the properties of frustrated two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays near incommensurability, we examine the current-voltage characteristics of a square proximity-coupled Josephson junction array at a sequence of frustrations f=3/8, 8/21, 0.382 ((35)/2)(\approx (3-\sqrt{5})/2), 2/5, and 5/12. Detailed scaling analyses of the current-voltage characteristics reveal approximately universal scaling behaviors for f=3/8, 8/21, 0.382, and 2/5. The approximately universal scaling behaviors and high superconducting transition temperatures indicate that both the nature of the superconducting transition and the vortex configuration near the transition at the high-order rational frustrations f=3/8, 8/21, and 0.382 are similar to those at the nearby simple frustration f=2/5. This finding suggests that the behaviors of Josephson junction arrays in the wide range of frustrations might be understood from those of a few simple rational frustrations.Comment: RevTex4, 4 pages, 4 eps figures, to appear in Phys.     New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele

    Selective Exposure to Berita Harian Online and Utusan Malaysia Online: The Roles of Surveillance Motivation, Website Usability and Website Attractiveness

    News media allows audiences to be selective in determining both their news sources and type of news stories they read. This study examined factors influencing selective exposure to the online editions of two mainstream Malaysian newspapers, Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia. Using selective exposure theory as the theoretical lens, this study compared both newspapers in terms of their audiences’ level of surveillance motivation, and how audiences rate the newspapers’ websites with respect to usability and attractiveness. This study used a within-subject experimental research design that exposed 51 subjects to both Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia online newspapers. The results of the experiment indicate that Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia online were significantly different in terms of website usability; however, no significant differences were found in terms of surveillance motivation or website attractiveness between the two newspapers. Further analysis indicate that the only significant predictor of selective exposure was website usability. This study highlights the importance of website usability for online newspapers wanting to harness audience selectivity

    Carbon isotopic enrichment factors (epsilon(c)) measured during cometabolic biodegradation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) by Pseudonocardia tetrahydrofuranoxydans strain K1 were -2.3 +/- 0.2 parts per thousand, -1.7 +/- 0.2 parts per thousand, and -1.7 0.3 parts per thousand, respectively. The measured carbon apparent kinetic isotope effect was 1.01 for all compounds, consistent with the expected kinetic isotope effects for both oxidation of the methoxy(or ethoxy) group and enzymatic S(N)1 biodegradation mechanisms. Significantly, delta C-13 measurements of the tert-butyl alcohol and tert-amyl alcohol products indicated that the tert-butyl and tert-amyl groups do not participate in the reaction and confirmed that ether biodegradation by strain K1 involves oxidation of the methoxy (or ethoxy) group. Measured hydrogen isotopic enrichment factors (CH) were -100 +/- 10 parts per thousand, -73 +/- 7 parts per thousand, and -72 +/- 2 parts per thousand for MTBE, ETBE, and TAME respectively. Previous results reported for aerobic biodegradation of MTBE by Methylibium petroleiphilum PM1 and Methylibium R8 showed smaller EH values (-35 parts per thousand and -42 parts per thousand, respectively. Plots of Delta H-2/Delta C-13 show different slopes for strain K1 compared with strains PM1 and 138, suggesting that different mechanisms are utilized by K1 and PM1/R8 during aerobic MTBE biodegradation
