    Development of a solar-powered residential air conditioner: System optimization preliminary specification

    Investigations aimed at the optimization of a baseline Rankine cycle solar powered air conditioner and the development of a preliminary system specification were conducted. Efforts encompassed the following: (1) investigations of the use of recuperators/regenerators to enhance the performance of the baseline system, (2) development of an off-design computer program for system performance prediction, (3) optimization of the turbocompressor design to cover a broad range of conditions and permit operation at low heat source water temperatures, (4) generation of parametric data describing system performance (COP and capacity), (5) development and evaluation of candidate system augmentation concepts and selection of the optimum approach, (6) generation of auxiliary power requirement data, (7) development of a complete solar collector-thermal storage-air conditioner computer program, (8) evaluation of the baseline Rankine air conditioner over a five day period simulating the NASA solar house operation, and (9) evaluation of the air conditioner as a heat pump

    The sorbent behavior of solid amine resin IR-45 with regard to potential use in regenerative CO2-removal systems for manned spacecraft is considered. Measurements of equilibrium sorption capacity of IR-45 for water and for CO2 are reported, and the dynamic mass transfer behavior of IR-45 beds is studied under conditions representative of those expected in a manned spacecraft. A digital computer program was written for the transient performance prediction of CO2 removal systems comprised of solid amine beds. Also evaluated are systems employing inorganic molecular-sieve sorbents. Tests show that there is definitely an effect of water loading on the absorption rate

The proof is obtained by exploiting two geometric structures at general points of XX: the affine structure arising from the action variables of the Lagrangian fibration ff and the structure defined by the variety of minimal rational tangents on the Fano manifold XX

    Travelling waves in hyperbolic chemotaxis equations

    Mathematical models of bacterial populations are often written as systems of partial differential equations for the densities of bacteria and concentrations of extracellular (signal) chemicals. This approach has been employed since the seminal work of Keller and Segel in the 1970s [Keller and Segel, J. Theor. Biol., 1971]. The system has been shown to permit travelling wave solutions which correspond to travelling band formation in bacterial colonies, yet only under specific criteria, such as a singularity in the chemotactic sensitivity function as the signal approaches zero. Such a singularity generates infinite macroscopic velocities which are biologically unrealistic. In this paper, we formulate a model that takes into consideration relevant details of the intracellular processes while avoiding the singularity in the chemotactic sensitivity. We prove the global existence of solutions and then show the existence of travelling wave solutions both numerically and analytically

    The infrared conductivity of Nax_xCoO2_2: evidence of gapped states

    We present infrared ab-plane conductivity data for the layered cobaltate Nax_xCoO2_2 at three different doping levels (x=0.25,0.50x=0.25, 0.50, and 0.75). The Drude weight increases monotonically with hole doping, 1x1-x. At the lowest hole doping level xx=0.75 the system resembles the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors with a scattering rate that varies linearly with frequency and temperature and there is an onset of scattering by a bosonic mode at 600 \cm. Two higher hole doped samples (x=0.50x=0.50 and 0.25) show two different-size gaps (110 \cm and 200 \cm, respectively) in the optical conductivities at low temperatures and become insulators. The spectral weights lost in the gap region of 0.50 and 0.25 samples are shifted to prominent peaks at 200 \cm and 800 \cm, respectively. We propose that the two gapped states of the two higher hole doped samples (xx=0.50 and 0.25) are pinned charge ordered states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Leading-twist light cone distribution amplitudes for p-wave heavy quarkonium states

    In this paper, a study of light-cone distribution amplitudes for p-wave heavy quarkonium states are presented. Within the light-front framework, the leading twist light-cone distribution amplitudes, and their relevant decay constants, have some simple relations. These relations can be further simplified when the non-relativistic limit and the wave function as a function of relative momentum |\vec\kappa| are taken into consideration. In addition, the \kappa_\perp integrations in the equations of LCDAs and \xi-moments can be completed analytically when the Gaussian-type wave function is considered. After fixing the parameters that appear in the wave function, the curves and the corresponding decay constants of the LCDAs are plotted and calculated for the charmonium and bottomonium states. The first three \xi-moments of the LCDAs are estimated and are consistent with those of other theoretical approaches.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, some details and one reference added; version to appear in JHE

    Exploring the Physics of Type Ia Supernovae Through the X-ray Spectra of their Remnants

    We present the results of an ongoing project to use the X-ray observations of Type Ia Supernova Remnants to constrain the physical processes involved in Type Ia Supernova explosions. We use the Tycho Supernova Remnant (SN 1572) as a benchmark case, comparing its observed spectrum with models for the X-ray emission from the shocked ejecta generated from different kinds of Type Ia explosions. Both the integrated spectrum of Tycho and the spatial distribution of the Fe and Si emission in the remnant are well reproduced by delayed detonation models with stratified ejecta.     Stoichiometry control of the electronic properties of the LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 heterointerface

    We investigate the effect of the laser parameters of pulsed laser deposition on the film stoichiometry and electronic properties of LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (001) heterostructures. The La/Al ratio in the LaAlO_3 films was varied over a wide range from 0.88 to 1.15, and was found to have a strong effect on the interface conductivity. In particular, the carrier density is modulated over more than two orders of magnitude. The film lattice expansion, caused by cation vacancies, is found to be the important functional parameter. These results can be understood to arise from the variations in the electrostatic boundary conditions, and their resolution, with stoichiometry.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio
