Experimental investigation of an active slat for airfoil load alleviation
This article discusses the utilisation of an active slat concept to reduce turbulence induced fluctuating loads on an airfoil. The performance of the active slat is tested in the wind tunnel under different complex inflows 3 created by an active grid resulting into variations in the angle of attack. Different open loop control strategies are developed to mitigate the load fluctuations on the airfoil. The aerodynamics around the airfoil is changed by actively moving the trailing edge of the slat. It is observed that the active slat concept is able to alleviate load fluctuations on the airfoil for inflow angle fluctuations of different scales
verglichen
Design of an adaptive slat on wind energy rotor blades for wind tunnel investigations
To maximize the power output of wind energy plants, their size has been increased to rotor diameters over 120m and nacelle heights of 120m and more. Even with these dimensions, the plants encounter turbulence and vertical wind gradients from the ground boundary layer, which cause fatigue loads on the rotor blades. Minimizing these loads will help to scale up the blades and to enhance their durability. Morphing slats are proposed to minimize these loads. These slats are equipped with an actively controlled morphing trailing edge.
To prove the working principle, a wind tunnel model is developed consisting of an aerodynamic profile with rectangular planform (measuring 30 cm chord and 80 cm span) and a morphing slat. In span wise direction 4 actuation stations are used to support and deform the slats trailing edge. The slats trailing edge is connected to a kinematics on each station, consisting of a connecting rod and a shaft. The slat leading edge is fixed at the same span wise position. The intermediate regions of these four positions have gaps between the slat and the main profile, which allow an air flow. Once the shaft starts to turn the compliant middle section of the slat deforms and the gap will be closed and opened while the leading edge stays fixed.
This paper deals with the development process of the morphing slat. To ensure the fatigue strength under dynamic deformation the inner contour of the slats middle section will be optimized to reduce the slats strain in deformed state. Also six test slats are manufactured to investigate the strain distribution of the slats skin using an optical image correlation system. Finally the fatigue strength for 1 million oscillations is verified experimentally
EFFECTS OF PIEZCERAMIC ACTUATOR IN QUASISTATIC USE
In the field of smart structures, piezoceramic actuators are
wildly used for vibration reduction and acoustic manipulation of structures. Those applications typically run at frequencies between 10 Hz and 10k Hz. Prominent examples are the piezoceramic actuators implemented in helicopter rotor blades to twist them dynamically for higher harmonic control (HHC) or individual blade control (IBC). Once the actuators are implemented it would be a great benefit to also use them to statically change the blade twist (higher twist for take-off and landing - for higher lift; lower twist for high speed forward flight - for reduced drag).
Staying with this example it can be found that sensing the twist displacement is not an easy task at all (see [1, 2]), so it would be most desirable, to use open loop control. In order to do that, the transfer function has to be known accurately. Unfortunately measurements show that the amplitudes for such very low frequencies behavior behave strongly non linear. This paper presents experimental results investigating the influence of the frequency
on the amplitude - especially going for frequencies in the lower mHz region. A variety of piezoceramic actuators has been investigated: from stacks to patch type, d33 as well as d31 effect actuators. A second focus of this paper is the reaction of piezoceramic actuators on the application of a constant DC voltage. The drift that occurs has to be taken into consideration. A third focus of this paper is the dependency of a displacement output of such an actuator at a constant applied DC voltage on the voltages that the actuator had seen before. This topic is of special mportance for aerodynamically effective surfaces that are driven by piezoceramic actuators and should be analyzed (generation of polars) in static conditions
