Thinking About Funding Federal Retirement Plans

    Get PDF
Most U.S. Federal retirement plans are now fully funded, but since plan assets must legally be invested in Federal securities, fund surpluses are used to reduce overall Federal budget deficits. As a result, current taxpayers are not charged with the cost of future Federal retirement obligations. Nevertheless, Federal rules do require the employing Federal agency to budget for current personnel’s accruing liability of retirement promises. Therefore policy decisions regarding the number of Federal civilian and military personnel and the design of their retirement benefits may be made with a better understanding of the costs

How service learning impacts identity formation and social responsibility in emerging adults

    Get PDF
This qualitative study explores the impact of service learning experiences on identity formation and social responsibility in emerging adult college students. Utilizing purposeful convenience sampling, fourteen college students at a liberal arts college in the northeast were interviewed about their nonprofit volunteer experience. Study results indicated that service learning experience positively impacted the identity formation processes of participants by allowing for identity integration and continuity, exposure to idealized mentors in the field, space for reflection on professional identity, and a deeper understanding of social responsibility. This study has implications for clinical social workers because it offers in-depth insight into the experiences of emerging adults. By understanding and supporting the impact of service learning experiences on emerging adults, we can acknowledge an interdisciplinary dialogue about the fostering of shared values and a commitment to social justice that expands beyond the social work field

The goal is to determine what gratifications are popular among college-aged individuals and how those gratifications change depending on the type of video as well as the content. The research is completed through a series of three small group sessions and an online questionnaire made available through the questions feature on Facebook. Upon examination of the data, it becomes clear that both young men and women in the age demographic targeted by this research seek to spread these videos in order to interact socially online with their friends and potentially provide their friends with humor. Women also showed a higher sense of concern for how spreading a video would affect their reputations than did men
