A Hardy inequality in twisted waveguides
We show that twisting of an infinite straight three-dimensional tube with
non-circular cross-section gives rise to a Hardy-type inequality for the
associated Dirichlet Laplacian. As an application we prove certain stability of
the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in locally and mildly bent tubes.
Namely, it is known that any local bending, no matter how small, generates
eigenvalues below the essential spectrum of the Laplacian in the tubes with
arbitrary cross-sections rotated along a reference curve in an appropriate way.
In the present paper we show that for any other rotation some critical strength
of the bending is needed in order to induce a non-empty discrete spectrum.Comment: LaTeX, 20 page
Nuclear Bar Catalyzed Star Formation: 13^CO, C18^O and Molecular Gas Properties in the Nucleus of Maffei 2
(Abridged) We present resolution maps of CO, its isotopologues, and HCN from
in the center of Maffei 2. The J=1-0 rotational lines of 12^CO, 13^CO, C18^O
and HCN, and the J=2-1 lines of 13^CO and C18^O were observed with the OVRO and
BIMA arrays. The 2-1/1-0 line ratios of the isotopologues constrain the bulk of
the molecular gas to originate in low excitation, subthermal gas. From LVG
modeling, we infer that the central GMCs have n(H_2) ~10^2.75 cm^-3 and T_k ~
30 K. Continuum emission at 3.4 mm, 2.7 mm and 1.4 mm was mapped to determine
the distribution and amount of HII regions and dust. Column densities derived
from C18^O and 1.4 mm dust continuum fluxes indicate the CO conversion factor
in the center of Maffei 2 is lower than Galactic by factors of ~2-4. Gas
morphology and the clear ``parallelogram'' in the Position-Velocity diagram
shows that molecular gas orbits within the potential of a nuclear (~220 pc)
bar. The nuclear bar is distinct from the bar that governs the large scale
morphology of Maffei 2. Giant molecular clouds in the nucleus are nonspherical
and have large linewidths. Dense gas and star formation are concentrated at the
sites of the x_1-x_2 orbit intersections of the nuclear bar, suggesting that
the starburst is dynamically triggered.Comment: 50 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Biogenesis of mitochondrial porin
We review here the present knowledge about the pathway of import and assembly of porin into mitochondria and compare it to those of other mitochondrial proteins. Porin, like all outer mitochondrial membrane proteins studied so far is made as a precursor without a cleavble lsquosignalrsquo sequence; thus targeting information must reside in the mature sequence. At least part of this information appears to be located at the amino-terminal end of the molecule. Transport into mitochondria can occur post-translationally. In a first step, the porin precursor is specifically recognized on the mitochondrial surface by a protease sensitive receptor. In a second step, porin precursor inserts partially into the outer membrane. This step is mediated by a component of the import machinery common to the import pathways of precursor proteins destined for other mitochondrial subcompartments. Finally, porin is assembled to produce the functional oligomeric form of an integral membrane protein wich is characterized by its extreme protease resistance
Measurement and analysis of needle penetration forces in industrial high-speed sewing machine
The industrial manufacturing of sewn products has always been one of the critical processes of the textile chain concerning quality assurance. Assuring the appropriate set-up and operation of all the machines, and thus the final seam quality, is a very complex task. Traditionally, this task is accomplished through empirical methods, with the machine setting and quality control relying on the skills of operators and technicians.
This work presents an approach to a more knowledge-based and integrated process planning and control. A system was developed to measure and analyze the most important mechanical effects occurring during high-speed sewing. The paper will focus mainly on the measurement and evaluation of needle penetration and withdrawal force.
After an overview of the system, the most important experimental results obtained in a series of experiments will be described
Robin conditions on the Euclidean ball
Techniques are presented for calculating directly the scalar functional
determinant on the Euclidean d-ball. General formulae are given for Dirichlet
and Robin boundary conditions. The method involves a large mass asymptotic
limit which is carried out in detail for d=2 and d=4 incidentally producing
some specific summations and identities. Extensive use is made of the
Watson-Kober summation formula.Comment: 36p,JyTex, misprints corrected and a section on the massive case

A rare case of Salmonella Paratyphi C osteomyelitis: A genetic analysis and review of Salmonella osteomyelitis in England.
Salmonella osteomyelitis is rare in patients without sickling hemoglobinopathies. Invasive disease caused by Salmonella Paratyphi C is rarer still with only one case reported in the United Kingdom in the last 15 years. We report a case of relapsing S. Paratyphi C osteomyelitis in a newly diagnosed diabetic patient from Ghana. Our patient was initially treated successfully with surgical debridement followed by 6 weeks of IV ceftriaxone before recrudescence 9 months later. Due to the rarity of S. Paratyphi C and the lack of recent travel, genomic analysis was undertaken to assess possible sources with the closest related strain being from Cote d'Ivoire. The patient had likley picked up the strain several years before presentation. We review current Salmonella osteomyelitis literature and audit all cases referred to the England and Wales Salmonella national reference laboratory over the last 15 years
Vaccine strain affects seroconversion after influenza vaccination in COPD patients and healthy older people
Though clinical guidelines recommend influenza vaccination for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and other high-risk populations, it is unclear whether current vaccination strategies induce optimal antibody responses. This study aimed to identify key variables associated with strain-specific antibody responses in COPD patients and healthy older people. 76 COPD and 72 healthy participants were recruited from two Australian centres and inoculated with influenza vaccine. Serum strain-specific antibody titres were measured pre- and post-inoculation. Seroconversion rate was the primary endpoint. Antibody responses varied between vaccine strains. The highest rates of seroconversion were seen with novel strains (36–55%), with lesser responses to strains included in the vaccine in more than one consecutive year (27–33%). Vaccine responses were similar in COPD patients and healthy participants. Vaccine strain, hypertension and latitude were independent predictors of seroconversion. Our findings reassure that influenza vaccination is equally immunogenic in COPD patients and healthy older people; however, there is room for improvement. There may be a need to personalise the yearly influenza vaccine, including consideration of pre-existing antibody titres, in order to target gaps in individual antibody repertoires and improve protection
Organization of β-adrenoceptor signaling compartments by sympathetic innervation of cardiac myocytes
The sympathetic nervous system regulates cardiac function through the activation of adrenergic receptors (ARs). β1 and β2ARs are the primary sympathetic receptors in the heart and play different roles in regulating cardiac contractile function and remodeling in response to injury. In this study, we examine the targeting and trafficking of β1 and β2ARs at cardiac sympathetic synapses in vitro. Sympathetic neurons form functional synapses with neonatal cardiac myocytes in culture. The myocyte membrane develops into specialized zones that surround contacting axons and contain accumulations of the scaffold proteins SAP97 and AKAP79/150 but are deficient in caveolin-3. The β1ARs are enriched within these zones, whereas β2ARs are excluded from them after stimulation of neuronal activity. The results indicate that specialized signaling domains are organized in cardiac myocytes at sites of contact with sympathetic neurons and that these domains are likely to play a role in the subtype-specific regulation of cardiac function by β1 and β2ARs in vivo
The Anatomy of Star Formation in NGC 300
The Spitzer Space Telescope was used to study the mid-infrared to
far-infrared properties of NGC 300, and to compare dust emission to Halpha to
elucidate the heating of the ISM and the star formation cycle at scales < 100
pc. The new data allow us to discern clear differences in the spatial
distribution of 8 micron dust emission with respect to 24 micron dust and to
HII regions traced by the Halpha light. The 8 micron emission highlights the
rims of HII regions, and the 24 micron emission is more strongly peaked in star
forming regions than at 8 microns. We confirm the existence and approximate
amplitude of interstellar dust emission at 4.5 microns, detected statistically
in Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) data, and conclude it arises in star
forming regions. When averaging over regions larger than ~ 1 kpc, the ratio of
Halpha to Aromatic Feature emission in NGC 300 is consistent with the values
observed in disks of spiral galaxies. The mid-to-far-infrared spectral energy
distribution of dust emission is generally consistent with pre-Spitzer models.Comment: to appear in the ApJS Spitzer special issue (September 2004
