Symmetric subgroups of rational groups of hermitian type
A rational group of hermitian type is an algebraic group over the rational
numbers whose symmetric space is a hermitian symmetric space. We assume such a
group to be given, which we assume is isotropic. Then, for any rational
parabolic in the group , we find a reductive rational subgroup
closely related with by a relation we call incidence. This has implications
to the geometry of arithmetic quotients of the symmetric space by arithmetic
subgroups of , in the sense that defines a subvariety on such an
arithmetic quotient which has special behaviour at the cusp corresponding to
the parabolic with which is incident.Comment: 29 pages (11 pt), ps-file also available at the home page

Computerâaided assessment in statistics: The CAMPUS project
This paper describes the specification, features and implementation of computerâaided assessment software designed primarily for conducting assessments in Statistics but equally applicable to other quantitative disciplines. The CAMPUS (Computer Aided Marking Program Using Spreadsheets) package has been developed in Microsoft Excel so as to provide a familiar computing environment for both assessors and students. The principal feature of CAMPUS is the facility for setting questions containing random elements (including random graphs), so that each student sits essentially the same questions but with different answers. This helps to eliminate plagiarism and allows a single test to be used many times, either for reassessment or additional practice. CAMPUS has been implemented in a higherâeducation context but could also be used at school level
Wicked, Hard and Supple: An Examination of Suzanne Valadon's Nude Drawings of Young Maurice
This article examines the nude drawings Suzanne Valadon made of her young son, Maurice Utrillo. These drawings, depicting Utrillo from late childhood until adolescence, began Valadon's interest in the male nude, which she carried into her later career. Though children appeared often in her work, the drawings of Utrillo are complicated by the relationship between the artist and subject.Publisher allows immediate open acces

How Corruption Hits People When They Are Down
Using cross-country and Peruvian data, I show that victims of misfortune, particularly crime victims, are much more likely than convictism to bribe public officials. Misfortune increases victimsâ demand for public services, raising bribery indirectly, and also increases victimsâ propensity to bribe certain officials conditional on using them, possibly because victims are desperate, vulnerable, or demanding services particularly prone to corruption. The effect is strongest for bribery of the police, where the increase in bribery comes principally through increased use of the police. For the judiciary the effect is also strong, and for some misfortunes is composed equally of an increase in use and an increase in bribery conditional on use. The expense and disutility of bribing thus compound the misery brought by misfortune.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/57216/1/wp836 .pd
Communications in education
The paper aims to provide evidence of the role of communications in education. The term communications is used in three interrelated ways: it refers to the interactions and engagements which take place between different actors in the education sector; it looks at the transmission of information, knowledge or data between two or more points; and it refers to the processes and means though which these interactions take place. The report identifies where communications in the education sector has been successful and some of its weaknesses. The paper focuses on spaces for communications in education, the processes of communications and the direct and indirect impacts of communications initiatives. It gives examples of a range of communication initiatives and provides evidence of impact, where available
