Systematic {\em ab initio} study of the phase diagram of epitaxially strained SrTiO
We use density-functional theory with the local-density approximation to
study the structural and ferroelectric properties of SrTiO under misfit
strains. Both the antiferrodistortive (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE)
instabilities are considered. The rotation of the oxygen octahedra and the
movement of the atoms are fully relaxed within the constraint of a fixed
in-plane lattice constant. We find a rich misfit strain-induced phase
transition sequence and is obtained only when the AFD distortion is taken into
account. We also find that compressive misfit strains induce ferroelectricity
in the tetragonal low temperature phase only whilst tensile strains induce
ferroelectricity in the orthorhombic phases only. The calculated FE
polarization for both the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases increases
monotonically with the magnitude of the strains. The AFD rotation angle of the
oxygen octahedra in the tetragonal phase increases dramatically as the misfit
strain goes from the tensile to compressive strain region whilst it decreases
slightly in the orthorhombic (FO4) phase. This reveals why the polarization in
the epitaxially strained SrTiO would be larger when the tensile strain is
applied, since the AFD distortion is found to reduce the FE instability and
even to completely suppress it in the small strain region. Finally, our
analysis of the average polar distortion and the charge density distribution
suggests that both the Ti-O and Sr-O layers contribute significantly to the FE
polarization
Graphic-Card Cluster for Astrophysics (GraCCA) -- Performance Tests
In this paper, we describe the architecture and performance of the GraCCA
system, a Graphic-Card Cluster for Astrophysics simulations. It consists of 16
nodes, with each node equipped with 2 modern graphic cards, the NVIDIA GeForce
8800 GTX. This computing cluster provides a theoretical performance of 16.2
TFLOPS. To demonstrate its performance in astrophysics computation, we have
implemented a parallel direct N-body simulation program with shared time-step
algorithm in this system. Our system achieves a measured performance of 7.1
TFLOPS and a parallel efficiency of 90% for simulating a globular cluster of
1024K particles. In comparing with the GRAPE-6A cluster at RIT (Rochester
Institute of Technology), the GraCCA system achieves a more than twice higher
measured speed and an even higher performance-per-dollar ratio. Moreover, our
system can handle up to 320M particles and can serve as a general-purpose
computing cluster for a wide range of astrophysics problems.Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronom
Cannot Live without Facebook? An Expectation Confirmation Model with the Moderating Effects of Narcissism
Facebook provides an ideal channel for people to admire their own performance. People tend to show off themselves to others and confirming their feedback on Facebook. With behavior on Facebook, narcissism is now highlighted by many researchers. Hence, based on the expectation confirmation theory (ECT), our study looks into continuance Facebook usage behaviors. It explores the relationship between perceived feedback, confirmation, satisfaction, and continuance intentions, and most important of all, it examines the moderating effects of narcissistic traits on these relationships. Data are collected from 420 valid respondents through self-administered questionnaires. Results revealed that: (1) Continuance Facebook behavior intention is jointly influenced by perceived feedback and satisfaction, which in turn is determined by confirmation. Then, confirmation is influenced by perceived feedback; (2) Narcissism has the moderating effect on the relationships between feedback and confirmation as well as confirmation and satisfaction. Finally, interpretations and implication of these findings are discussed
Development of vital signs detection system with ground noise cancellation
This study provides an experimental procedure and a noise immunity method for detecting the vital signs of a person in a vehicle. Velocity sensors that are convenient and accurate at acquiring data are adopted to detect the involuntary body vibrations. Two kinds of algorithms were proposed for detecting the vital signs in different environments with various ground noise level. To reduce the ground noise effect generated from extreme environments, a ground sensor also is used to measure the vibration amplitude of ground surface for calculating the car body response to provide excellent noise cancelling method. Measuring and processing the vibrations are effective methods for detecting people concealed in a vehicle. The complete detecting system was verified through experiment conducted with a passenger car
SOFTWARE-AS-A-SERVICE (SAAS) INNOVATION IN THE CONTEXT OF SOFTWARE INDUSTRY: A RESOURCE ORCHESTRATION PERSPECTIVE
Cloud computing brings a paradigm shift in the software industry and changes the business model of software vendors (SV). Software as a service (SaaS), the most popular form of cloud computing, has been recognized as the fundamental change in the delivery, utilization, and management of software. While the transformation to SaaS requires changes within the organization, SVs must actively take action to attract customers to accept the SaaS business model, the so-called pull strategy. Drawing on the resource orchestration view, we propose that the antecedents (i.e., structuring cloud resources, developing service bundling capability, and leveraging cloud ecosystem) are related to the likelihood of an innovative SaaS, which, in turn, is associated with SaaS attractiveness to users. Our proposed research framework provides a guideline for SV to attract and persuade customers to adopt SaaS solutions actively
A novel regulatory event-based gene set analysis method for exploring global functional changes in heterogeneous genomic data sets

Abstract

Background

Analyzing gene expression data by assessing the significance of pre-defined gene sets, rather than individual genes, has become a main approach in microarray data analysis and this has promisingly derive new biological interpretations of microarray data. However, the detection power of conventional gene list or gene set-based approaches is limited on highly heterogeneous samples, such as tumors.

Results

We developed a novel method, the regulatory event-based Gene Set Analysis (eGSA), which considers not only the consistently changed genes but also every gene regulation (event) of each sample to overcome the detection limit. In comparison with conventional methods, eGSA can detect functional changes in heterogeneous samples more precisely and robustly. Furthermore, by utilizing eGSA, we successfully revealed novel functional characteristics and potential mechanisms of very early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Conclusion

Our study creates a novel scheme to directly target the major cellular functional changes in heterogeneous samples. All potential regulatory routines of a functional change can be further analyzed by the regulatory event frequency. We also provide a case study on early HCCs and reveal a novel insight at the initial stage of hepatocarcinogenesis. eGSA therefore accelerates and refines the interpretation of heterogeneous genomic data sets in the absence of gene-phenotype correlations.</p
Safety and Efficacy of Tien-Hsien Liquid Practical in Patients with Refractory Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group, Phase IIa Trial
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Tien-Hsien Liquid Practical (THL-P), a Chinese herbal mixture, in patients with refractory metastatic breast cancer, we performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, phase IIa pilot trial. Patients were randomly assigned to either receive THL-P or matching placebo and followed up every 4 weeks for 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was changes in the global health status/quality of life (GHS/QOL) scale. The secondary endpoints were changes in functional and symptom scales, immunomodulating effects, and adverse events. Sixty-three patients were enrolled between June 2009 and June 2011. The intent-to-treat population included 28 patients in the THL-P group and 11 patients in the placebo group. Compared to the placebo group, the THL-P group had significant improvement from baseline to last visit in GHS/QOL (41.7 versus −33.3; P < 0.05), CD3, CD4/CD8, CD19, CD16+56 positive cells (P < 0.05), and higher levels of physical, role, emotional, and cognitive functioning, as well as decreased fatigue and systemic side effects. Treatment-related adverse events were mild constipation and localized itching, and no serious adverse events were reported. THL-P appears to be a safe alternative adjuvant treatment for patients with refractory metastatic breast cancer, as it effectively improves QOL and palliates cancer-related symptoms
Technical aspects of single-port thoracoscopic surgery for lobectomy
Thoracoscopic Surgery is in common use in routine surgical practice. With the advancement of the various techniques and instruments required, mini wounds and fewer thoracoports become practical in recent years. Here, we report our experience of performing lobectomy with radical lymph node dissection in 3 patients using regular straight endoscopic instruments. We demonstrate the feasibility of such techniques and discuss the key points of effectively performing the procedures. Because of the favorable outcomes, we encourage such procedures to be widely applied in surgical operations of various types
