Functions of miRNAs in the Development, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Ovarian Carcinoma

    Get PDF
miRNAs (miRNA) are small RNA molecules that are not to expressed to proteins. Their size is 20–22 nucleotides in length and they are highly conserved molecules among the species. miRNAs are synthesized in the nucleus as a primary miRNA. Primary miRNA is transferred to cytoplasm by Xpo5 protein (exportin-5) and then is processed by Dicer enzyme to a 22-nucleotide-sized long mature miRNA. miRNAs are differentially expressed in different diseases and are released into plasma by normal and tumor tissues during the cell metabolism. Ovarian carcinoma is the deadliest cancer among women. When the disease was diagnosed, the disease usually progressed. Currently, there is no biological marker to detect ovarian carcinoma at an early stage. Furthermore, there is a need for markers that are sensitive to chemotherapy changes and early detection of the disease. Because of this, miRNAs can be detected in plasma and can be used as highly significant biological markers and therapeutic targets for ovarian carcinoma. When the literature of the last 5 years is searched, there are many studies about miRNA and ovarian carcinoma. In this chapter, studies examining the relationship between ovarian carcinoma and miRNA from different angles are summarized under different sections

Mentoring Undergraduate Research in Education and Business: Transformation in Global and Local Communities

    Get PDF
The purpose of this presentation is to highlight avenues toward undergraduate scholarship in education and business. The common theme of these initiatives is the transformative learning which students experienced in local and global communities. In education, the examples include a course-embedded action research with community service, and autoethnography in which students analyzed their experiences abroad to uncover the process of transformation. In business, students worked on a semester long project in quality management collaborating with a local health equipment manufacturer. The systematic guidance of the business and continuous feedback of the instruction, resulted in full transformation of student learning

This presentation describes faculty-Library collaboration efforts to enhance research and information literacy skills of our undergraduate students. An example of collaboration between business Faculty and Library Coordinator to facilitate research problem and data finding is presented with Canvas demonstration. The structured methodology is presented with implications on the experiential learning efforts. Additional examples from Library to improve information literacy and writing skills to enhance UG research are demonstrate

Strategies to Use Work-Study Research Program to Enhance Professional Development of Transferable Skills

    Get PDF
Florida Gulf Coast University started a work-study program to provide students with financial need the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research. Faculty working with students research facilitate the development of traditional skill sets, including discipline knowledge, interpersonal skills, methodology development, analytical skills for the discipline, etc. To accompany this traditional research experience, the WiSER Eagles program (Work-study in Scholarly Experiential Research) provides an opportunity to enhance the professional development of transferable skills. We will discuss the connection between undergraduate research and transferable skills, the incorporation of professional development in the program, enhancing this effort moving forward

FGCUScholars: Using Undergraduate Research as a Tool to Enhance Student Writing, Critical Thinking, and Information Literacy

    Get PDF
This presentation will overview FGCUScholars, a university-wide program at Florida Gulf Coast University that integrates undergraduate research across the university as a means of teaching and assessing writing, critical thinking, and information literacy. We will overview the development and learning outcomes of FGCUScholars and the implementation across the campus, highlighting examples of curricular changes in engineering that engage students throughout their career at FGCU, the role of problem/project-based learning (PBL) in business classes, the development of research assignments that use digital media in literature courses, and the creation of disciplinary-specific sections of Composition II

Identification of candidate genes in a family with cancer overload by whole-exome sequencing

Background. Approximately 120 out of every 1 million children in the world develop cancer each year. In Turkey, 2500-3000 children are diagnosed with new cancer each year. The causes of childhood cancer have been studied for many years. It is known that many cancers in children, as in adults, cause uncontrolled cell growth, and develop as a result of mutations in genes that cause cancer. Methods. The investigation of family history within this context in the study, a total of 13 individuals consisting of all children and adults in the family were examined using the whole-exome sequencing (WES) with the individuals who were diagnosed with cancer in the family, who were detected to have different cancer profiles, and defined as high risk and to determine the gene or genes through which the disease has developed. Results. At the end of the study, a total of 30 variants with a pathogenic record in the family were identified. A total of 10 pathogenic variants belonging to 8 different genes from these variants have been associated with various cancer risks. Conclusions. A significant scientific contribution has been made to the mechanism of disease formation by studying a family with a high cancer burden and by finding the genes associated with the disease. In addition, by the results obtained, family members with cancer predisposition were selected after a risk analysis conducted in this family, and the necessary examinations and scans were recommended to provide an early diagnostic advantage. © 2022, Turkish National Pediatric Society.
