Behoud de <i>bijdragen</i>, vernieuw de vorm

In de afgelopen vijftig jaar heeft BMGN zich staande gehouden in een versnipperend tijdschriftenlandschap en een snel internationaliserende geschiedbeoefening – zij liep daarbij zelfs voorop bij de digitalisering. De bestaansreden van BMGN is door de opeenvolgende redacties gevonden in het entameren van historisch debat. Daarin zijn zij succesvol gebleken, al waren de discussanten wellicht te homogeen. Een koploper in historiografische vernieuwing is BMGN niet geweest en, zo stellen wij, dat zou zij als geografisch gedefinieerd tijdschrift ook niet moeten beogen. Beter kan BMGN zich ook in de toekomst richten op vormvernieuwing en wel op drie manieren. Ten eerste door het publicatieproces anders in te richten met als doel de peer review nuttiger en aantrekkelijker te maken. Ten tweede door artikelformats los te laten, discussie en debat nog meer ruimte te geven en experimentele bijdragen te stimuleren. Ten derde door het primaat van digitaal publiceren te aanvaarden en de mogelijkheden die dat biedt beter te benutten. In the past fifty years the BMGN has prevailed amid a fragmenting journal landscape and rapidly internationalising historical scholarship and has even done pioneering work in digitisation. Successive editorial boards established the raison d’être of the BMGN by initiating historical debate. They have succeeded in this endeavour, although those participating in the discussions may have been overly homogeneous. The BMGN has not been a trailblazer in historiographic innovation, nor should it aim to be, in our view, as a geographically defined journal. The BMGN would benefit in the future from focusing on three form innovations. First, by revising the publication process to make the peer review more useful and appealing. Second, by digressing from article formats, doing more to promote discussion and debate and encouraging experimental contributions. Third, by accepting the primacy of digital publishing and making better use of the opportunities it offers

The Exchange Programme of the Belgian American Educational Foundation: An Institutional Perspective on Scientific Persona Formation (1920-1940).

In this article we propose an institutional perspective on persona formation. Not unlike individual scientists, institutions such as funding bodies took an active interest in shaping the scientific persona. As a case in point, we discuss the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) that sent hundreds of aspiring Belgian scientists to the United States during the Interwar period. The BAEF went to great lengths to optimise its selection procedure and formulated conditions pertaining to both the mental and physical fitness of its grantees. In this way, the BAEF cut off some repertoires of being a scientist and encouraged its fellows to demonstrate certain qualities when in front of the funding body. This, we argue, points to the performative and occasional character of scientific personae. Geschikt om te reizen. Het uitwisselingsprogramma van de Belgian American Education Foundation. Een institutioneel perspectief op de vorming van wetenschappelijke personae (1920-1940). In dit artikel benaderen wij de vorming van personae vanuit een institutioneel perspectief. Net als individuele wetenschappers zijn instituties zoals funding bodies actief betrokken bij het scheppen en in standhouden van wetenschappelijke personae. Als voorbeeld hiervan bespreken wij de Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF). In het Interbellum zond de BAEF honderden wetenschappers-in-wording naar de Verenigde Staten. Daarbij getroostte de organisatie zich veel moeite om de selectieprocedure te optimaliseren en stelde zij voorwaarden aan zowel de mentale als fysieke conditie van haar fellows. De BAEF maakte hiermee sommige repertoires van het wetenschapper-zijn onmogelijk, terwijl zij haar fellows aanmoedigde om bepaalde andere kwaliteiten voor het voetlicht te brengen voor de ogen van de funding body. Formal modelling and verification of an interlocking using mCRL2

This paper presents an application of the formal modelling and model checking toolkit mCRL2 and the model-based testing tool JTorX in the signalling domain. The mCRL2 toolkit is used to formally model the behaviour of a system at the core of signalling solutions: the interlocking. The model of the interlocking is validated through model-based testing. We use the mCRL2 toolkit to verify high-level safety properties of the interlocking software. The suitability of mCRL2, JTorX and our modelling approach is evaluated and suggestions are given for future research to improve the applicability of mCRL2 in the signalling domain.</p
