Bone is a complex composite material with hierarchical structures and anisotropic mechanical properties. Bone also processes electromechanical properties, such as piezoelectricity and streaming potentials, which termed as stress generated potentials. Furthermore, the electrostrictive effect and flexoelectric effect can also affect electromechanical properties of the bone. In the present work, time responses of bending deflections of bone cantilever in an external electric field are measured experimentally to investigate bone's electromechanical behavior. It is found that, when subjected to a square waveform electric field, a bone cantilever specimen begins to bend and its deflection increases gradually to a peak value. Then, the deflection begins to decrease gradually during the period of constant voltage. To analyze the reasons of the bending response of bone, additional experiments were performed. Experimental results obtained show the following two features. The first one is that the electric polarization, induced in bone by an electric field, is due to the Maxwell-Wagner polarization mechanism that the polarization rate is relatively slow, which leads to the electric field force acted on a bone specimen increase gradually and then its bending deflections increase gradually. The second one is that the flexoelectric polarization effect that resists the electric force to decrease and then leads to the bending deflection of a bone cantilever decrease gradually. It is concluded that the first aspect refers to the organic collagens decreasing the electric polarization rate of the bone, and the second one to the inorganic component influencing the bone's polarization intensity. The work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No. 11372218

Superfolded configuration induced low thermal conductivity in two-dimensional carbon allotropes revealed via machine learning force constant potential

Understanding the fundamental link between structure and functionalization is crucial for the design and optimization of functional materials, since different structural configurations could trigger materials to demonstrate diverse physical, chemical, and electronic properties. However, the correlation between crystal structure and thermal conductivity (\k{appa}) remains enigmatic. In this study, taking two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotropes as study cases, we utilize phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) along with machine learning force constant potential to thoroughly explore the complex folding structure of pure sp2 hybridized carbon materials from the perspective of crystal structure, mode-level phonon resolved thermal transport, and atomic interactions, with the goal of identifying the underlying relationship between 2D geometry and \k{appa}. We propose two potential structure evolution mechanisms for targeted thermal transport properties: in-plane and out-of-plane folding evolutions, which are generally applicable to 2D carbon allotropes. It is revealed that the folded structure produces strong symmetry breaking, and simultaneously produces exceptionally strongly suppressed phonon group velocities, strong phonon-phonon scattering, and weak phonon hydrodynamics, which ultimately lead to low \k{appa}. The insight into the folded effect of atomic structures on thermal transport deepens our understanding of the relationship between structure and functionalization, which offers straightforward guidance for designing novel nanomaterials with targeted \k{appa}, as well as propel developments in materials science and engineering

Automatic extraction of water inundation areas using Sentinel-1 dnata for large plain areas.

Accurately quantifying water inundation dynamics in terms of both spatial distributions and temporal variability is essential for water resources management. Currently, the water map is usually derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with the support of auxiliary datasets, using thresholding methods and followed by morphological operations to further refine the results. However, auxiliary datasets may lose efficacy on large plain areas, whilst the parameters of morphological operations are hard to be decided in different situations. Here, a heuristic and automatic water extraction (HAWE) method is proposed to extract the water map from Sentinel-1 SAR data. In the HAWE, we integrate tile-based thresholding and the active contour model, in which the former provides a convincing initial water map used as a heuristic input, and the latter refines the initial map by using image gradient information. The proposed approach was tested on the Dongting Lake plain (China) by comparing the extracted water map with the reference data derived from the Sentinel-2 dataset. For the two selected test sites, the overall accuracy of water classification is between 94.90% and 97.21% whilst the Kappa coefficient is within the range of 0.89 and 0.94. For the entire study area, the overall accuracy is between 94.32% and 96.7% and the Kappa coefficient ranges from 0.80 to 0.90. The results show that the proposed method is capable of extracting water inundations with satisfying accuracy

A dehazing method for flight view images based on transformer and physical priori

Aiming at the problems of local dehazing distortion and incomplete global dehazing of existing algorithms in real airborne cockpit environments, a two-stage dehazing method PhysiFormer combining physical a priori with a Transformer oriented flight perspective was proposed. The first stage used synthetic pairwise data to pre-train the dehazing model. First, a pyramid pooling module (PPM) was introduced in the Transformer for multiscale feature extraction to solve the problem of poor recovery of local details, then a global context fusion mechanism was used to enable the model to better perceive global information. Finally, considering that combining the physical a priori needs to rely on the estimation of the atmosphere light, an encoding-decoding structure based on the residual blocks was used to estimate the atmosphere light, which was then used for dehazing through the atmospheric scattering model for dehazing. The second stage used real images combined with physical priori to optimize the model to better fit the real airborne environment. The experimental results show that the proposed method has better naturalness image quality evaluator (NIQE) and blind/referenceless image spatial quality evaluator (BRISQUE) indexes and exhibits the best dehazing visual effect in the tests of dense haze, non-uniform haze and real haze images, which effectively improves the problems of color distortion and haze residue

Lack of association between apolipoprotein C3 gene polymorphisms and risk of coronary heart disease in a Han population in East China

Abstract

Background

Several polymorphisms in the apolipoprotein C3 (APOC3) gene have been found association with hypertriglyceridemia(HTG), but the link with coronary heart disease(CHD) risk between ethnicities was still controversial. Among them, reseachers paid more attentions to the promoter polymorphisms T-455C and C-482T because both of them located in insulin-responsive element (IRE) and insulin was thought to exert its action by down-regulating APOC3 gene expression. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the two polymorphisms of APOC3 with CHD in a Han population in East China.

Methods

TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assays were carried out to detect the genotypes of APOC3 gene, including the T-455C and C-482T, in 286 subjects with CHD and 325 controls without CHD. The levels of serum lipid profiles were also detected by biochemical methods.

Results

There was no difference of genotype frequencies and allele frequencies between the CHD population and the controls(P > 0.05). Compared with the most common genotype -455TT or -482CC, the variants had neither significantly increased CHD risk, nor the lipid variables showed any statistically relevant differences in the research population. The adjusted OR of CHD were 5.67 [0.27-18.74] and 0.75 [0.20-2.73] in carriers of the APOC3 -455C and -482T variants, respectively(P > 0.05). There was also no significant difference in APOC3 haplotype distribution in CHD and controls, but there was a strong linkage disequilibrium between T-455C and C-482T with D' = 0.9293, 0.8881, respectively(P < 0.0001).

Conclusions

Our data did not support a relationship between the two polymorphisms of APOC3 gene and risk of CHD in the Han population in East China.</p

Controllable synthesis of flake-like Al-doped ZnO nanostructures and its application in inverted organic solar cells

Flake-like Al-doped ZnO (AZO) nanostructures including dense AZO nanorods were obtained via a low-temperature (100Ā°C) hydrothermal process. By doping and varying Al concentrations, the electrical conductivity (Ļƒ) and morphology of the AZO nanostructures can be readily controlled. The effect of Ļƒ and morphology of the AZO nanostructures on the performance of the inverted organic solar cells (IOSCs) was studied. It presents that the optimized power conversion efficiency of the AZO-based IOSCs is improved by approximately 58.7% compared with that of un-doped ZnO-based IOSCs. This is attributed to that the flake-like AZO nanostructures of high Ļƒ and tunable morphology not only provide a high-conduction pathway to facilitate electron transport but also lead to a large interfacial area for exciton dissociation and charge collection by electrodes

Case Report: Talaromyces marneffei Infection in a Chinese Child With a Complex Heterozygous CARD9 Mutation

Talaromyces marneffei (TM) infection is rarely seen in clinical practice, and its pathogenesis may be related to deficiency in antifungal immune function. Human caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 9 (CARD9) is a key molecule in fungal immune surveillance. There have been no previous case reports of TM infection in individuals with CARD9 gene mutations. Herein, we report the case of a 7-month-old Chinese boy who was admitted to our hospital with recurring cough and fever with a papular rash. A blood culture produced TM growth, which was confirmed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing. One of the patientā€™s sisters had died of TM septicaemia at 9 months of age. Whole exome sequencing revealed that the patient had a complex heterozygous CARD9 gene mutation with a c.1118G>C p.R373P variation in exon 8 and a c.610C>T p.R204C variation in exon 4. Based on the culture results, voriconazole antifungal therapy was administered. On the third day of antifungal administration, his temperature dropped to within normal range, the rash gradually subsided, and the enlargement of his lymph nodes, liver, and spleen improved. Two months after discharge, he returned to the hospital for a follow-up examination. His general condition was good, and no specific abnormalities were detected. Oral voriconazole treatment was continued. Unexplained TM infection in HIV-negative individuals warrants investigation for immune deficiencies

beta1 integrin- and JNK-dependent tumor growth upon hypofractionated radiation

Radiation therapy is an effective cancer treatment modality although tumors invariably become resistant. Using the transgenic adenocarcinoma of mouse prostate (TRAMP) model system, we report that a hypofractionated radiation schedule (10 Gy/day for 5 consecutive days) effectively blocks prostate tumor growth in wild type (beta1wt /TRAMP) mice as well as in mice carrying a conditional ablation of beta1 integrins in the prostatic epithelium (beta1pc-/- /TRAMP). Since JNK is known to be suppressed by beta1 integrins and mediates radiation-induced apoptosis, we tested the effect of SP600125, an inhibitor of c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK) in the TRAMP model system. Our results show that SP600125 negates the effect of radiation on tumor growth in beta1pc-/- /TRAMP mice and leads to invasive adenocarcinoma. These effects are associated with increased focal adhesion kinase (FAK) expression and phosphorylation in prostate tumors in beta1pc-/- /TRAMP mice. In marked contrast, radiation-induced tumor growth suppression, FAK expression and phosphorylation are not altered by SP600125 treatment of beta1wt /TRAMP mice. Furthermore, we have reported earlier that abrogation of insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-IR) in prostate cancer cells enhances the sensitivity to radiation. Here we further explore the beta1/IGF-IR crosstalk and report that beta1 integrins promote cell proliferation partly by enhancing the expression of IGF-IR. In conclusion, we demonstrate that beta1 integrin-mediated inhibition of JNK signaling modulates tumor growth rate upon hypofractionated radiation
