The interaction of central and peripheral processing in L2 handwritten production : evidence from cross-linguistic variations
The current study explores the interplay between central and peripheral processes in second language (L2) handwriting among bilinguals with diverse orthographic backgrounds. Our investigation delves into the cross-linguistic transfer effect in Spanish–English and Chinese–English bilinguals, emphasizing lexical frequency and phoneme-grapheme (P-O) consistency in spelling-to-dictation and immediate copying tasks. Results reveal that the interaction between central and peripheral processes in L2 handwritten production is shaped by the bilinguals' native language (L1) orthographic characteristics. Spanish–English bilinguals exhibited sensitivity to P-O consistency and the spread of this effect from central to peripheral processes throughout both tasks. Conversely, Chinese–English bilinguals showed heightened sensitivity to lexical frequency during orthographic planning and motor execution, particularly in the immediate copying task. In a broader context, these findings suggest that the parallel and cascading coordination of the L2 writing system is modulated by cross-linguistic variations. The implications of our findings hold relevance for handwriting production and bilingualism research
Comparison of Mortality Outcomes in Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients With or Without Standard Modifiable Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) cases have decreased in part due to the advent of targeted therapies for standard modifiable cardiovascular disease risk factors (SMuRF). Recent studies have reported that ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients without SMuRF (termed "SMuRF-less") may be increasing in prevalence and have worse outcomes than "SMuRF-positive" patients. As these studies have been limited to STEMI and comprised mainly Caucasian cohorts, we investigated the changes in the prevalence and mortality of both SMuRF-less STEMI and non-STEMI (NSTEMI) patients in a multiethnic Asian population. Methods: We evaluated 23,922 STEMI and 62,631 NSTEMI patients from a national multiethnic registry. Short-term cardiovascular and all-cause mortalities in SMuRF-less patients were compared to SMuRF-positive patients. Results: The proportions of SMuRF-less STEMI but not of NSTEMI have increased over the years. In hospitals, all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and 1-year cardiovascular mortality were significantly higher in SMuRF-less STEMI after adjustment for age, creatinine, and hemoglobin. However, this difference did not remain after adjusting for anterior infarction, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Killip class. There were no differences in mortality in SMuRF-less NSTEMI. In contrast to Chinese and Malay patients, SMuRF-less patients of South Asian descent had a two-fold higher risk of in-hospital all-cause mortality even after adjusting for features of increased disease severity. Conclusion: SMuRF-less patients had an increased risk of mortality with STEMI, suggesting that there may be unidentified nonstandard risk factors predisposing SMuRF-less patients to a worse prognosis. This group of patients may benefit from more intensive secondary prevention strategies to improve clinical outcomes
Association between smoking status and outcomes in myocardial infarction patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
Smoking is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease and hypertension. However, in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients, smoking has been associated with better clinical outcomes, a phenomenon termed the “smoker’s paradox.” Given the known detrimental effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system, it has been proposed that the beneficial effect of smoking on outcomes is due to age differences between smokers and non-smokers and is therefore a smoker’s pseudoparadox. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between smoking status and clinical outcomes in ST-segment elevation (STEMI) and non-STEMI (NSTEMI) patients treated by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), using a national multi-ethnic Asian registry. In unadjusted analyses, current smokers had better clinical outcomes following STEMI and NSTEMI. However, after adjusting for age, the protective effect of smoking was lost, confirming a smoker’s pseudoparadox. Interestingly, although current smokers had increased risk for recurrent MI within 1 year after PCI in both STEMI and NSTEMI patients, there was no increase in mortality. In summary, we confirm the existence of a smoker’s pseudoparadox in a multi-ethnic Asian cohort of STEMI and NSTEMI patients and report increased risk of recurrent MI, but not mortality, in smokers
Association of body mass index, metabolic health status and clinical outcomes in acute myocardial infarction patients: a national registry-based study
IntroductionObesity is an important risk factor for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), but the interplay between metabolic health and obesity on AMI mortality has been controversial. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the risk of short- and long-term all-cause mortality by obesity and metabolic health in AMI patients using data from a multi-ethnic national AMI registry.MethodsA total of 73,382 AMI patients from the national Singapore Myocardial Infarction Registry (SMIR) were included. These patients were classified into four groups based on the presence or absence of metabolic diseases, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia, and hypertension, and obesity: (1) metabolically-healthy-normal-weight (MHN); (2) metabolically-healthy-obese (MHO); (3) metabolically-unhealthy-normal-weight (MUN); and (4) metabolically-unhealthy-obese (MUO).ResultsMHO patients had reduced unadjusted risk of all-cause in-hospital, 30-day, 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year mortality following the initial MI event. However, after adjusting for potential confounders, the protective effect from MHO on post-AMI mortality was lost. Furthermore, there was no reduced risk of recurrent MI or stroke within 1-year from onset of AMI by the MHO status. However, the risk of 1-year mortality was higher in female and Malay AMI patients with MHO compared to MHN even after adjusting for confounders.ConclusionIn AMI patients with or without metabolic diseases, the presence of obesity did not affect mortality. The exception to this finding were female and Malay MHO who had worse long-term AMI mortality outcomes when compared to MHN suggesting that the presence of obesity in female and Malay patients may confer worsened outcomes

The Third-Order Elastic Constants and Mechanical Properties of 30° Partial Dislocation in Germanium: A Study from the First-Principles Calculations and the Improved Peierls–Nabarro Model
The elastic constants, core width and Peierls stress of 30° partial dislocation in germanium has been investigated based on the first-principles calculations and the improved Peierls–Nabarro model. Our results suggest that the predictions of lattice constant and elastic constants given by LDA are in better agreement with experiment results. While the lattice constant is overestimated at about 2.4% and most elastic constants are underestimated at about 20% by the GGA method. Furthermore, when the applied deformation is larger than 2%, the nonlinear elastic effects should be considered. And with the Lagrangian strains up to 8%, taking into account the third-order terms in the energy expansion is sufficient. Except the original γ—surface generally used before (given by the first-principles calculations directly), the effective γ—surface proposed by Kamimura et al. derived from the original one is also used to study the Peierls stress. The research results show that when the intrinsic−stacking−fault energy (ISFE) is very low relative to the unstable−stacking−fault energy (USFE), the difference between the original γ—surface and the effective γ—surface is inapparent and there is nearly no difference between the results of Peierls stresses calculated from these two kinds of γ—surfaces. As a result, the original γ—surface can be directly used to study the core width and Peierls stress when the ratio of ISFE to the USFE is small. Since the negligence of the discrete effect and the contribution of strain energy to the dislocation energy, the Peierls stress given by the classical Peierls–Nabarro model is about one order of magnitude larger than that given by the improved Peierls–Nabarro model. The result of Peierls stress estimated by the improved Peierls–Nabarro model agrees well with the 2~3 GPa reported in the book of Solid State Physics edited by F. Seitz and D. Turnbull
Synthesis, Characterization, and Evaluation of Disulfide-Containing Polyethylenimine Derivative Functionalized Magnetic Carbon Nanotubes as an Efficient Gene Vector
Magnetic nanoparticles have been widely developed as vectors in targeting drug and gene delivery. Disulfide-containing polyethylenimine derivative- (SSPEI-) functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNTs/Fe3O4-SSPEI) were synthesized as gene vector. Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize CNTs/Fe3O4-SSPEI nanoparticles. The magnetic nanoparticles displayed typical superparamagnetic behavior and excellent dispersibility in water. Plasmid DNA could be bound by CNTs/Fe3O4-SSPEI to form the complexes. The sizes of complexes are about 400 nm, and the zeta potentials are positive at the w/w ratio over 6. CNTs/Fe3O4-SSPEI nanoparticles displayed higher transfection activity than did PEI (25 kDa), whereas the cytotoxicity was rather lower. Moreover, the transfection efficiency was further increased with the assistance of an external magnetic field. These results indicate that CNTs/Fe3O4-SSPEI nanoparticles would be a promising vector in targeted gene delivery
Matching different-structured advertising pictorial metaphors with verbalization forms: incongruity-based evoked response potentials evidence
Many studies emphasize the need of verbally representing pictorial metaphors, but few have empirically investigated whether and how the particular verbalization form match different types of pictorial metaphors. Using evoked response potentials (ERP), a 3 (pictorial structure: fusion, juxtaposition, literal image) × 2 [verbalization form: A是(is) B, A像(is like) B] within-group experiment was conducted among 36 participants. ERPs were time-locked to the onset of the verb [是/像(is/is like)] of the metaphor sentence that follows a pictorial metaphor to detect the verbo-pictorial incongruity in metaphor comprehension. The incongruity-based ERP analysis showed that pictorial metaphors, when verbalized in two forms, all induced frontal N1 effect, regardless of pictorial structures, only with a larger N1 amplitude for literal images in “A是(is) B.” A central stronger P2 was observed in “A像(is like) B” for three structures. Despite a general elicitation of posterior P3 in all conditions, a larger P3 was found for juxtapositions verbalized in “A像(is like) B” and for literal images verbalized in “A是(is) B.” There was no significant difference between two verbalization forms for fusion-structured pictorial metaphors. These findings suggest: (1) verbo-pictorial metaphors could induce incongruity-based attention; (2) higher verbo-pictorial semantic congruity and relatedness, indexed by stronger P2 and P3, confirmed “A像(is like) B” to be the more effective verbalization form in representing pictorial metaphors, specifically for juxtaposition-structured pictorial metaphors; (3) for non-metaphor advertising pictures, verbal metaphor showed an interference effect. The study not only reveals the neuro-cognitive mechanism of processing verbo-pictorial metaphors, but also offers neural reference for the design of effective multi-modal metaphor by finding an optimal match between PMs and verbalization forms
The embodiment of emotion-label words and emotion-laden words : Evidence from late Chinese–English bilinguals
Although increasing studies have confirmed the distinction between emotion-label words (words directly label emotional states) and emotion-laden words (words evoke emotions through connotations), the existing evidence is inconclusive, and their embodiment is unknown. In the current study, the emotional categorization task was adopted to investigate whether these two types of emotion words are embodied by directly comparing how they are processed in individuals’ native language (L1) and the second language (L2) among late Chinese-English bilinguals. The results revealed that apart from L2 negative emotion-laden words, both types of emotion words in L1 and L2 produced significant emotion effects, with faster response times and/or higher accuracy rates. In addition, processing facilitation for emotion-label words over emotion-laden words was observed irrespective of language operation; a significant three-way interaction between the language, valence and emotion word type was noted. Taken together, this study suggested that the embodiment of emotion words is modulated by the emotion word type, and L2 negative emotion-laden words tend to be affectively disembodied. The disassociation between emotion-label and emotion-laden words is confirmed in both L1 and L2 and therefore, future emotion word research should take the emotion word type into account.peerReviewe
