A Bose-Einstein condensate interferometer with macroscopic arm separation
A Michelson interferometer using Bose-Einstein condensates is demonstrated
with coherence times of up to 44 ms and arm separations up to 0.18 mm. This arm
separation is larger than that observed for any previous atom interferometer.
The device uses atoms weakly confined in a magnetic guide and the atomic motion
is controlled using Bragg interactions with an off-resonant standing wave laser
beam.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Log-periodic modulation in one-dimensional random walks
We have studied the diffusion of a single particle on a one-dimensional
lattice. It is shown that, for a self-similar distribution of hopping rates,
the time dependence of the mean-square displacement follows an anomalous power
law modulated by logarithmic periodic oscillations. The origin of this
modulation is traced to the dependence on the length of the diffusion
coefficient. Both the random walk exponent and the period of the modulation are
analytically calculated and confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
ALMA observations of the debris disk around the young Solar Analog HD 107146
We present ALMA continuum observations at a wavelength of 1.25 mm of the
debris disk surrounding the 100 Myr old solar analog HD 107146. The
continuum emission extends from about 30 to 150 AU from the central star with a
decrease in the surface brightness at intermediate radii. We analyze the ALMA
interferometric visibilities using debris disk models with radial profiles for
the dust surface density parametrized as i) a single power-law, ii) a single
power-law with a gap, and iii) a double power-law. We find that models with a
gap of radial width AU at a distance of AU from the central
star, as well as double power-law models with a dip in the dust surface density
at AU provide significantly better fits to the ALMA data than single
power-law models. We discuss possible scenarios for the origin of the HD 107146
debris disk using models of planetesimal belts in which the formation of
Pluto-sized objects trigger disruptive collisions of large bodies, as well as
models which consider the interaction of a planetary system with a planetesimal
belt and spatial variation of the dust opacity across the disk. If future
observations with higher angular resolution and sensitivity confirm the
fully-depleted gap structure discussed here, a planet with a mass of
approximately a few Earth masses in a nearly circular orbit at AU
from the central star would be a possible explanation for the presence of the
gap.Comment: (38 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
Confinement effects in a guided-wave interferometer with millimeter-scale arm separation
Guided-wave atom interferometers measure interference effects using atoms
held in a confining potential. In one common implementation, the confinement is
primarily two-dimensional, and the atoms move along the nearly free dimension
under the influence of an off-resonant standing wave laser beam. In this
configuration, residual confinement along the nominally free axis can introduce
a phase gradient to the atoms that limits the arm separation of the
interferometer. We experimentally investigate this effect in detail, and show
that it can be alleviated by having the atoms undergo a more symmetric motion
in the guide. This can be achieved by either using additional laser pulses or
by allowing the atoms to freely oscillate in the potential. Using these
techniques, we demonstrate interferometer measurement times up to 72 ms and arm
separations up to 0.42 mm with a well controlled phase, or times of 0.91 s and
separations of 1.7 mm with an uncontrolled phase.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Coagulation reaction in low dimensions: Revisiting subdiffusive A+A reactions in one dimension
We present a theory for the coagulation reaction A+A -> A for particles
moving subdiffusively in one dimension. Our theory is tested against numerical
simulations of the concentration of particles as a function of time
(``anomalous kinetics'') and of the interparticle distribution function as a
function of interparticle distance and time. We find that the theory captures
the correct behavior asymptotically and also at early times, and that it does
so whether the particles are nearly diffusive or very subdiffusive. We find
that, as in the normal diffusion problem, an interparticle gap responsible for
the anomalous kinetics develops and grows with time. This corrects an earlier
claim to the contrary on our part.Comment: The previous version was corrupted - some figures misplaced, some

From playing games to committing crimes: A multi-technique approach to predicting key actors on an online gaming forum
We propose a systematic framework for analysing forum datasets, which contain minimal structure, and are non-trivial to analyse at scale, aiming to support future analysis of underground forum communities. We use a multi-technique approach which draws on a combination of features, including post classifications extracted using natural language processing tools, and apply clustering and predictive techniques to this dataset, to predict potential key actors---individuals who have a central role in overtly criminal activities, or activities which could lead to later offending, and hence might benefit most from interventions. We predict 49 key actors on an underground gaming-specific cheating and hacking forum, validated by observing only overlaps of techniques, combined with topic analysis, to build a classifier for key actor status. In addition, we also use these techniques to provide further insight of key actor activity. We found one cluster and two posting trajectories to contain a high proportion of key actors, logistic regression found an actor's h-index to have higher odds for prediction than other features, and partial dependence plots found reputation to have a significant change in prediction between values of 100 to 1000
A Time-Orbiting Potential Trap for Bose-Einstein Condensate Interferometry
We describe a novel atom trap for Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb to be
used in atom interferometry experiments. The trap is based on a time-orbiting
potential waveguide. It supports the atoms against gravity while providing weak
confinement to minimize interaction effects. We observe harmonic oscillation
frequencies omega_x, omega_y, omega_z as low as 2 pi times (6.0,1.2,3.3) Hz. Up
to 2 times 10^4 condensate atoms have been loaded into the trap, at estimated
temperatures as low as 850 pK. We anticipate that interferometer measurement
times of 1 s or more should be achievable in this device.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Analytical solution of the equation of motion for a rigid domain wall in a magnetic material with perpendicular anisotropy
This paper reports the solution of the equation of motion for a domain wall
in a magnetic material which exhibits high magneto-crystalline anisotropy.
Starting from the Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert equation for field-induced motion,
we solve the equation to give an analytical expression, which specifies the
domain wall position as a function of time. Taking parameters from a Co/Pt
multilayer system, we find good quantitative agreement between calculated and
experimentally determined wall velocities, and show that high field uniform
wall motion occurs when wall rigidity is assumed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
