Growth and surface alloying of Fe on Pt(997)

The growth of ultra-thin layers of Fe on the vicinal Pt(997) surface is studied by thermal energy He atom scattering (TEAS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) in the temperature range between 175K and 800K. We find three distinct regimes of qualitatively different growth type: Below 450K the formation of a smooth first monolayer, at and above 600K the onset of bulk alloy formation, and at intermediate temperature 500K - 550K the formation of a surface alloy. Monatomic Fe rows are observed to decorate the substrate steps between 175K and 500K. The importance of the high step density is discussed with respect to the promotion of smooth layer growth and with respect to the alloying process and its kinetics

ABSTRACT Diabetic angiopathy is a serious problem in antidiabetic therapy. We wanted to investigate whether treatment with the endothelin A receptor antagonist LU 135252 or with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor trandolapril might prevent angiopathy in long-term type I diabetes mellitus. Six groups of male Wistar rats were investigated: untreated age-matched control rats, healthy controls treated with trandolapril (0.3 mg/ kg), healthy controls treated with LU 135252 (100 mg/kg), untreated diabetic rats, and diabetic rats treated with either trandolapril or LU 135252. Rats were rendered diabetic by injection of streptozotozin. Duration of the disease was 6 months. Thereafter, rats were sacrificed, and hearts, kidneys, and a mesenterial loop were removed. Hearts and kidneys were processed histologically; the mesenterial loop was perfused with saline at constant pressure for investigation of microvessels using microvideoangiometry while treated with either 30 mM KCl, 1 M acetylcholine, or 1 M sodium nitroprusside. All diabetic rats developed hyperglycemia without differences among these three groups. Diabetic rats exhibited marked anemia, which was significantly antagonized by both treatments. The heart capillaries/muscle fibers ratio was decreased significantly in diabetic animals, which was prevented fully by both treatments. Renal glomerular diameter was increased in diabetic rats. This was significantly antagonized by LU 135252 but not by trandolapril. Deposition of homogeneous eosinophilic material within the glomeruli was nearly completely prevented by LU 135252. The acetylcholine-induced vasodilation in mesenteric microvessels was significantly attenuated in diabetic rats, which was significantly antagonized by both treatments. We conclude that both angiotensin and endothelin seem to contribute to the development of diabetic angiopathy and that, in addition to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition, blockade of endothelin A receptors may be an interesting new approach to antiangiopathic therapy

The object of the study is scientific and technical term with zoonym key component in presented languages. Objective – to describe and compare the semantic and functional features of zoonymic units within the scientific and technical dictionaries. In the process, the following analysis forms were conducted: zoonym component, comparative, characteristics, structural and morphological. The study identified key zoonym models, features and functions, according to forms of analysis, was created a practical basis and vocabulary minimum. Article materials were presented at international student scientific conferences. Field of application: teaching practice, preparation of a number of special courses, works writing, dictionaries compiling. It is planned to further study in other languages

Deep Teaching: Materials for Teaching Machine and Deep Learning

[EN] Machine learning (ML) is considered to be hard because it is relatively complicated in comparison to other topics of computer science. The reason is that machine learning is based heavily on mathematics and abstract concepts. This results in an entry barrier for students: Most students want to avoid such difficult topics in elective courses or self-study. In the project Deep.Teaching we address these issues: We motivate by selected applications and support courses as well as self-study by giving practical exercises for different topics in machine learning. The teaching material, provided as jupyter notebooks, consists of theoretical and programming sections. For didactical reasons, we designed programming exercises such that the students have to deeply understand the concepts and principles before they can start to implement a solution. We provide all necessary boilerplate code such that the students can primarily focus on the educational objectives of the exercises. We used different ways to give feedback for self-study: obscured solutions for mathematical results, software tests with assert statements, and graphical illustrations of sample solutions. All of the material is published under a permissive license. Developing jupyter notebooks collaboratively for educational purposes poses some problems. We address these issues and provide solutions/best practices. The project Deep.Teaching is funded by the German National Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), project number 01IS17056.Herta, C.; Voigt, B.; Baumann, P.; Strohmenger, K.; Jansen, C.; Fischer, O.; Zhang, G.... Since medieval texts are not treated enough in school, lecturers working in school and university presented their projects, ideas and experiences concerning the implementation of German-mediavistic contents in German school lessons during the conference “Heroes in School” in October 2014. The topics concern general reflection about the profitability of medieval literature in school, concrete lesson plans, the implementation in Rudolf Steiner schools, the integration of seminars in university that deal with the work in school etc. All articles demonstrate that the integration of medieval literature in school worth the effort – also in the 21st century
