Digital Urban - The Visual City
Nothing in the city is experienced by itself for a cityâs perspicacity is the sum of its surroundings. To paraphrase Lynch (1960), at every instant, there is more than we can see and hear. This is the reality of the physical city, and thus in order to replicate the visual experience of the city within digital space, the space itself must convey to the user a sense of place. This is what we term the âVisual Cityâ, a visually recognisable city built out of the digital equivalent of bricks and mortar, polygons, textures, and most importantly data. Recently there has been a revolution in the production and distribution of digital artefacts which represent the visual city. Digital city software that was once in the domain of high powered personal computers, research labs and professional software are now in the domain of the public-at-large through both the web and low-end home computing. These developments have gone hand in hand with the re-emergence of geography and geographic location as a way of tagging information to non-proprietary web-based software such as Google Maps, Google Earth, Microsoftâs Virtual Earth, ESRIâs ArcExplorer, and NASAâs World Wind, amongst others. The move towards âdigital earthsâ for the distribution of geographic information has, without doubt, opened up a widespread demand for the visualization of our environment where the emphasis is now on the third dimension. While the third dimension is central to the development of the digital or visual city, this is not the only way the city can be visualized for a number of emerging tools and âmashupsâ are enabling visual data to be tagged geographically using a cornucopia of multimedia systems. We explore these social, textual, geographical, and visual technologies throughout this chapter
A Test for Large-Scale Systematic Errors in Maps of Galactic Reddening
Accurate maps of Galactic reddening are important for a number of
applications, such as mapping the peculiar velocity field in the nearby
Universe. Of particular concern are systematic errors which vary slowly as a
function of position on the sky, as these would induce spurious bulk flow. We
have compared the reddenings of Burstein & Heiles (BH) and those of Schlegel,
Finkbeiner & Davis (SFD) to independent estimates of the reddening, for
Galactic latitudes |b| > 10. Our primary source of Galactic reddening estimates
comes from comparing the difference between the observed B-V colors of
early-type galaxies, and the predicted B-V color determined from the B-V--Mg_2
relation. We have fitted a dipole to the residuals in order to look for
large-scale systematic deviations. There is marginal evidence for a dipolar
residual in the comparison between the SFD maps and the observed early-type
galaxy reddenings. If this is due to an error in the SFD maps, then it can be
corrected with a small (13%) multiplicative dipole term. We argue, however,
that this difference is more likely to be due to a small (0.01 mag.) systematic
error in the measured B-V colors of the early-type galaxies. This
interpretation is supported by a smaller, independent data set (globular
cluster and RR Lyrae stars), which yields a result inconsistent with the
early-type galaxy residual dipole. BH reddenings are found to have no
significant systematic residuals, apart from the known problem in the region

Information Rich 3D Computer Modeling of Urban Environments
We are living in an increasingly information rich society. Geographical Information Systems now allow us to precisely tag information to specific features, objects and locations. The Internet is enabling much of this information to be accessed by a whole spectrum of users. At CASA we are attempting to push this technology towards a three-dimensional GIS, that works across the Internet and can represent significant chunks of a large city. We believe that the range of possible uses for such technology is diverse, although we feel that urban planning is an area that can benefit greatly. An opportunity to push this âplanning technologyâ arose when CASA won a tender from Hackney Council to develop a dynamic website for community participation in the process of regenerating the Woodberry Down Estate. This is a run down part of northeast London that is undergoing a major redevelopment. CASA has developed a system that not only informs the local residents about the redevelopment process but it also enables them to use dynamic visualisations of the âbefore and after effectsâ of different plans, and then to discuss and vote on the variety of options
Visual communication in urban planning and urban design
This report documents the current status of visual communication in urban design and planning. Visual communication is examined through discussion of standalone and network media, specifically concentrating on visualisation on the World Wide Web(WWW).Firstly, we examine the use of Solid and Geometric Modelling for visualising urban planning and urban design. This report documents and compares examples of the use of Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) and proprietary WWW based Virtual Reality modelling software. Examples include the modelling of Bath and Glasgow using both VRML 1.0 and 2.0. A review is carried out on the use of Virtual Worldsand their role in visualising urban form within multi-user environments. The use of Virtual Worlds is developed into a case study of the possibilities and limitations of Virtual Internet Design Arenas (ViDAs), an initiative undertaken at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London. The use of Virtual Worlds and their development towards ViDAs is seen as one of the most important developments in visual communication for urban planning and urban design since the development plan.Secondly, photorealistic media in the process of communicating plans is examined.The process of creating photorealistic media is documented, examples of the Virtual Streetscape and Wired Whitehall Virtual Urban Interface System are provided. The conclusion is drawn that although the use of photo-realistic media on the WWW provides a way to visually communicate planning information, its use is limited. The merging of photorealistic media and solid geometric modelling is reviewed in the creation of Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality is seen to provide an important step forward in the ability to quickly and easily visualise urban planning and urban design information.Thirdly, the role of visual communication of planning data through GIS is examined interms of desktop, three dimensional and Internet based GIS systems. The evolution to Internet GIS is seen as a critical component in the development of virtual cities which will allow urban planners and urban designers to visualise and model the complexity of the built environment in networked virtual reality.Finally a viewpoint is put forward of the Virtual City, linking Internet GIS with photorealistic multi-user Virtual Worlds. At present there are constraints on how far virtual cities can be developed, but a view is provided on how these networked virtual worlds are developing to aid visual communication in urban planning and urban design
Dynamics of small trapped one-dimensional Fermi gas under oscillating magnetic fields
Deterministic preparation of an ultracold harmonically trapped
one-dimensional Fermi gas consisting of a few fermions has been realized by the
Heidelberg group. Using Floquet formalism, we study the time dynamics of two-
and three-fermion systems in a harmonic trap under an oscillating magnetic
field. The oscillating magnetic field produces a time-dependent interaction
strength through a Feshbach resonance. We explore the dependence of these
dynamics on the frequency of the oscillating magnetic field for
non-interacting, weakly interacting, and strongly interacting systems. We
identify the regimes where the system can be described by an effective
two-state model and an effective three-state model. We find an unbounded
coupling to all excited states at the infinitely strong interaction limit and
several simple relations that characterize the dynamics. Based on our findings,
we propose a technique for driving transition from the ground state to the
excited states using an oscillating magnetic field.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
