    Suppression of the Charge-Density-Wave State in Sr10_{10}Ca4_{4}Cu24_{24}O41_{41} by External Pressure

    The influence of external pressure on the charge-density-wave (CDW) ground state of the quasi-one-dimensional two-leg ladder compound Sr10_{10}Ca4_{4}Cu24_{24}O41_{41} has been studied by optical reflectivity measurements as a function of temperature (10 - 300~K) and pressure PP (0.3 - 4.3~GPa) over the spectral range 580 - 6000 cm1^1. With increasing pressure the CDW transition temperature TCDWT_{CDW} decreases with the linear pressure coefficient ≈\approx-70~K/GPa, and above ≈\approx3~GPa the CDW phase is suppressed at all temperatures. This behavior is similar to that in compounds Sr14−x_{14-x}Cax_xCu24_{24}O41_{41} with increasing Ca content xx at ambient pressure, with the simple scaling x≈3⋅P(GPa)x \approx 3\cdot P(GPa). The size of the CDW gap decreases with increasing pressure, whereas the dimensionality of the high-temperature insulating phase in Sr10_{10}Ca4_{4}Cu24_{24}O41_{41} within the ladder plane is hardly affected by external pressure.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys.     A stacking method to study the gamma-ray emission of source samples based on the co-adding of Fermi LAT count maps

    We present a stacking method that makes use of co-added maps of gamma-ray counts produced from data taken with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. Sources with low integrated gamma-ray fluxes that are not detected individually may become detectable when their corresponding count maps are added. The combined data set is analyzed with a maximum likelihood method taking into account the contribution from point-like and diffuse background sources. For both simulated and real data, detection significance and integrated gamma-ray flux are investigated for different numbers of stacked sources using the public Fermi Science Tools for analysis and data preparation. The co-adding is done such that potential source signals add constructively, in contrast to the signals from background sources, which allows the stacked data to be described with simply structured models. We show, for different scenarios, that the stacking method can be used to increase the cumulative significance of a sample of sources and to characterize the corresponding gamma-ray emission.     Block-Transitive Designs in Affine Spaces

    This paper deals with block-transitive tt-(v,k,λ)(v,k,\lambda) designs in affine spaces for large tt, with a focus on the important index λ=1\lambda=1 case. We prove that there are no non-trivial 5-(v,k,1)(v,k,1) designs admitting a block-transitive group of automorphisms that is of affine type. Moreover, we show that the corresponding non-existence result holds for 4-(v,k,1)(v,k,1) designs, except possibly when the group is one-dimensional affine.     Persistent currents in normal metal rings

    The authors have measured the magnetic response of 33 individual cold mesoscopic gold rings, one ring at a time. The response of some sufficiently small rings has a component that is periodic in the flux through the ring and is attributed to a persistent current. Its period is close to h/e, and its sign and amplitude vary between rings. The amplitude distribution agrees well with predictions for the typical h/e current in diffusive rings. The temperature dependence of the amplitude, measured for four rings, is also consistent with theory. These results disagree with previous measurements of three individual metal rings that showed a much larger periodic response than expected. The use of a scanning SQUID microscope enabled in situ measurements of the sensor background. A paramagnetic linear susceptibility and a poorly understood anomaly around zero field are attributed to defect spins.Comment: Journal version. 4+ pages, 3 figures.     Experimentally Feasible Security Check for n-qubit Quantum Secret Sharing

    In this article we present a general security strategy for quantum secret sharing (QSS) protocols based on the HBB scheme presented by Hillery, Bu\v{z}ek and Berthiaume [Phys. Rev A \textbf{59}, 1829 (1999)]. We focus on a generalization of the HBB protocol to nn communication parties thus including nn-partite GHZ states. We show that the multipartite version of the HBB scheme is insecure in certain settings and impractical when going to large nn. To provide security for such QSS schemes in general we use the framework presented by some of the authors [M. Huber, F. Minert, A. Gabriel, B. C. Hiesmayr, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 210501 (2010)] to detect certain genuine nn partite entanglement between the communication parties.     Lorentz invariance of entanglement classes in multipartite systems

    We analyze multipartite entanglement in systems of spin-1/2 particles from a relativistic perspective. General conditions which have to be met for any classification of multipartite entanglement to be Lorentz invariant are derived, which contributes to a physical understanding of entanglement classification. We show that quantum information in a relativistic setting requires the partition of the Hilbert space into particles to be taken seriously. Furthermore, we study exemplary cases and show how the spin and momentum entanglement transforms relativistically in a multipartite setting.Comment: v2: 5 pages, 4 figures, minor changes to main body, journal references update
