    Voice Conversion Based on Cross-Domain Features Using Variational Auto Encoders

    An effective approach to non-parallel voice conversion (VC) is to utilize deep neural networks (DNNs), specifically variational auto encoders (VAEs), to model the latent structure of speech in an unsupervised manner. A previous study has confirmed the ef- fectiveness of VAE using the STRAIGHT spectra for VC. How- ever, VAE using other types of spectral features such as mel- cepstral coefficients (MCCs), which are related to human per- ception and have been widely used in VC, have not been prop- erly investigated. Instead of using one specific type of spectral feature, it is expected that VAE may benefit from using multi- ple types of spectral features simultaneously, thereby improving the capability of VAE for VC. To this end, we propose a novel VAE framework (called cross-domain VAE, CDVAE) for VC. Specifically, the proposed framework utilizes both STRAIGHT spectra and MCCs by explicitly regularizing multiple objectives in order to constrain the behavior of the learned encoder and de- coder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CD- VAE framework outperforms the conventional VAE framework in terms of subjective tests.Comment: Accepted to ISCSLP 201

    Spatial trends of noncollinear exchange coupling mediated by itinerant carriers with different Fermi surfaces

    We study the exchange coupling mediated by itinerant carriers with spin-orbit interaction by both analytic and numeric approaches. The mediated exchange coupling is noncollinear and its spatial trends depend on the Fermi-surface topology of the itinerant carriers. Taking Rashba interaction as an example, the exchange coupling is similar to the conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type in weak coupling. On the other hand, in the strong coupling, the spiral interaction dominates. In addition, inclusion of finite spin relaxation always makes the noncollinear spiral exchange interaction dominant.     A SOCIOECONOMIC APPROACH TO ASSESSING PRICE COMPETITION BETWEEN PRIVATE LABELS AND NATIONAL BRANDS: THE CASE OF SHREDDED CHEESE

    An LA/AIDS model is developed to estimate demand elasticities for packages of 8-oz shredded cheese for higher- and lower-income consumers. Data used in this study are scanner data for six supermarket stores in two distinct socioeconomic areas. Results show that: (1) lower-income shoppers are more price-sensitive than higher-income shoppers for both private labels and national brands; (2) compared with private labels, consumers are very sensitive to national brands price changes even in higher-income areas; (3) cross-price elasticities between private labels and national brands are all positive, i.e., private labels and national brands are substitutes in both lower- and higher-income stores; and (4) the number of promoted items does not have a statistically significant impact on sales; instead, the percentage of price discount affects sales for both private labels and national brands.Demand and Price Analysis,

    Avian Influenza Threat and its Potential Impact on Demand for Chicken and Eggs

    A highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza (AI) has been confirmed in 420 human cases and has caused 257 deaths in the world starting from 2003. Using face-to-face interviews, our data were collected by utilizing a stratified sampling scheme following the distribution of gender and age in three major metropolitan areas in Taiwan, including Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. The questionnaire was designed to retrieve information including AI knowledge, risk perceptions, and behavioral changes of two types of consumers, primary shoppers and general consumers. In total, 501 primary shoppers and 505 general consumers completed the survey in June 2007 and were recorded for analysis.     Assessing the Effects of Acupuncture by Comparing Needling the Hegu Acupoint and Needling Nearby Nonacupoints by Spectral Analysis of Microcirculatory Laser Doppler Signals

    We aimed to assess the effects of acupuncture by analyzing the frequency content of skin blood-flow signals simultaneously recorded at the Hegu acupoint and two nearby nonacupoints following acupuncture stimulation (AS). Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) signals were measured in male healthy volunteers in two groups of experiments: needling the Hegu acupoint (n = 13) and needling a nearby nonacupoint (control experiment; n = 10). Each experiment involved recording a 20 min baseline-data sequence and two sets of effects data recorded 0–20 and 50–70 min after stopping AS. Wavelet transform with Morlet mother wavelet was applied to the measured LDF signals. Needling the Hegu acupoint significantly increased the blood flow, significantly decreased the relative energy contribution at 0.02–0.06 Hz and significantly increased the relative energy contribution at 0.4–1.6 Hz at Hegu, but induced no significant changes at the nonacupoints. Also, needling a nearby nonacupoint had no effect in any band at any site. This is the first time that spectral analysis has been used to investigate the microcirculatory blood-flow responses induced by AS, and has revealed possible differences in sympathetic nerve activities between needling the Hegu acupoint and its nearby nonacupoint. One possible weakness of the present design is that different De-Qi feelings following AS could lead to nonblind experimental setup, which may bias the comparison between needling Hegu and its nearby nonacupoint. Our results suggest that the described noninvasive method can be used to evaluate sympathetic control of peripheral vascular activity, which might be useful for studying the therapeutic effects of AS

    A statistical reconstruction algorithm for positronium lifetime imaging using time-of-flight positron emission tomography

    Positron emission tomography (PET) has been widely used for the diagnosis of serious diseases including cancer and Alzheimer's disease, based on the uptake of radiolabelled molecules that target certain pathological signatures. Recently, a novel imaging mode known as positronium lifetime imaging (PLI) has been shown possible with time-of-flight (TOF) PET as well. PLI is also of practical interest because it can provide complementary disease information reflecting conditions of the tissue microenvironment via mechanisms that are independent of tracer uptake. However, for the present practical systems that have a finite TOF resolution, the PLI reconstruction problem has yet to be fully formulated for the development of accurate reconstruction algorithms. This paper addresses this challenge by developing a statistical model for the PLI data and deriving from it a maximum-likelihood algorithm for reconstructing lifetime images alongside the uptake images. By using realistic computer simulation data, we show that the proposed algorithm can produce quantitatively accurate lifetime images.Comment: Submitted to IEEE-TPRM
