Breakdown Characteristics of Varistor Ceramics
Breakdown characteristics are of great importance for varistor ceramics, which largely depend on Schottky barriers at grain boundaries. In order to enhance breakdown performance for meeting the requirement of device miniaturization, different doping methods are introduced to not only restrict grain size from additional phase but also manipulate defect structure of Schottky barrier at grain boundaries from substitution. Distribution of barriers is another key point affecting breakdown characteristics in varistor ceramics. Dimensional effect, which is detected in not only ZnO ceramics but also CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics, is practically and theoretically found to be closely correlated with uniformity of grains. As a result, breakdown characteristics of varistors are dominated by combination effect of single barrier performance and spatial barrier distribution. In this chapter, enhanced breakdown field in CaxSr1−xCu3Ti4O12 ceramics, in situ synthesized CaCu3Ti4O12-CuAl2O4 ceramics, and CaCu3Ti4O12-Y2/3Cu3Ti4O12 composite ceramics are investigated from the aspect of Schottky barriers at grain boundaries. In addition, dimensional effect is found in both ZnO and CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics, which are investigated from grain size distribution through theoretical and experimental analysis
Distribution of Heavy Metals in Core Sediments from Baihua Lake
AbstractIn the present research, five core sediments from Baihua Lake, a man-made reservoir located in the karst area on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in China, were analyzed to study the distribution, origin and contamination of three selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn and Mn). The results showed that the concentrations of these heavy metals in sediments varied from different sampling locations and layers. The average concentrations of these heavy metals at the same sampling location followed the order of Mn>Zn>Cu. The mean concentrations of Zn and Mn in the samples at the depth of 0-5cm and the depth of 5-10cm of the core sediments were higher than those in the other layers. All of Cu, Zn and Mn presented similar distribution characteristics at sampling site CFZ, and different distribution characteristics from the other four sampling locations. A statistical analysis indicated that there were some correlations between the concentrations of these three heavy metals and other studied six elements occurring in the core sediment samples. Three components were obtained with principal component analysis (PCA) analysis of heavy metals concentrations in core sediment samples
The stability evaluation of clay tunnels via the non-linear deterioration of physical and mechanical properties of surrounding rocks
Simple, fast, and reliable methods for the stability evaluation of tunnels can facilitate the construction and development of tunneling projects. The problems related to tunnel stability at this stage can be well analyzed via theoretical analysis method, model test method, or numerical analysis method. On the other hand, those methods are hard to be effectively analyzed these projects with higher importance, shorter decision and design period, and more urgent construction period. This paper proposed research works on the stability evaluation of clay tunnels. Firstly, a state function with the variables of stress and strain state is presented to predict the stress and strain states of surrounding rocks caused by tunnel excavation, which characterize the physical-mechanical state of surrounding rocks (also called stability state). Secondly, the non-linear deterioration of the physical and mechanical properties of surrounding rocks will be simulated, and the expressions and calculation methods of the tunnel stability reserve factor will be yielded. Finally, the results of the proposed method were compared with the strength reduction method and the limit equilibrium method with a clay tunnel example. The comparison between the three feature points of the arch crown, sidewall, and arch bottom showed that the stability reserve factor of the clay tunnel was smaller than those of the strength reduction method and the limit equilibrium method. The values of limit displacement obtained by the proposed method were closer to the field monitoring data than that of the strength reduction method. Therefore, this study could be better applied to the stability evaluation of clay tunnels
The association between higher FFAs and high residual platelet reactivity among CAD patients receiving clopidogrel therapy
BackgroundMetabolic abnormalities are associated with the occurrence, severity, and poor prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD), some of which affect the antiplatelet efficacy of clopidogrel. Free fatty acids (FFAs) is a biomarker for metabolic abnormalities, and elevated FFAs is observed among CAD patients. Whether FFAs enhances residual platelet reactivity induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP) while using clopidogrel was unknown. The purpose of our study is exploring the issue.MethodCurrent study included 1,277 CAD patients using clopidogrel and used logistic regression to detect whether the higher level of FFAs is associated with high residual platelet reactivity (HRPR). We additionally performed subgroup and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the stability of the results. We defined HRPR as ADP-induced platelet inhibition rate (ADPi) < 50% plus ADP-induced maximum amplitude (MAADP) > 47 mm.Results486 patients (38.1%) showed HRPR. The proportion of HRPR among patients with higher FFAs (>0.445 mmol/L) is greater than among patients with lower FFAs (46.4% vs. 32.6%, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that higher FFAs (>0.445 mmol/L) is independently associated with HRPR (adjusted OR = 1.745, 95% CI, 1.352–2.254). After subgroup and sensitivity analyses, the results remained robust.ConclusionThe higher level of FFAs enhances residual platelet reactivity induced by ADP and is independently associated with clopidogrel HRPR
Source Apportionment of Ambient Aerosols during a Winter Pollution Episode in Yinchuan by Using Single-Particle Mass Spectrometry
For a winter pollution episode in Yinchuan, a city in Northwestern China, ambient aerosols were characterized using a real-time single-particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS). More than 160,000 individual particles analyzed with the SPAMS were classified into eight major categories on the basis of their mass spectral patterns: traffic emissions, biomass burning, dust, coal burning, industrial emissions, secondary inorganic, cooking, and others, all of which contribute to fine particles. The results revealed that coal burning (29.6%) and traffic emissions (23.4%) were the main sources during the monitoring period. Industrial emissions and secondary inorganic aerosols accounted for 16.6% and 14.0%, respectively. The SPAMS data indicated that the number concentration of the eight types of particles was markedly different in the different pollution cases, and higher number concentrations were discovered more often during pollution episodes. The three pollution cases were mainly caused by the accumulation of fine particles, mainly from traffic emissions, industrial emissions, and increased secondary inorganic conversion
High Breakdown Field CaCu3Ti4O12 Ceramics: Roles of the Secondary Phase and of Sr Doping
In this work, two methods of CaCu3Ti4O12-CuAl2O4 composite and SrCu3Ti4O12-CaCu3Ti4O12 composite were prepared to improve the breakdown field in CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics. CaCu3Ti4O12-0.5CuAl2O4 and 0.4SrCu3Ti4O12-0.6CaCu3Ti4O12 samples with proper sintering conditions were found to have greatly enhanced breakdown fields of more than 20 kV·cm−1 compared to the ordinary value of 1–2 kV·cm−1 in CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics. In addition, reduced dielectric loss tangent of these samples remained about 0.1 at a low frequency of 0.1 Hz, indicating superior dielectric properties. No abnormal grain growth was found in either composite with a high breakdown field, which was attributed to the pining effect and consumption of Cu-rich phase at grain boundaries. Under analysis of the relaxation process by electric modulus, compared to conventional CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics, interstitial Ali··· and increasing interfaces were responsible for variation in activation energy in CaCu3Ti4O12-0.5CuAl2O4 composites, while the integrated action of a strong solid solution effect and weak Sr-stretching effect contributed to the elevated potential barrier height and enhanced breakdown field in 0.4SrCu3Ti4O12-0.6CaCu3Ti4O12 composites
Projecting global urban land expansion and heat island intensification through 2050
Urban populations are expected to increase by 2–3 billion by 2050, but we have limited understanding of how future global urban expansion will affect urban heat island (UHI) and hence change the geographic distributions of extreme heat risks. Here we develop spatially explicit probabilistic global projections of UHI intensification due to urban land expansion through 2050. Our projections show that urban land areas are expected to expand by 0.6–1.3 million km ^2 between 2015 and 2050, an increase of 78%–171% over the urban footprint in 2015. This urban land expansion will result in average summer daytime and nighttime warming in air temperature of 0.5 °C–0.7 °C, up to ∼3 °C in some locations. This warming is on average about half, and sometimes up to two times, as strong as that caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (multi-model ensemble average projections in Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5). This extra urban expansion-induced warming, presented here, will increase extreme heat risks for about half of the future urban population, primarily in the tropical Global South, where existing forecasts already indicate stronger GHG emissions-warming and lack of adaptive capacity. In these vulnerable urban areas, policy interventions to restrict or redistribute urban expansion and planning strategies to mitigate UHIs are needed to reduce the wide ranges of impacts on human health, energy system, urban ecosystem, and infrastructures

Accurate Fatigue Detection Based on Multiple Facial Morphological Features
Fatigue driving is becoming a dangerous and common situation for drivers and represents a significant factor for fatal car crashes. Machine learning researchers utilized various sources of information to detect driver’s drowsiness. This study integrated the morphological features of both the eye and mouth regions and extensively investigated the fatigue detection problem from the aspects of feature numbers, classifiers, and modeling parameters. The proposed algorithm REcognizing the Drowsy Expression (REDE) achieved the 10-fold cross-validation accuracy 96.07% and took about 21 milliseconds to process one image. REDE outperformed the existing four studies on both fatigue detection accuracy and running time and is fast enough to handle the task of real-time fatigue monitoring captured at the rate of 30 frames per second. To further facilitate the research of fatigue detection, the raw data and the feature matrix were also released
