    Green's function method for single-particle resonant states in relativistic mean field theory

    Relativistic mean field theory is formulated with the Green's function method in coordinate space to investigate the single-particle bound states and resonant states on the same footing. Taking the density of states for free particle as a reference, the energies and widths of single-particle resonant states are extracted from the density of states without any ambiguity. As an example, the energies and widths for single-neutron resonant states in 120^{120}Sn are compared with those obtained by the scattering phase-shift method, the analytic continuation in the coupling constant approach, the real stabilization method and the complex scaling method. Excellent agreements are found for the energies and widths of single-neutron resonant states.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    Metamagnetic Transition in Na0.85_{0.85}CoO2_2 Single Crystals

    We report the magnetization, specific heat and transport measurements of high quality Na0.85_{0.85}CoO2_2 single crystals in applied magnetic fields up to 14T. In high temperatures, the system is in a paramagnetic phase. It undergoes a magnetic phase transition below about 20K. When the field is applied along the c-axis, the measurement data of magnetization, specific heat and magnetoresistance reveal a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic state to a quasi-ferromagnetic state at about 8T in low temperatures. However, no transition is observed in the magnetization measurements up to 14T when the field is applied perpendicular to the c-axis. The low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Na0.85_{0.85}CoO2_2 is determined.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Angular-dependent Magnetoresistance Oscillations in Na0.48_{0.48}CoO2_{2} Single Crystal

    We report measurements of the c-axis angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) for a Na0.48_{0.48}CoO2_{2} single crystal, with a magnetic field of 10 T rotating within Co-O planes. Below the metal-insulator transition temperature induced by the charge ordering, the oscillation of the AMR is dominated by a two-fold rotational symmetry. The amplitudes of the oscillation corresponding to the four- and six-fold rotational symmetries are distinctive in low temperatures, but they merge into the background simultaneously at about 25 K. The six-fold oscillation originates naturally from the lattice symmetry. The observation of the four-fold rotational symmetry is consistent with the picture proposed by Choy, et al., that the Co lattice in the charge ordered state will split into two orthorhombic sublattice with one occupied by Co3+^{3+} ions and the other by Co4+^{4+} ions. We have also measured the c-axis AMR for Na0.35_{0.35}CoO2_{2} and Na0.85_{0.85}CoO2_{2} single crystals, and found no evidence for the existence of two- and four-fold symmetries.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures.     Coexistence and competition of multiple charge-density-wave orders in rare-earth tri-telluride RTe3

    The occurrences of collective quantum states, such as superconductivity (SC) and charge- or spin-densitywaves (CDWs or SDWs), are among the most fascinating phenomena in solids. To date much effort has been made to explore the interplay between different orders, yet little is known about the relationship of multiple orders of the same type. Here we report optical spectroscopy study on CDWs in the rare-earth tri-telluride compounds RTe3 (R = rare earth elements). Besides the prior reported two CDW orders, the study reveals unexpectedly the presence of a third CDW order in the series which evolves systematically with the size of R element. With increased chemical pressure, the first and third CDW orders are both substantially suppressed and compete with the second one by depleting the low energy spectral weight. A complete phase diagram for the multiple CDW orders in this series is established.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    The Damping Tail of CMB Anisotropies

    By decomposing the damping tail of CMB anisotropies into a series of transfer functions representing individual physical effects, we provide ingredients that will aid in the reconstruction of the cosmological model from small-scale CMB anisotropy data. We accurately calibrate the model-independent effects of diffusion and reionization damping which provide potentially the most robust information on the background cosmology. Removing these effects, we uncover model-dependent processes such as the acoustic peak modulation and gravitational enhancement that can help distinguish between alternate models of structure formation and provide windows into the evolution of fluctuations at various stages in their growth.Comment: 24pgs, aaspp4, 10 figs. included; supporting material (e.g. color figures) at http://www.sns.ias.edu/~whu/pub.htm

    Description of hysteretic current-voltage characteristics of SNS junctions

    Simplified model for current-voltage characteristics of weak links is suggested. It is based on an approach considering the multiple Andreev reflection in metallic Josephson junction. The model allows to calculate current-voltage characteristics of the superconductor - normal metal - superconductor junctions with different thicknesses of normal layer at different temperatures. A hysteretic peculiarity of V(I)V(I) dependence is described as result of the negative differential resistance.
