How does boundary-spanning search matter in China’s new technology venture? The role of external relationship and internal competence

Get PDF
[[abstract]]Following on the resource-advantage theory, this study advances existing research by examining what configuration of a new venture’s boundary-spanning search can obtain successful venture performance and how a founding team’s external relationship and the internal firm competences shapes the relationship between the distant search and new venture performance. The paper is based on a questionnaire survey/analysis of a sample of 178 new ventures from China. This paper offers insight to entrepreneurs with regard to the importance of building external managerial ties and developing idiosyncratic internal competences on boundary-spanning search. In addition, our study also reveals that the effectiveness of supply-, demand- and spatial-side boundary-spanning search on venture performance depends upon investing resource at a rational level.[[journaltype]]國外[[incitationindex]]SSCI[[ispeerreviewed]]Y[[booktype]]電子版[[countrycodes]]US

Determinants of property-liability insurer retention: Evidence from Taiwan insurance industry

Get PDF
[[abstract]]The determination of an appropriate retention level is an important decision for insurers since the results show the influence on risk exposure and firm profitability. In this study, we examine the determinants of insurer retentions for property-liability insurance companies in the Taiwan insurance industry. Three models are estimated in this study including ordinary least squares regression and two panel data models, fixed effects model and random effects model. The results show underwriting risk, premium growth and listed companies are negatively related to insurer retention, while liabilities to liquidity assets ratio and business concentration have a positive impact on insurer retention. In addition, when macroeconomic factors are taken into account, we also find that they have significant influence of return on investment, inflation rate and interest rate changes on insurer retention. Our results have practical implications for the property-liability insurance operational business and competent authorities.[[incitationindex]]SSCI[[booktype]]紙

Oxygen Vacancy Induced Ferromagnetism in V2_2O5x_{5-x}

Full text link
{\it Ab initio} calculations within density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation have been performed to study the effects of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure and magnetism in undoped V2_2O5x_{5-x} (0<x<0.50 < x < 0.5). It is found that the introduction of oxygen vacancies would induce ferromagnetism in V2_2O5x_{5-x} with the magnetization being proportional to the O vacancy concentration xx. The calculated electronic structure reveals that the valence electrons released by the introduction of oxygen vacancies would occupy mainly the neighboring V dxyd_{xy}-dominant band which then becomes spin-polarized due to intra-atomic exchange interaction, thereby giving rise to the half-metallic ferromagnetism.Comment: To be published as a Letter in J. Electroencephalography and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in neonatal citrullinemia

Get PDF
The authors present a case of citrullinemia with a genotype of argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS1), c.380 G>A (p.R127Q)/c.380 G>A (p.R127Q), in two alleles. A 3-day-old female infant presented with status epilepticus and coma. Laboratory data showed hyperammonemia and marked lactic acidosis in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid; electroencephalography showed severely suppressed cerebral activity and focal paroxysmal volleys of slow and sharp waves (< 1Hz) over the left hemisphere. Real-time transcranial Doppler ultrasonography showed a brain edema and high peaked systolic and low diastolic flows in basal, anterior, and middle cerebral arteries; however, immediately after a blood exchange transfusion, systolic flows were lower and diastolic flows were higher. The resistance indices were significantly different (means: 0.58 vs. 0.37; p=0.01). The patient was placed on diet therapy. After six blood exchange transfusions and peritoneal dialysis, her neurologic examination results and serum ammonia and lactate values were normal. The authors found that electroencephalography and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography were useful for the diagnosis and follow-up treatment of neonatal citrullinemia

Staggered Currents in the Vortex Core

Full text link
We study the electronic structure of the vortex core in the cuprates using the U(1) slave-boson mean-field wavefunctions and their Gutzwiller projection. We conclude that there exists local orbital antiferromagnetic order in the core near optimal doping. We compare the results with that of BCS theory and analyze the spatial dependence of the local tunneling density of states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Effectiveness and response differences of a multidisciplinary workplace health promotion program for healthcare workers

Get PDF
BackgroundWorkplace health promotion (WHP) in the healthcare industry is an important yet challenging issue to address, given the high workload, heterogeneity of work activities, and long work hours of healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and response differences of a multidisciplinary WHP program conducted in HCWs.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included HCWs participating in a multidisciplinary WHP program in five healthcare facilities. The 20-week intervention included multiple easy-to-access 90-min exercise classes, one 15-min nutrition consultation, and behavioral education. Pre- and post-interventional anthropometrics, body composition, and physical fitness (PF) were compared with paired sample t-tests. Response differences across sex, age, weight status, and shiftwork status were analyzed with a generalized estimating equation.ResultsA total of 302 HCWs were analyzed. The intervention effectively improved all anthropometric (body mass index, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio), body composition (body fat percentage, muscle weight, visceral fat area), and PF (grip strength, high jump, sit-up, sit-and-reach, step test) parameters in all participants (all p < 0.05). Subgroup analyses revealed shift workers had a more significant mean reduction in body mass index than non-shift workers (adjusted p = 0.045). However, there was no significant response difference across sex, age, and weight subgroups.ConclusionThis study suggested that a multidisciplinary WHP program can improve anthropometric and PF profiles regardless of sex, age, and weight status for HCWs, and shifter workers might benefit more from the intervention

First- and Second-trimester Down Syndrome Screening: Current Strategies and Clinical Guidelines

Get PDF
SummaryDown syndrome (DS) is the most common human disease caused by a structural chromosome defect. The original screening test for DS was maternal age or a history of a previously affected infant. Maternal serum screening has been incorporated into routine prenatal checkup in Taiwan since 1994. We used free β-human chorionic gonadotropin and α-fetoprotein (double test) as the serum markers, and this was carried out between the 15 to 20th week of gestation. The overall detection rate was 56% and was compatible with studies of Caucasian populations. The impact of double tests in Taiwan has shown itself by a dramatic lowering of the rate of DS live birth from 0.63 before screening to 0.16 per 1,000 live births at present. However, because of its relatively low detection rate and poor cost-effectiveness, the double test is not justified as a routine screening tool currently. First-trimester combined test is now becoming more widely available and provides increased sensitivity when detecting DS; it has a detection rate of approximately 85% with a false-positive rate of 5%. Nuchal translucency measurement requires ongoing quality control and sufficient certificated obstetricians; therefore, first-trimester ultrasound is limited only in designated centers. The quadruple test, having comparable detection rate, should be considered for incorporation into second-trimester screening in Taiwan in the near future. Other screening approaches and combinations have also been utilized in the Western countries. In this review, we outline the various options with respect to DS screening and hope that this will provide practical information for physicians offering such screenings.
