A Hybrid Model for Soil-Foundation Compliance

    Get PDF
This paper describes a hybrid method that may be used to model the dynamic responses of multiple rectangular foundations resting on a homogeneous, viscoelastic stratum and excited by harmonic waves. The hybrid analysis described in this paper combines the dynamic stiffness and finite element methods. The method uses equivalent area disk loads for Green\u27s functions at the soil surface. The dynamic stiffness method is used to obtain the stiffness matrix of the soil medium and the finite element method is used to obtain the stiffness matrix of surface foundations. The stiffness of the entire soil-structure system can be obtained using a substructure approach by assembling the stiffnesses of the soil medium and the foundations. The stiffness of the surface foundations affects the dynamic behavior of the soil-foundation system, especially with respect to its vertical motion. The finite element method described in this paper is used to construct the stiffness of the surface foundations. Equivalent area disks are placed at discretized points on the interface between the foundations and stratum surface. The stratum compliance matrix is constructed using the Green functions for vertical and lateral disk loads. Implementation of this model for analyzing soil-foundation system is current underway

As the rapidly growing population of elderly people in the world that means they would be facing all challenges to their quality of life. As age increases, quality of life is often reported to decline. They are also at risk of mental illness, neurological disorder and more health problems affecting their quality of life. Depression is a common mental disorder among the elderly.  The objective of this study is to understand the relationship between depression and quality of life among the elderly in an Indonesian nursing home. This research use the descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design was applied. There were 114 elderly recruited by convenient sampling. The results of this study showed the mean age of the elderly was 71.2 at the time of data collection ranging from 65 to 76 years old. The variables associated with quality of life were age, gender, education, marital status, ethnicity, chronic disease, and depression status. Moreover, the study found that, as predictors, the variables that influenced the quality of life according to relevance were: age, depression status, and educational level. Age and depression status is recognized as significant predictors of the quality of life among the elderly in an Indonesian nursing home. The result of the study would serve as references to the future and related promotion for the same field of the stud

Effects of Chinese Education Style and Self-esteem in Adolescents’ Fashion Innovativeness and Conspicuous Consumption in Young Adults: A longitudinal study in Taiwan

With globalization and economic growth of Asian countries, many Western brands have attempted to better understand Asian consumers, and Chinese consumers in particular. Owing to globalization influence of Western media and economic growth, Chinese societies are in transition from non-consumerism to consumerism societies, where consumers are becoming more innovative and brand conscious than in past decades (Podoshen, Li, & Zhang, 2011)

End-to-end thiocyanato-bridged helical chain polymer and dichlorido-bridged copper(II) complexes with a hydrazone ligand: synthesis, characterisation by electron paramagnetic resonance and variable- temperature magnetic studies, and inhibitory effects on human colorectal carcinoma cells

The reactions of the tridentate hydrazone ligand, N’-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]acetohydrazide (HL), obtained by condensation of 2-acetylpyridine with acetic hyadrazide, with copper nitrate trihydrate in the presence of thiocyanate, or with CuCl2 produce two distinct coordination compounds, namely a one-dimensional helical coordination chain of [CuL(NCS)]n (1) units, and a doubly chlorido-bridged dinuclear complex [Cu2L2Cl2] (2) (where L=CH3C(O)=N − N=CCH3C5H4N). Single-crystal X-ray structural determination studies reveal that in complex 1, a deprotonated hydrazone ligand L- coordinates a copper(II) ion that is bridged to two neighbouring metal centres by SCN- anions, generating a one-dimensional helical coordination chain. In complex 2, two symmetry-related, adjacent copper(II) coordination entities are doubly chlorido-bridged, producing a dicopper entity with a Cu···Cu distance of 3.402 (1). The two coordination compounds have been fully characterised by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques including IR, UV– vis and electron paramagnetic resonance, and variable-temperature magnetic studies. The biological effects of 1 and 2 on the viability of human colorectal carcinoma cells (COLO-205 and HT-29) were evaluated using an MTT assay, and the results indicate that these complexes induce a decrease in cell-population growth of human colorectal carcinoma cells with apoptosis

Hydrodynamical Simulations of the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1097

NGC 1097 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy believed to be interacting with the elliptical galaxy NGC 1097A located to its northwest. It hosts a Seyfert 1 nucleus surrounded by a circumnuclear starburst ring. Two straight dust lanes connected to the ring extend almost continuously out to the bar. The other ends of the dust lanes attach to two main spiral arms. To provide a physical understanding of its structural and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal that many features of the gas morphology and kinematics can be reproduced provided that the gas flow is governed by a gravitational potential associated with a slowly rotating strong bar. By including the self-gravity of the gas disk in our calculation, we have found the starburst ring to be gravitationally unstable which is consistent with the observation in \citet{hsieh11}. Our simulations show that the gas inflow rate is 0.17 M_\sun yr−1^{-1} into the region within the starburst ring even after its formation, leading to the coexistence of both a nuclear ring and a circumnuclear disk.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the Ap

Candida lipolytica candidemia as a rare infectious complication of acute pancreatitis: A case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Candida lipolytica candidemia is a rare but an emerging pathogenic yeast infection in humans. It can gain access to the bloodstream through intravascular catheterization, especially through central venous catheters in immunocompromised or critically ill patients during hospitalization. In this report, we present a noncatheter-related C. lipolytica candidemia infection in an 84-year-old man who was admitted due to acute pancreatitis. The possible pathogenesis and management of C. lipolytica candidemia are highlighted. It was an unusual infectious complication of acute pancreatitis. Clinicians should be aware that such an opportunistic pathogen can lead to invasive candidemia infection. In clinical practice, systemic antifungal therapy and the removal of the potentially infected central venous catheter might be recommended for the treatment of C. lipolytica candidemia
