Surface Instability of Icicles
Quantitatively-unexplained stationary waves or ridges often encircle icicles.
Such waves form when roughly 0.1 mm-thick layers of water flow down the icicle.
These waves typically have a wavelength of 1cm approximately independent of
external temperature, icicle thickness, and the volumetric rate of water flow.
In this paper we show that these waves can not be obtained by naive
Mullins-Sekerka instability, but are caused by a quite new surface instability
related to the thermal diffusion and hydrodynamic effect of thin water flow.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Late
Effects of Supplemental Glutamine on Growth Performance, Plasma Parameters and LPS-induced Immune Response of Weaned Barrows after Castration
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of supplemental glutamine on growth performance, plasma parameters and LPS-induced immune response of weaned barrows after castration. In experiment 1, forty-eight weaned male piglets were used and fed maize and soybean meal diets supplemented with 0 (Control) or 2% L-Gln (Gln+) for 25 days. The results indicated that the Gln+ group tended to increase average daily gain compared to control in stages of days 7 to 14 and 0 to 25. The Gln+ had significantly better feed efficiency than the control group did during days 14 to 25 and 0 to 25. The plasma blood urea nitrogen and alkaline phosphatase contents of Gln+ group were higher than those of the control group on day 14 post-weaning. In experiment 2, sixteen weaned male piglets were injected with E. coli K88+ lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on day 14 post-weaning. The results showed that the Gln+ group had lower concentrations of plasma adrenocorticotrophic hormone and cortisol than the control group on day 14 pre-LPS challenge. In addition, Gln+ group had higher plasma IgG concentration than the control group for pre- or post-LPS challenged on day 14 post-weaning. In summary, dietary supplementation of Gin was able to alleviate the stressful condition and inflammation associated with castration in weaned barrows, and to improve their immunity and growth performance in the early starter stage
Qualitative Properties of Magnetic Fields in Scalar Field Cosmology
We study the qualitative properties of the class of spatially homogeneous
Bianchi VI_o cosmological models containing a perfect fluid with a linear
equation of state, a scalar field with an exponential potential and a uniform
cosmic magnetic field, using dynamical systems techniques. We find that all
models evolve away from an expanding massless scalar field model in which the
matter and the magnetic field are negligible dynamically. We also find that for
a particular range of parameter values the models evolve towards the usual
power-law inflationary model (with no magnetic field) and, furthermore, we
conclude that inflation is not fundamentally affected by the presence of a
uniform primordial magnetic field. We investigate the physical properties of
the Bianchi I magnetic field models in some detail.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures in REVTeX format. to appear in Phys. Rev.
Soil bacterial and fungal communities of six bahiagrass cultivars
Background Cultivars of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum FlĂŒggĂ©) are widely used for pasture in the Southeastern USA. Soil microbial communities are unexplored in bahiagrass and they may be cultivar-dependent, as previously proven for other grass species. Understanding the influence of cultivar selection on soil microbial communities is crucial as microbiome taxa have repeatedly been shown to be directly linked to plant performance. Objectives This study aimed to determine whether different bahiagrass cultivars interactively influence soil bacterial and fungal communities. Methods Six bahiagrass cultivars (âArgentineâ, âPensacolaâ, âSand Mountainâ, âTifton 9â, âTifQuikâ, and âUF-Riataâ) were grown in a randomized complete block design with four replicate plots of 4.6 Ă 1.8 m per cultivar in a Rhodic Kandiudults soil in Northwest Florida, USA. Three soil subsamples per replicate plot were randomly collected. Soil DNA was extracted and bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and fungal ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 genes were amplified and sequenced with one Illumina Miseq Nano. Results The soil bacterial and fungal community across bahiagrass cultivars showed similarities with communities recovered from other grassland ecosystems. Few differences in community composition and diversity of soil bacteria among cultivars were detected; none were detected for soil fungi. The relative abundance of sequences assigned to nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospira was greater under âSand Mountainâ than âUF-Riataâ. Indicator species analysis revealed that several bacterial and fungal indicators associated with either a single cultivar or a combination of cultivars are likely to be plant pathogens or antagonists. Conclusions Our results suggest a low impact of plant cultivar choice on the soil bacterial community composition, whereas the soil fungal community was unaffected. Shifts in the relative abundance of Nitrospira members in response to cultivar choice may have implications for soil N dynamics. The cultivars associated with presumptive plant pathogens or antagonists indicates that the ability of bahiagrass to control plant pathogens may be cultivar-dependent, however, physiological studies on plant-microbe interactions are required to confirm this presumption. We therefore suggest that future studies should explore the potential of different bahiagrass cultivars on plant pathogen control, particularly in sod-based crop rotation
Exact Hypersurface-Homogeneous Solutions in Cosmology and Astrophysics
A framework is introduced which explains the existence and similarities of
most exact solutions of the Einstein equations with a wide range of sources for
the class of hypersurface-homogeneous spacetimes which admit a Hamiltonian
formulation. This class includes the spatially homogeneous cosmological models
and the astrophysically interesting static spherically symmetric models as well
as the stationary cylindrically symmetric models. The framework involves
methods for finding and exploiting hidden symmetries and invariant submanifolds
of the Hamiltonian formulation of the field equations. It unifies, simplifies
and extends most known work on hypersurface-homogeneous exact solutions. It is
shown that the same framework is also relevant to gravitational theories with a
similar structure, like Brans-Dicke or higher-dimensional theories.Comment: 41 pages, REVTEX/LaTeX 2.09 file (don't use LaTeX2e !!!) Accepted for

Holographic Dark Energy Model and Scalar-Tensor Theories
We study the holographic dark energy model in a generalized scalar tensor
theory. In a universe filled with cold dark matter and dark energy, the effect
of potential of the scalar field is investigated in the equation of state
parameter. We show that for a various types of potentials, the equation of
state parameter is negative and transition from deceleration to acceleration
expansion of the universe is possible.Comment: 11 pages, no figure. To appear in General Relativity and Gravitatio
Spontaneous Creation of Inflationary Universes and the Cosmic Landscape
We study some gravitational instanton solutions that offer a natural
realization of the spontaneous creation of inflationary universes in the brane
world context in string theory. Decoherence due to couplings of higher
(perturbative) modes of the metric as well as matter fields modifies the
Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for de Sitter space. Generalizing this new
wavefunction to be used in string theory, we propose a principle in string
theory that hopefully will lead us to the particular vacuum we live in, thus
avoiding the anthropic principle. As an illustration of this idea, we give a
phenomenological analysis of the probability of quantum tunneling to various
stringy vacua. We find that the preferred tunneling is to an inflationary
universe (like our early universe), not to a universe with a very small
cosmological constant (i.e., like today's universe) and not to a 10-dimensional
uncompactified de Sitter universe. Such preferred solutions are interesting as
they offer a cosmological mechanism for the stabilization of extra dimensions
during the inflationary epoch.Comment: 52 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Added discussion on supercritical

Interacting entropy-corrected holographic dark energy with apparent horizon as an infrared cutoff
In this work we consider the entropy-corrected version of interacting
holographic dark energy (HDE), in the non-flat universe enclosed by apparent
horizon. Two corrections of entropy so-called logarithmic 'LEC' and power-law
'PLEC' in HDE model with apparent horizon as an IR-cutoff are studied. The
ratio of dark matter to dark energy densities , equation of state parameter
and deceleration parameter are obtained. We show that the cosmic
coincidence is satisfied for both interacting models. By studying the effect of
interaction in EoS parameter, we see that the phantom divide may be crossed and
also find that the interacting models can drive an acceleration expansion at
the present and future, while in non-interacting case, this expansion can
happen only at the early time. The graphs of deceleration parameter for
interacting models, show that the present acceleration expansion is preceded by
a sufficiently long period deceleration at past. Moreover, the thermodynamical
interpretation of interaction between LECHDE and dark matter is described. We
obtain a relation between the interaction term of dark components and thermal
fluctuation in a non-flat universe, bounded by the apparent horizon. In
limiting case, for ordinary HDE, the relation of interaction term versus
thermal fluctuation is also calculated.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, figures changed, some Ref. is added, changed

About Bianchi I with VSL
In this paper we study how to attack, through different techniques, a perfect
fluid Bianchi I model with variable G,c and Lambda, but taking into account the
effects of a -variable into the curvature tensor. We study the model under
the assumption,div(T)=0. These tactics are: Lie groups method (LM), imposing a
particular symmetry, self-similarity (SS), matter collineations (MC) and
kinematical self-similarity (KSS). We compare both tactics since they are quite
similar (symmetry principles). We arrive to the conclusion that the LM is too
restrictive and brings us to get only the flat FRW solution. The SS, MC and KSS
approaches bring us to obtain all the quantities depending on \int c(t)dt.
Therefore, in order to study their behavior we impose some physical
restrictions like for example the condition q<0 (accelerating universe). In
this way we find that is a growing time function and Lambda is a decreasing
time function whose sing depends on the equation of state, w, while the
exponents of the scale factor must satisfy the conditions
and
, i.e. for all equation of state relaxing in this way the
Kasner conditions. The behavior of depends on two parameters, the equation
of state and a parameter that controls the behavior of
therefore may be growing or decreasing. We also show that through
the Lie method, there is no difference between to study the field equations
under the assumption of a var affecting to the curvature tensor which the
other one where it is not considered such effects.Nevertheless, it is essential
to consider such effects in the cases studied under the SS, MC, and KSS
hypotheses.Comment: 29 pages, Revtex4, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space

Holographic dark energy in a non-flat universe with Granda-Oliveros cut-off
Motivated by Granda and Oliveros (GO) model, we generalize their work to the
non-flat case. We obtain the evolution of the dark energy density, the
deceleration and the equation of state parameters for the holographic dark
energy model in a non-flat universe with GO cut-off. In the limiting case of a
flat universe, i.e. , all results given in GO model are obtained.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
