The cosmological BCS mechanism and the Big Bang Singularity
We provide a novel mechanism that resolves the Big Bang Singularity present
in FRW space-times without the need for ghost fields. Building on the fact that
a four-fermion interaction arises in General Relativity when fermions are
covariantly coupled, we show that at early times the decrease in scale factor
enhances the correlation between pairs of fermions. This enhancement leads to a
BCS-like condensation of the fermions and opens a gap dynamically driving the
Hubble parameter to zero and results in a non-singular bounce, at least in
some special cases.Comment: replaced to match the journal versio
The Modulation of Multiple Phases Leading to the Modified KdV Equation
This paper seeks to derive the modified KdV (mKdV) equation using a novel
approach from systems generated from abstract Lagrangians that possess a
two-parameter symmetry group. The method to do uses a modified modulation
approach, which results in the mKdV emerging with coefficients related to the
conservation laws possessed by the original Lagrangian system. Alongside this,
an adaptation of the method of Kuramoto is developed, providing a simpler
mechanism to determine the coefficients of the nonlinear term. The theory is
illustrated using two examples of physical interest, one in stratified
hydrodynamics and another using a coupled Nonlinear Schr\"odinger model, to
illustrate how the criterion for the mKdV equation to emerge may be assessed
and its coefficients generated.Comment: 35 pages, 5 figure
Modeling Repulsive Gravity with Creation
There is a growing interest in the cosmologists for theories with negative
energy scalar fields and creation, in order to model a repulsive gravity. The
classical steady state cosmology proposed by Bondi, Gold and Hoyle in 1948, was
the first such theory which used a negative kinetic energy creation field to
invoke creation of matter. We emphasize that creation plays very crucial role
in cosmology and provides a natural explanation to the various explosive
phenomena occurring in local (z<0.1) and extra galactic universe. We exemplify
this point of view by considering the resurrected version of this theory - the
quasi-steady state theory, which tries to relate creation events directly to
the large scale dynamics of the universe and supplies more natural explanations
of the observed phenomena. Although the theory predicts a decelerating universe
at the present era, it explains successfully the recent SNe Ia observations
(which require an accelerating universe in the standard cosmology), as we show
in this paper by performing a Bayesian analysis of the data.Comment: The paper uses an old SNeIa dataset. With the new improved data, for
example the updated gold sample (Riess et al, astro-ph/0611572), the fit
improves considerably (\chi^2/DoF=197/180 and a probability of
goodness-of-fit=18%
Exact dynamic properties of molecular motors
Molecular motors play important roles within a biological cell, performing functions such as intracellular transport and gene transcription. Recent experimental work suggests that there are many plausible biochemical mechanisms that molecules such as myosin-V could use to achieve motion. To account for the abundance of possible discrete-stochastic frameworks that can arise when modeling molecular motor walks, a generalized and straightforward graphical method for calculating their dynamic properties is presented. It allows the calculation of the velocity, dispersion, and randomness ratio for any proposed system through analysis of its structure. This article extends work of King and Altman ["A schematic method of deriving the rate laws of enzyme-catalyzed reactions," J. Phys. Chem. 60, 1375-1378 (1956)] on networks of enzymatic reactions by calculating additional dynamic properties for spatially hopping systems. Results for n-state systems are presented: single chain, parallel pathway, divided pathway, and divided pathway with a chain. A novel technique for combining multiple system architectures coupled at a reference state is also demonstrated. Four-state examples illustrate the effectiveness and simplicity of these methods
Bondi Accretion in the Presence of Vorticity
The classical Bondi-Hoyle formula gives the accretion rate onto a point
particle of a gas with a uniform density and velocity. However, the Bondi-Hoyle
problem considers only gas with no net vorticity, while in a real astrophysical
situation accreting gas invariably has at least a small amount of vorticity. We
therefore consider the related case of accretion of gas with constant
vorticity, for the cases of both small and large vorticity. We confirm the
findings of earlier two dimensional simulations that even a small amount of
vorticity can substantially change both the accretion rate and the morphology
of the gas flow lines. We show that in three dimensions the resulting flow
field is non-axisymmetric and time dependent. The reduction in accretion rate
is due to an accumulation of circulation near the accreting particle. Using a
combination of simulations and analytic treatment, we provide an approximate
formula for the accretion rate of gas onto a point particle as a function of
the vorticity of the surrounding gas.Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Come to Daddy? Claiming Chris Cunningham for British Art Cinema
Twenty years after he came to prominence via a series of provocative, ground-breaking music videos, Chris Cunningham remains a troubling, elusive figure within British visual culture. His output – which includes short films, advertisements, art gallery commissions, installations, music production and a touring multi-screen live performance – is relatively slim, and his seemingly slow work rate (and tendency to leave projects uncompleted or unreleased) has been a frustration for fans and commentators, particularly those who hoped he would channel his interests and talents into a full-length ‘feature’ film project. There has been a diverse critical response to his musical sensitivity, his associations with UK electronica culture – and the Warp label in particular – his working relationship with Aphex Twin, his importance within the history of the pop video and his deployment of transgressive, suggestive imagery involving mutated, traumatised or robotic bodies. However, this article makes a claim for placing Cunningham within discourses of British art cinema. It proposes that the many contradictions that define and animate Cunningham's work – narrative versus abstraction, political engagement versus surrealism, sincerity versus provocation, commerce versus experimentation, art versus craft, a ‘British’ sensibility versus a transnational one – are also those that typify a particular terrain of British film culture that falls awkwardly between populism and experimentalism
Clustering in the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey
We present clustering results from the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) which
currently contains over 20,000 QSOs at z<3. The two-point correlation function
of QSOs averaged over the entire survey (~1.5) is found to be similar to
that of local galaxies. When sub-dividing the sample as a function of redshift,
we find that for an Einstein-de Sitter universe QSO clustering is constant (in
comoving coordinates) over the entire redshift range probed by the 2QZ, while
in a universe with Omega_0=0.3 and Lambda_0=0.7 there is a marginal increase in
clustering with redshift. Sub-dividing the 2QZ on the basis of apparent
magnitude we find only a slight difference between the clustering of QSOs of
different apparent brightness, with the brightest QSOs having marginally
stronger clustering. We have made a first measurement of the redshift space
distortion of QSO clustering, with the goal of determining the value of
cosmological parameters (in partcular Lambda_0) from geometric distortions. The
current data do not allow us to discriminate between models, however, in
combination with constraints from the evolution of mass clustering we find
Omega_0=1-Lambda_0=0.23 +0.44-0.13 and beta(z~1.4)=0.39 +0.18-0.17. The full
2QZ data set will provide further cosmological constraints.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures. Contributed to the 'Where's the Matter'

A two-species continuum model for aeolian sand ripples
We formulate a continuum model for aeolian sand ripples consisting of two
species of grains: a lower layer of relatively immobile clusters, with an upper
layer of highly mobile grains moving on top. We predict analytically the ripple
wavelength, initial ripple growth rate and threshold saltation flux for ripple
formation. Numerical simulations show the evolution of realistic ripple
profiles from initial surface roughness via ripple growth and merger.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
