    Lattice dynamics of the cluster chain compounds M2Mo6Se6

    The lattice dynamics of members of the M2Mo6Se6 family of materials with guest ions M = K, Rb, Cs, In, and Tl has been studied using inelastic x-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature, as well as by ab-initio calculations. We find a good match between calculations and experiment, both for structure factors (Eigenvectors) and for the calculated phonon frequencies. The observed lattice dynamics for Tl2Mo6Se6 show no signs of anharmonicity or absence of avoided dispersion crossings, thus ruling out previously hypothesised rattling phonon modes. The reduced mode energies for In2Mo6Se6 are identified as only partially responsible for the lower superconducting transition temperature Tc in this material when compared to Tl2Mo6Se6

    Immunological selection for Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis antigens.

    Comparative ELISA and selective immunoblotting procedures were used in attempts to identify differential serological indicators of infection with the Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis complex, infection with the L. braziliensis species, and therapeutic cure of localized or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL or MCL). Although mean ELISA absorbance values were significantly higher for MCL sera than for LCL sera, absorbance could not be used as a reliable indicator of the clinical form of disease. Immunoblotting profiles were similar with sera from MCL and LCL. Pre-adsorption with heterologous trypanosomatid antigens indicated that recognition of antigens of about 56, 60, 66, 72, 88 and 110 kDa might be specific to the subgenus Viannia. In two-colour, sequential, dual ELISA-based immunoblotting, no antigens recognized only by sera from MCL patients were detected. After glucantime therapy, immunoblotting profiles with LCL sera were reduced both in intensity and in the range of antigens detected; a 104-kDa antigen was newly detected with post-treatment LCL sera. Overall, the results show the value of differential immunological detection strategies and support the close relationship between species of the subgenus Viannia but fail to indicate a prognostic antigen for MCL

    Intermediate Range Order in Metal-Ammonia Solutions: Pure and Na-Doped Ca-NH_{3}

    The local and intermediate range ordering in Ca–NH3 solutions in their metallic phase is determined through H/D isotopically differenced neutron diffraction in combination with empirical potential structure refinements. For both low and high relative Ca concentrations, the Ca ions are found to be octahedrally coordinated by the NH3 solvent, and these hexammine units are spatially correlated out to lengthscales of ∼7.4–10.3 Å depending on the concentration, leading to pronounced ordering in the bulk liquid. We further demonstrate that this liquid order can be progressively disrupted by the substitution of Ca for Na, whereby a distortion of the average ion primary solvation occurs and the intermediate range ion–ion correlations are disrupted

    Challenges and opportunities of the COVID-19 pandemic for perinatal mental health care: a mixed-methods study of mental health care staff

    The aim of this study was to explore staff perceptions of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health service delivery and outcomes for women who were pregnant or in the first year after birth ('perinatal' women). Secondary analysis was undertaken of an online mixed-methods survey open to all mental health care staff in the UK involving 363 staff working with women in the perinatal period. Staff perceived the mental health of perinatal women to be particularly vulnerable to the impact of stressors associated with the pandemic such as social isolation (rated by 79.3% as relevant or extremely relevant; 288/363) and domestic violence and abuse (53.3%; 192/360). As a result of changes to mental health and other health and social care services, staff reported feeling less able to assess women, particularly their relationship with their baby (43.3%; 90/208), and to mobilise safeguarding procedures (29.4%; 62/211). While 42% of staff reported that some women engaged poorly with virtual appointments, they also found flexible remote consulting to be beneficial for some women and helped time management due to reductions in travel time. Delivery of perinatal care needs to be tailored to women's needs; virtual appointments are perceived not to be appropriate for assessments but may be helpful for some women in subsequent interactions. Safeguarding and other risk assessment procedures must remain robust in spite of modifications made to service delivery during pandemics

    Characterizing Batteries by In Situ Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy: A Critical Review

    Although lithium, and other alkali ion, batteries are widely utilized and studied, many of the chemical and mechanical processes that underpin the materials within, and drive their degradation/failure, are not fully understood. Hence, to enhance the understanding of these processes various ex situ, in situ and operando characterization methods are being explored. Recently, electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM), and related techniques, have emerged as crucial platforms for the versatile characterization of battery material surfaces. They have revealed insights into the morphological, mechanical, chemical, and physical properties of battery materials when they evolve under electrochemical control. This critical review will appraise the progress made in the understanding batteries using EC-AFM, covering both traditional and new electrode–electrolyte material junctions. This progress will be juxtaposed against the ability, or inability, of the system adopted to embody a truly representative battery environment. By contrasting key EC-AFM literature with conclusions drawn from alternative characterization tools, the unique power of EC-AFM to elucidate processes at battery interfaces is highlighted. Simultaneously opportunities for complementing EC-AFM data with a range of spectroscopic, microscopic, and diffraction techniques to overcome its limitations are described, thus facilitating improved battery performance

    Propagation of an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection in three dimensions

    Solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the most significant drivers of adverse space weather at Earth, but the physics governing their propagation through the heliosphere is not well understood. While stereoscopic imaging of CMEs with the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) has provided some insight into their three-dimensional (3D) propagation, the mechanisms governing their evolution remain unclear due to difficulties in reconstructing their true 3D structure. Here we use a new elliptical tie-pointing technique to reconstruct a full CME front in 3D, enabling us to quantify its deflected trajectory from high latitudes along the ecliptic, and measure its increasing angular width and propagation from 2-46 solar radii (approximately 0.2 AU). Beyond 7 solar radii, we show that its motion is determined by an aerodynamic drag in the solar wind and, using our reconstruction as input for a 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we determine an accurate arrival time at the Lagrangian L1 point near Earth.Comment: 5 figures, 2 supplementary movie

    Heat shock protein 10 inhibits lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory mediator production

    Heat shock protein 10 (Hsp10) and heat shock protein 160 (Hsp60) were originally described as essential mitochondrial proteins involved in protein folding. How,ever, both proteins have also been shown to have a number of extracellular immunomodulatory activities. Here we show that purified recombinant human Hsp10 incubated with cells in vitro reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nuclear factor-kappaB activation and secretion of several inflammatory mediators from RAW264.7 cells, murine macrophages, and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Induction of tolerance by contaminating LPS was formally excluded as being responsible for Hsp10 activity. Treatment of mice with Hsp10 before,endotoxin challenge resulted in the reduction of serum tumor necrosis factor-a and RANTES (regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted) levels and an elevation of serum interleukin-10 levels. Hsp10 treatment also delayed mortality in a murine graft-ver-sus-host disease model, where gut-derived LPS contributes to pathology. We were unable to confirm previous reports that Hsp10 has tumor growth factor properties and suggest that Hsp10 exerts anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting Toll-like receptor signaling possibly by interacting with extracellular Hsp60
