    Variation of Plesiomonas shigelloides putative virulence factors by sub-mic concentrations of quinolones

    Background There are reports on the alterations of some activities of different bacterial cells treated with sub-inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of diverse antimicrobials. Such concentrations of antibiotics do not kill bacteria and in vivo conditions during antibiotic therapy are present mainly between two intakes. Particularly, the role of antibiotics in modulation of bacterial virulence through alteration of several genes expression or post-translation modifications has recently become the focus of research. Objectives The present study describes the in vitro effect of quinolones on some putative virulence factors in P. shigelloides. Methods Bacterial strains were testing for a number of antibiotics, cell surface hydrophobicity, motility, lipolytic activity, sensitivity to oxidative stress and presence of short-chained acyl-homoserine lactones – AHLs (C4-C8) Results The results are summarised in Table 1 and Table 2 (See Poster). Conclusion The tested quinolones affected some putative virulence properties of P. shigelloides after treatment with sub-MIC concentrations
