Spin-current absorption by inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the spin-current absorption induced by an inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling due to impurities in metals. We consider the system with spin currents driven by the electric field or the spin accumulation. The resulting diffusive spin currents, including the gradient of the spin-orbit coupling strength, indicate the spin-current absorption at the interface, which is exemplified with experimentally relevant setups.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

Spin relaxation torque in metallic ferromagnets

Spin relaxation torque T{\cal T} in uniform metallic ferromagnets with the spin-orbit interaction arising from random impurities is calculated microscopically. T{\cal T} is shown to be written by spatial derivatives of the electric field, but is not always given as a divergence of a torque dipole density. The result is due to the fast dissipation of the orbital angular momentum, and thus a conserving spin current cannot be defined. It is discussed that the β\beta term in the spin transfer torque can also be asymmetric

Diffusive versus local spin currents in dynamic spin pumping systems

Using microscopic theory, we investigate the properties of a spin current driven by magnetization dynamics. In the limit of smooth magnetization texture, the dominant spin current induced by the spin pumping effect is shown to be the diffusive spin current, i.e., the one arising from only a diffusion associated with spin accumulation. That is to say, there is no effective field that locally drives the spin current. We also investigate the conversion mechanism of the pumped spin current into a charge current by spin-orbit interactions, specifically the inverse spin Hall effect. We show that the spin-charge conversion does not always occur and that it depends strongly on the type of spin-orbit interaction. In a Rashba spin-orbit system, the local part of the charge current is proportional to the spin relaxation torque, and the local spin current, which does not arise from the spin accumulation, does not play any role in the conversion. In contrast, the diffusive spin current contributes to the diffusive charge current. Alternatively, for spin-orbit interactions arising from random impurities, the local charge current is proportional to the local spin current that constitutes only a small fraction of the total spin current. Clearly, the dominant spin current (diffusive spin current) is not converted into a charge current. Therefore, the nature of the spin current is fundamentally different depending on its origin and thus the spin transport and the spin-charge conversion behavior need to be discussed together along with spin current generation

Seiberg-Witten prepotential for E-string theory and random partitions

We find a Nekrasov-type expression for the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for the six-dimensional non-critical E_8 string theory toroidally compactified down to four dimensions. The prepotential represents the BPS partition function of the E_8 strings wound around one of the circles of the toroidal compactification with general winding numbers and momenta. We show that our expression exhibits expected modular properties. In particular, we prove that it obeys the modular anomaly equation known to be satisfied by the prepotential.Comment: 14 page

[Introduction]B cell-activating factor of the tumor necrosis factor family (BAFF) and a proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) play a crucial role in B cell development, survival, and antibody production. Here we analyzed the serum levels of BAFF and APRIL and their respective clinical associations in patients with an immunoglobulin (Ig) G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). [Methods]We measured serum levels of BAFF and APRIL in patients with IgG4-RD, primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), and healthy individuals. Serum BAFF and APRIL levels in IgG4-RD were assessed for correlations with serological parameters, including Ig, particularly IgG4, and the number of affected organs. Serum BAFF and APRIL levels in IgG4-RD were monitored during glucocorticoid (GC) therapy. [Results]Serum BAFF and APRIL levels in patients with IgG4-RD were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than in healthy individuals. The BAFF levels of patients with IgG4-RD were comparable to those of patients with pSS. Although clinical parameters, such as serum IgG4 and the number of affected organs, were not correlated with the levels of BAFF, serum APRIL levels were inversely correlated with serum IgG4 levels (r = -0.626, P < 0.05). While serum BAFF levels decreased following GC therapy, serum APRIL levels increased during follow-up. [Conclusion]These results indicate that BAFF and APRIL might be useful markers for predicting disease activity in IgG4-RD. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of BAFF and APRIL in the pathogenesis of IgG4-RD

Seiberg-Witten prepotential for E-string theory and global symmetries

We obtain Nekrasov-type expressions for the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for the six-dimensional (1,0) supersymmetric E-string theory compactified on T^2 with nontrivial Wilson lines. We consider compactification with four general Wilson line parameters, which partially break the E_8 global symmetry. In particular, we investigate in detail the cases where the Lie algebra of the unbroken global symmetry is E_n + A_{8-n} with n=8,7,6,5 or D_8. All our Nekrasov-type expressions can be viewed as special cases of the elliptic analogue of the Nekrasov partition function for the SU(N) gauge theory with N_f=2N flavors. We also present a new expression for the Seiberg-Witten curve for the E-string theory with four Wilson line parameters, clarifying the connection between the E-string theory and the SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory with N_f=4 flavors.Comment: 22 pages. v2: comments and a reference added, version to appear in JHE
