Polyhalogenated heterocyclic compounds Part 45. Reactions of perfluoro-(4-isopropylpyridine) with oxygen, nitrogen and carbon nucleophiles

Reactions between perfluoro-(4-isopropylpyridine) (1) and a variety of oxygen-, nitrogen- and carbon-centred nucleophiles are reported. A range of mono-, di- and tri-substituted perfluoro-(4-isopropylpyridine) derivatives were synthesised for which yields and regiochemistry depended on reaction conditions. The barriers to rotation for the perfluoro- isopropyl group in several pyridine systems were measured by F- 19 NMR spin-saturation transfer experiments. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Polyhalogenated heterocyclic compounds. Macrocycles from perfluoro-4-isopropylpyridine

Perfluoro-4-isopropylpyridine was used as a building block for the two-step synthesis of a variety of macrocyclic systems bearing pyridine sub-units which were characterised by X-ray crystallography. Electrospray mass spectrometry revealed that complexation of either cations and, unusually, anions is possible depending on the structure of the macrocycle
