    Extreme Candidates as the Beneficent Spoiler? Range Effect in the Plurality Voting System

    How does the entrance of radical candidates influence election results? Conventional wisdom suggests that extreme candidates merely split the votes. Based on the range effect theory in cognitive psychology, we hypothesize that the entrance of an extreme candidate reframes the endpoints of the ideological spectrum among available candidates, which makes the moderate one on the same side to be perceived by the voters as even more moderate. Through two survey experiments in the United States and Taiwan, we provide empirical support for range effect in the vote choice in the plurality system. The results imply that a mainstream party can, even without changing its own manifesto, benefit from the entrance of its radical counterpart; it explains why the mainstream party may choose cooperation strategically. Our findings also challenge the assumption in regression models that the perceived ideological positions of candidates are independent of each other

    Flash-Point prediction for binary partially miscible aqueous-organic mixtures

    Flash point is the most important variable used to characterize fire and explosion hazard of liquids. Herein, partially miscible mixtures are presented within the context of liquid-liquid extraction processes and heterogeneous distillation processes. This paper describes development of a model for predicting the flash point of binary partially miscible mixtures of aqueous-organic system. To confirm the predictive efficiency of the derived flash points, the model was verified by comparing the predicted values with the experimental data for the studied mixtures: water + 1-butanol; water + 2-butanol; water + isobutanol; water + 1-pentanol; and, water + octane. Results reveal that immiscibility in the two liquid phases should not be ignored in the prediction of flash point. Overall, the predictive results of this proposed model describe the experimental data well when using the LLE and VLE parameters to estimate sequentially the span of two liquid phases and the flash point, respectively. Potential application for the model concerns the assessment of fire and explosion hazards, and the development of inherently safer designs for chemical processes containing binary partially miscible mixtures of aqueous-organic system

    E-Procurement System Adoption under Supply Chain Migration: A Case Study of Taiwanese Notebook Company

    This study examines the post adoption of technology and explores why technology may not be sustainable in organizations after its deployment. In contrast with previous studies, which emphasize technology improvement, users’ post-adoptive behavior, and organization adaptation, this research offers a practice-based analysis and suggests that architectural innovations may bring about a fundamental transition in organizational practices and collaboration patterns. This transformation in organizational principles renders technology obsolescence, and precludes a superficial change in technological features. This case study analyzes an e-procurement system deployed from Taiwan to China and investigates why the initial success of technology use was not transferred to the later application. The technology use within supply chain migration provides a useful context to understand problems of technology sustainability. Important implications are provided to enhance the theoretical development of post technology adoption. Practical insights are discussed with regard to supply chain changes

    Universal Filter Using Single Commercially Available IC: LT1228

    In electrical and electronic engineering, the filter is very importance circuit. A voltage-mode three inputs single output second-order multifunction filter is presented in this paper. The proposed filter is based on RLC parallel circuit. The main active element is the commercially available IC from Linear Technology Inc, LT1228. The filter consists of single LT1228, single resistor and two capacitors. Five output second-order filter responses, namely band-pass (BP), band-stop (BS), high-pass (HP), low-pass (LP) and all-pass (AP) functions are achieved. Each output response can be selected without component matching condition and the requirement of double gain amplifier. The quality factor and natural frequency can be electronically controlled. PSpice simulation results suing macro model of LT1228 are in close agreement with the theory
