Thermophotovoltaic space power system, phase 3
Work performed on a research and development program to establish the feasibility of a solar thermophotovoltaic space power generation concept was summarized. The program was multiphased. The earlier work is summarized and the work on the current phase is detailed as it pertains to and extends the earlier work. Much of the experimental hardware and materials development was performed on the internal program. Experimental measurements and data evaluation were performed on the contracted effort. The objectives of the most recent phase were: to examine the thermal control design in order to optimize it for lightweight and low cost; to examine the concentrator optics in an attempt to relieve pointing accuracy requirements to + or - 2 degrees about the optical axis; and to use the results of the thermal and optical studies to synthesize a solar thermophotovoltaic (STPV) module design that is optimized for space application
Hermetic encapsulation technique for solar arrays
A concept is presented for encapsulating solar cells between two layers of glass either individually, in panels, or in a continuous process. The concept yields an integral unit that is hermetically sealed and that is tolerant to high temperature thermal cycling and to particulate radiation. Data are presented on both high temperature solar cells and special glasses that soften at low temperatures for use with the concept. The results of encapsulating experiments are presented which show the successful application of the concept to the special high temperature cells. The mechanical feasibility of encapsulating 2 mil cells between two layers of 2 mil glass is also demonstrated
Research study on high energy radiation effect and environment solar cell degradation methods
The most detailed and comprehensively verified analytical model was used to evaluate the effects of simplifying assumptions on the accuracy of predictions made by the external damage coefficient method. It was found that the most serious discrepancies were present in heavily damaged cells, particularly proton damaged cells, in which a gradient in damage across the cell existed. In general, it was found that the current damage coefficient method tends to underestimate damage at high fluences. An exception to this rule was thick cover-slipped cells experiencing heavy degradation due to omnidirectional electrons. In such cases, the damage coefficient method overestimates the damage. Comparisons of degradation predictions made by the two methods and measured flight data confirmed the above findings
Plastic (wire-combed) grooving of a slip-formed concrete runway overlay at Patrick Henry Airport: An initial evaluation
A wire-comb technique is described for transversely grooving the surface of a freshly laid (plastic state) slip-formed concrete overlay installed at Patrick Henry Airport. This method of surface texturing yields better water drainage and pavement skid resistance than that obtained with an older conventional burlap drag concrete surface treatment installed on an adjacent portion of the runway

Glucocorticoid therapy for adrenal insufficiency: nonadherence, concerns and dissatisfaction with information
Objective: Appropriate selfâmanagement of glucocorticoid therapy (GC) is crucial for patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI). We aimed to describe patientsâ selfâreported nonadherence to GC, evaluate perceived doubts about need for GC, concerns about adverse effects, and dissatisfaction with information received about GC.
Design: Crossâsectional survey.
Patients: Patients prescribed GC for AI (n = 81) from five European countries.
Measurements: Online survey including the Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS), Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire© (BMQ Specific, adapted for AI) and Satisfaction with Information about Medicines Scale© (Prof Rob Horne; SIMS).
Results: Most patients (85·2%) reported a degree of nonadherence to GC. The most frequent types of nonadherence concerned changing the timing of GC doses, for example taking a dose later in the day than advised (37·0%). Few patients doubted their personal need for daily GC, but most reported high concerns about GC including potential weight gain (50·6%), osteoporosis (53·6%) and the continuing risk of adrenal crisis (50·6%). Dissatisfaction with information about GC was frequent, with participants particularly dissatisfied with the amount of information they had received about potential problems with GC. People who expressed dissatisfaction with information about GC, and concerns about its adverse effects were also more likely to report nonadherence (P < 0·05).
Conclusions: Nonadherence to treatment, concerns about potential adverse effects and dissatisfaction with the information provided about treatment were frequently reported by this European sample of AI patients. Many AI patients may need additional information about their GC and support to address concerns about GC and facilitate adherence
Initial Assessment of Acoustic Source Visibility with a 24-Element Microphone Array in the Arnold Engineering Development Center 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center
Measurements of background noise were recently obtained with a 24-element phased microphone array in the test section of the Arnold Engineering Development Center 80- by120-Foot Wind Tunnel at speeds of 50 to 100 knots (27.5 to 51.4 m/s). The array was mounted in an aerodynamic fairing positioned with array center 1.2m from the floor and 16 m from the tunnel centerline, The array plate was mounted flush with the fairing surface as well as recessed in. (1.27 cm) behind a porous Kevlar screen. Wind-off speaker measurements were also acquired every 15 on a 10 m semicircular arc to assess directional resolution of the array with various processing algorithms, and to estimate minimum detectable source strengths for future wind tunnel aeroacoustic studies. The dominant background noise of the facility is from the six drive fans downstream of the test section and first set of turning vanes. Directional array response and processing methods such as background-noise cross-spectral-matrix subtraction suggest that sources 10-15 dB weaker than the background can be detected
Radioisotope thermal photovoltaic application of the GaSb solar cell
An examination of a RTVP (radioisotopic thermophotovoltaic) conceptual design has shown a high potential for power densities well above those achievable with radioisotopic thermoelectric generator (RTG) systems. An efficiency of 14.4 percent and system specific power of 9.25 watts/kg were predicted for a system with sixteen GPHS (general purpose heat source) sources operating at 1100 C. The models also showed a 500 watt system power by the strontium-90 isotope at 1200 C at an efficiency of 17.0 percent and a system specific power of 11.8 watts/kg. The key to this level of performance is a high-quality photovoltaic cell with narrow bandgap and a reflective rear contact. Recent work at Boeing on GaSb cells and transparent back GaAs cells indicate that such a cell is well within reach
Passive wireless tags for tongue controlled assistive technology interfaces
Tongue control with low profile, passive mouth tags is demonstrated as a humanâdevice interface by communicating values of tongue-tag
separation over a wireless link. Confusion matrices are provided to demonstrate user accuracy in targeting by tongue position. Accuracy is
found to increase dramatically after short training sequences with errors falling close to 1% in magnitude with zero missed targets. The
rate at which users are able to learn accurate targeting with high accuracy indicates that this is an intuitive device to operate. The
significance of the work is that innovative very unobtrusive, wireless tags can be used to provide intuitive humanâcomputer interfaces
based on low cost and disposable mouth mounted technology. With the development of an appropriate reading system, control of assistive
devices such as computer mice or wheelchairs could be possible for tetraplegics and others who retain fine motor control capability of
their tongues. The tags contain no battery and are intended to fit directly on the hard palate, detecting tongue position in the mouth with
no need for tongue piercings
