Multipole Expansion of the Fields in Superconducting High-Velocity Spoke Cavities

    Get PDF
Multi-spokes superconducting cavities in the high-beta regime are being considered for a number of applications. In order to accurately model the dynamics of the particles in such cavities, knowledge of the fields off-axis are needed. We present a study of the multipoles expansion of the fields from an EM simulation field data for two-spokes cavities operating at 325 MHz, β = 0.82, and 500 MHz, β = 1

Design of Low-Frequency Superconducting Spoke Cavities for High-Velocity Applications

    Get PDF
Superconducting single- and multi-spoke cavities have been designed to-date for particle velocities from β~0.15 to β~0.65. Superconducting spoke cavities may also be of interest for higher-velocity, low-frequency applications, either for hadrons or electrons. We present the design of 325 and 352 MHz spoke cavities optimized for β=0.8 and β=1

Development of Spoke Cavities for High Velocity Applications

In response to recent interest in alternatives to TM-type cavities for low-frequency, high-velocity applications we have initiated a program for the development of multispoke superconducting cavities. We have completed the electromagnetic design for two-spoke cavities operating at 325, 352, 500, and 700 MHz with a design velocity of β0 = 0.82 or β0 = 1. We present the results of the optimization, higher order mode (HOM) analysis, multipacting analysis, and an initial analysis of multipole effects of the fundamental accelerating mode

    Engineering model 8-cm thruster subsystem

    Get PDF
An Engineering Model (EM) 8 cm Ion Thruster Propulsion Subsystem was developed for operation at a thrust level 5 mN (1.1 mlb) at a specific impulse 1 sub sp = 2667 sec with a total system input power P sub in = 165 W. The system dry mass is 15 kg with a mercury-propellant-reservoir capacity of 8.75 kg permitting uninterrupted operation for about 12,500 hr. The subsystem can be started from a dormant condition in a time less than or equal to 15 min. The thruster has a design lifetime of 20,000 hr with 10,000 startup cycles. A gimbal unit is included to provide a thrust vector deflection capability of + or - 10 degrees in any direction from the zero position. The EM subsystem development program included thruster optimization, power-supply circuit optimization and flight packaging, subsystem integration, and subsystem acceptance testing including a cyclic test of the total propulsion package

Participant recruitment to FiCTION, a primary dental care trial – survey of facilitators and barriers

    Get PDF
Objective To identify reasons behind a lower than expected participant recruitment rate within the FiCTION trial, a multi-centre paediatric primary dental care randomised controlled trial (RCT). Subjects (materials) and methods An online survey, based on a previously published tool, consisting of both quantitative and qualitative responses, completed by staff in dental practices recruiting to FiCTION. Ratings from quantitative responses were aggregated to give overall scores for factors related to participant recruitment. Qualitative responses were independently grouped into themes. Results Thirty-nine anonymous responses were received. Main facilitators related to the support received from the central research team and importance of the research question. The main barriers related to low child eligibility rates and the integration of trial processes within routine workloads. Conclusions These findings have directed strategies for enhancing participant recruitment at existing practices and informed recruitment of further practices. The results help provide a profile of the features required of practices to successfully screen and recruit participants. Future trials in this setting should consider the level of interest in the research question within practices, and ensure trial processes are as streamlined as possible. Research teams should actively support practices with participant recruitment and maintain enthusiasm among the entire practice team

Neuromuscular training improves lower extremity biomechanics associated with knee injury during landing in 11-13 year old female netball athletes: A randomized control study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a neuromuscular training (NMT) program on lower-extremity biomechanics in youth female netball athletes. The hypothesis was that significant improvements would be found in landing biomechanics of the lower-extremities, commonly associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, following NMT. Twenty-three athletes (age = 12.2 ± 0.9 years; height = 1.63 ± 0.08 m; mass = 51.8 ± 8.5 kg) completed two testing sessions separated by 7-weeks and were randomly assigned to either a experimental or control group. Thirteen athletes underwent 6-weeks of NMT, while the remaining 10 served as controls and continued their regular netball training. Three-dimensional lower-extremity kinematics and vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) were measured during two landing tasks, a drop vertical jump and a double leg broad jump with a single leg landing. The experimental group significantly increased bilateral knee marker distance during the bilateral landing task at maximum knee-flexion range of motion. Knee internal rotation angle during the unilateral landing task at maximum knee flexion-extension range of motion was significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.05, g \u3e 1.00). The experimental group showed large, significant decreases in peak vertical ground reaction force in both landing tasks (p ≤ 0.05, g \u3e −1.30). Control participants did not demonstrate any significant pre-to-post-test changes in response to the 6-week study period. Results of the study affirm the hypothesis that a 6-week NMT program can enhance landing biomechanics associated with ACL injury in 11–13 year old female netball athletes

Risk factors for breast cancer in young women by oestrogen receptor and progesterone receptor status

    Get PDF
We used data from 765 cases and 564 controls in the population-based Australian Breast Cancer Family Study to investigate whether, in women under the age of 40, the profile of risk factors differed between breast cancer subtypes defined by joint oestrogen and progesterone receptor status. As hypothesised, no significant differences were found
