    Design-time performance testing

    Software designers make decisions between alternate approaches early in the development of a software application and these decisions can be difficult to change later. Designers make these decisions based on estimates of how alternatives affect software qualities. One software quality that can be difficult to predict is performance, that is, the efficient use of resources in the system. It is particularly challenging to estimate the performance of large, interconnected software systems composed of components. With the proliferation of class libraries, middle-ware systems, web services, and third party components, many software projects rely on third party services to meet their requirements. Often choosing between services involves considering both the functionality and performance of the services. To help software developers compare their designs and third-party services, I propose using performance prototypes of alternatives and test suites to estimate performance trade-offs early in the development cycle, a process called Design-Time Performance Testing (DTPT). Providing software designers with performance evidence based on prototypes will allow designers to make informed decisions regarding performance trade-offs. To show how DTPT can help inform real design decisions. In particular: a process for DTPT, a framework implementation written in Java, and experiments to verify and validate the process and implementation. The implemented framework assists when designing, running, and documenting performance test suites, allowing designers to make accurate comparisons between alternate approaches. Performance metrics are captured by instrumenting and running prototypes.     Nonlinear Quantum Dynamics

    The vast majority of the literature dealing with quantum dynamics is concerned with linear evolution of the wave function or the density matrix. A complete dynamical description requires a full understanding of the evolution of measured quantum systems, necessary to explain actual experimental results. The dynamics of such systems is intrinsically nonlinear even at the level of distribution functions, both classically as well as quantum mechanically. Aside from being physically more complete, this treatment reveals the existence of dynamical regimes, such as chaos, that have no counterpart in the linear case.     Agri-environmental diversification: Linking environmental, forestry and renewable energy engagement on Scottish farms

    AbstractIn this paper we broaden the debate on agri-environmental scheme participation to include farm woodland expansion and renewable energy production, developing a conceptualisation of ‘agri-environmental diversification’. Utilising structural equation modelling, we assess a telephone survey of 2416 Scottish farmers, undertaken in 2013. Findings demonstrate the path dependencies of farming participants, with those already engaged in each of these activities the most likely to plan to be involved in future. Similar factors have influenced the uptake of all three activities since 2005, and intention to increase involvement by 2020. Farmers who are: younger, better educated, information-seeking, certified as organic, receive subsidies, have non-farming income and plan to continue farming in the medium term, are more likely to plan for future engagement in the three activities. Environmental attitudes are also important, but a stronger relationship was found between observation of environmental gains from agri-environmental schemes and the three forms of agri-environmental diversification, suggesting that scheme involvement enables farmers to learn to produce, recognise and value environmental goods. We argue that when assessed within the broader perspective of agri-environmental diversification, agri-environmental scheme participation may represent an initial step on a farming trajectory that involves multiple forms of agri-environmental engagement

    Feedback cooling of a nanomechanical resonator

    Cooled, low-loss nanomechanical resonators offer the prospect of directly observing the quantum dynamics of mesoscopic systems. However, the present state of the art requires cooling down to the milliKelvin regime in order to observe quantum effects. Here we present an active feedback strategy based on continuous observation of the resonator position for the purpose of obtaining these low temperatures. In addition, we apply this to an experimentally realizable configuration, where the position monitoring is carried out by a single-electron transistor. Our estimates indicate that with current technology this technique is likely to bring the required low temperatures within reach.Comment: 10 pages, RevTex4, 4 color eps figure

    A novel cardioport for beating-heart, image-guided intracardiac surgery

    Objective Intracardiac beating-heart procedures require the introduction and exchange of complex instruments and devices. To prevent potential complications such as air embolism and bleeding, a universal cardioport was designed and tested. Methods The design consists of a port body and a series of interchangeable sleeves. The port uses a fluid purging system to remove air from the instrument before insertion into the heart, and a valve system minimizes blood loss during instrument changes. Results The cardioport was tested ex vivo and in vivo in pigs (n = 5). Beating-heart procedures, such as septal defect closure and mitral valve repair, were modeled. Ex vivo trials (n = 150) were performed, and no air emboli were introduced using the port. In comparison, air emboli were detected in 40% to 85% of the cases without the use of the port-based purging system. Port operation revealed excellent ergonomics and minimal blood loss. Conclusions A novel cardioport system designed to prevent air entry and blood loss from transcardiac instrument introduction was shown to be an enabling platform for intracardiac beating-heart surgery.     Cooling a nanomechanical resonator using feedback: toward quantum behavior

    Nano-electro-mechanical devices are now rapidly approaching the point where it will be possible to observe quantum mechanical behavior. However, for such behavior to be visible it is necessary to reduce the thermal motion of these devices down to temperatures in the millikelvin range. Here we consider the use of feedback control for this purpose. We analyze an experimentally realizable situation in which the position of the resonator is continuously monitored by a Single-Electron Transistor. Because the resonator is harmonic, it is possible to use a classical description of the measurement process, and we discuss both the quantum and classical descriptions. Because of this the optimal feedback algorithm can be calculated using classical control theory. We examine the quantum state of the controlled oscillator, and the achievable effective temperature. Our estimates indicate that with current experimental technology, feedback cooling is likely to bring the required milliKelvin temperatures within reach

    Clinicopathologic features of ovarian mixed mesodermal tumors and carcinosarcomas

    Over a 27-year period there were 15 patients treated at the University of Michigan Medical center for carcinosarcomas or mixed mesodermal tumors of the ovary. Overall median survival was 11 months. Median survival was 4 months in patients with carcinosarcomas and 13 months in patients with mixed mesodermal tumors (P = 0.066). Patients with a chondrosarcomatous element had a significantly longer median survival than patients with mixed mesodermal tumors lacking cartilaginous differentiation (P = 0.031). The presence of a rhabdomyosarcomatous element did not affect survival. The size of the primary tumor, presence of ascites, FIGO stage, and degree of initial resection (optimal versus suboptimal) did not affect survival.     Towards clinical translation of 7 Tesla MRI in the human brain

    Clinical translation of 7 tesla (T) MRI of the brain promises high image quality and potentially improved clinical diagnosis for patients compared to current standard lower field-strength MRI at 1.5 and 3T. Here we describe how physics principles underlying ultra-high field (UHF) strength MRI affect 7T image quality, and how these can be exploited to translate 7T brain imaging into clinical practice. UHF MRI profits from higher inherent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a resultant increase in achievable spatial resolution or acceleration factors; increase in sensitivity to magnetic susceptibility differences and a higher amplitude of the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal; increase in longitudinal relaxation time; and increased frequency dispersion and spectral resolution in MR spectroscopy. Examples are presented of different brain pathologies, which are better illustrated on 7T compared to lower field strength by applying sequences and imaging techniques that exploit these intrinsic strengths of 7T MRI.
