Structural tailoring of counter rotation propfans
The STAT program was designed for the optimization of single rotation, tractor propfan designs. New propfan designs, however, generally consist of two counter rotating propfan rotors. STAT is constructed to contain two levels of analysis. An interior loop, consisting of accurate, efficient approximate analyses, is used to perform the primary propfan optimization. Once an optimum design has been obtained, a series of refined analyses are conducted. These analyses, while too computer time expensive for the optimization loop, are of sufficient accuracy to validate the optimized design. Should the design prove to be unacceptable, provisions are made for recalibration of the approximate analyses, for subsequent reoptimization
Assessing the variation in the load that produces maximal upper-body power
Substantial variation in the load that produces maximal power has been reported. It has been suggested that the variation observed may be due to differences in subject physical characteristics. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine the extent in which anthropometric measures correlate to the load that produces maximal power. Anthropometric measures (upper-arm length, forearm length, total arm length, upper-arm girth) and bench press strength were assessed in 26 professional rugby union players. Peak power was then determined in the bench press throw exercise using loads of 20 to 60% of one repetition maximum (1RM) in the bench press exercise. Maximal power occurred at 30 +/- 14 %1RM (mean +/- SD). Upper-arm length had the highest correlation with the load maximizing power: -0.61 (90% confidence limits -0.35 to -0.78), implying loads of 22 vs. 38 %1RM maximize power for players with typically long vs. short upper-arm length. Correlations for forearm length, total arm length and upper-arm girth to the load that maximized power were -0.29 (0.04 to -0.57), -0.56 (-0.28 to -0.75), and -0.29 (0.04 to -0.57), respectively. The relationship between 1RM and the load that produced maximal power was r = -0.23 (0.10 to -0.52). The between-subject variation in the load that maximised power observed (SD= +/- 14 %1RM) may have been due to differences in anthropometric characteristics, and absolute strength and power outputs. Indeed, athletes with longer limbs and larger girths, and greater maximal strength and power outputs utilised a lower percentage of 1RM loads to achieve maximum power. Therefore, we recommend individual assessment of the load that maximizes power output
INCOME, WEALTH, AND THE ECONOMIC WELL-BEING OF FARM HOUSEHOLDS
Agricultural policy is rooted in the 1930s notion that providing transfers of money to the farm sector translates into increased economic well-being of farm families. This report shows that changes in income for the farm sector or for any particular group of farm businesses do not necessarily reflect changes confronting farm households. Farm households draw income from various sources, including off-farm work, other businesses operated, and increasingly nonfarm investments. Likewise, focus on a single indicator of well-being, like income, overlooks other indicators such as the wealth held by the household and the level of consumption expenditures for health care, food, housing, and other items. Using an expanded definition of economic well-being, we show that farm households as a whole are relatively better off than the average U.S. household, but that about 6 percent remain economically disadvantaged relative to the rest of the population.Consumption, farm households, income, wealth, well-being, off-farm employment, Consumer/Household Economics,
Turbine Disk Retirement-for-Cause: Measurement of Inspection Uncertainty for Disk Eddy Current Inspections
Major cost savings are possible through life extension of high-cost jet engine components until damage develops. Retirement-for-cause (RFC) decisions will be based upon both non-destructive inspection (NDI) to detect and size defects, and engineering analysis to assess defect severity under future usage. Failure Analysis Associates is performing a three-year program for ARPA/AFML to define and verify an optimum RFC strategy for jet engine disks. In depth, quantitative characterization of NDI performance is a major part of this project. This presentation summarizes the quantitative evaluation of inspection (NDI) uncertainty for four independent inspections - two state-of-the-art eddy current inspections of disk bolt holes, one with conventional hardware but improved signal processing, and one higher resolution eddy current inspection system assembled for this project. Separate inspections of the same 490 bolt holes in 49, 3rd stage disks retired from service in TF33 engines were performed with each of the four NDI techniques. Inspection results were compared with each other and with the actual cracks measured by surface plastic replicas and selected destructive metallography. The variation of detection probability and sizing errors with flaw size and indication level is defined in a form suitable.for the probabilistic reliability analysis and RFC strategy formulation. Progress in the other project tasks, especially the stress and fracture mechanics analysis to define the conditional failure probability if a flaw of specified size were present will also be summarized
Chandra Observations of Galaxy Zoo Mergers: Frequency of Binary Active Nuclei in Massive Mergers
We present the results from a Chandra pilot study of 12 massive galaxy
mergers selected from Galaxy Zoo. The sample includes major mergers down to a
host galaxy mass of 10 that already have optical AGN
signatures in at least one of the progenitors. We find that the coincidences of
optically selected active nuclei with mildly obscured ( cm) X-ray nuclei are relatively common (8/12), but the
detections are too faint ( counts per nucleus; erg s cm) to reliably separate starburst and
nuclear activity as the origin of the X-ray emission. Only one merger is found
to have confirmed binary X-ray nuclei, though the X-ray emission from its
southern nucleus could be due solely to star formation. Thus, the occurrences
of binary AGN in these mergers are rare (0-8%), unless most merger-induced

Lift, Drag, and Pitching Moments of an Arrow Wing Having 80 Degree of Sweepback at Mach Numbers from 2.48 to 3.51 and Reynolds Numbers up to 11.0 Million
Measurements were made of the lift, drag, and pitching moments on an arrow wing (taper ratio of zero) having an aspect ratio of 1.4 and a leading-edge sweepback of 80 (degrees). The wing was designed to have a subsonic leading-edge and a Clark-Y airfoil with a thickness ratio of 12 percent of the chord perpendicular to the wing leading edge. The wing was tested both with and without the wing tips bent upward in an attempt to alleviate possible flow separation in the vicinity of the wing tips. Small jets of air were used to fix transition near the wing leading edge. Force results are presented for Mach numbers of 2.48, 2.75, 3.04, 3.28, and 3.51 at Reynolds numbers of 3.5 and 9.0 million and for a Mach number of 3.04 at a Reynolds number of 11.0 million. The measured aerodynamic characteristics are compared with those estimated by linear theory. The maximum lift-drag ratio measured was much less than that predicted. This difference is attributed to lack of full leading-edge thrust and to the experimental lift-curve slope being about 20 percent below the theoretical value
Effects of two contrast training programs on jump performance in rugby union players during a competition phase
Purpose: There is little literature comparing contrast training programs typically performed by team-sport athletes within a competitive phase. We compared the effects of two contrast training programs on a range of measures in high-level rugby union players during the competition season. Methods: The programs consisted of a higher volume-load (strength-power) or lower volume-load (speed-power) resistance training; each included a tapering of loading (higher force early in the week, higher velocity later in the week) and was performed twice a week for 4 wk. Eighteen players were assessed for peak power during a bodyweight countermovement jump (BWCMJ), bodyweight squat jump (BWSJ), 50 kg countermovement jump (50CMJ), 50 kg squat jump (50SJ), broad jump (BJ), and reactive strength index (RSI; jump height divided by contact time during a depth jump). Players were then randomized to either training group and were reassessed following the intervention. Inferences were based on uncertainty in outcomes relative to thresholds for standardized changes. Results: There were small between-group differences in favor of strength-power training for mean changes in the 50CMJ (8%; 90% confidence limits, ±8%), 50SJ (8%; ±10%), and BJ (2%; ±3%). Differences between groups for BWCMJ, BWSJ, and reactive strength index were unclear. For most measures there were smaller individual differences in changes with strength-power training. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that high-level rugby union athletes should be exposed to higher volume-load contrast training which includes one heavy lifting session each week for larger and more uniform adaptation to occur in explosive power throughout a competitive phase of the season
